His character helps the audience sense the stakes and the power of this reckless evil His is the face of the common men and women of middle earth...unassuming and humble people, who have barely the means or will to face this enemy. Yet they make their last stand, likely knowing that this may be the end for them...their last day on (middle) earth. This bowman is in many ways, the face of Rohan...a simple yet noble nation.

Something to note about his actual shot. From a castle keep, several hundred feet up, he managed to loose an arrow that covered several hundred yards and hit a well armoured Uruk-Hai with enough force to kill him, in precisely the place where his armour was weakest... all of this by accident.
