About The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King:
"One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." In the conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterpiece, #TheLordOfTheRings, as armies mass for a final battle that will decide the fate of the world--and powerful, ancient forces of Light and Dark compete to determine the outcome--one member of the Fellowship of the Ring is revealed as the noble heir to the throne of the Kings of Men. Yet, the sole hope for triumph over evil lies with a brave hobbit, Frodo, who, accompanied only by his loyal friend Sam and the hideous, wretched Gollum, ventures deep into the very dark heart of Mordor on his seemingly impossible quest to destroy the Ring of Power.

The first two movies didn't get anywhere near the respect they deserved by the Oscars. The Academy has always been snobbish about the fantasy genre (so said Christopher Lee and others who knew first hand), and I suppose they were waiting to see whether the third movie in the trilogy could maintain the brilliant quality (which it did).
@santinoalexanderskowronek6382

Actually: the academy was aware by the first movie what was happening and that LOTR is a monumental piece of movie history and will undoubtedly triumph in every category. So they decided to use the years for other smaller production and have a clean sweep for the third to honour the entire trilogy.

I always have considered the first to be the best. It is the grittiest of them all without the silly comedy that RoTK especially has. The whole trilogy is a masterpiece of art but The Fellowship of the Ring is just mindblowing and I got to see it in theaters. I was quite young back then but there is something about that movie that separates it from the rest. I think it is the slightly grittier tone and its smaller scale battle scenes that just somehow work better and are more interesting, more personal and intimate. There is no sadder death in whole trilogy than (SPOILER ALERT) Boromirs. Also the whole Moria part is just awe inspiring. But I could go on… it is perfect.

@@DavidArriola Still doesn't change the fact that the costumes looks lazy, cheap and unimaginative based on what we've seen from RoP so far. For example, the crown worn by Durin III is just a piece of metal with spikes. I want to remind you that the show is suposedly taking place during Moria's height of power and the dwarves would've already had vast experience in smithing even before the discovery of mithril. If they even dug deeper into the lore of Durin they could've designed a magnificent yet intricate crown that not only showed the mastercraftmanship of dwarves but also subtly linked to the "Crown of Durin". The heavenly crown that was made up of a star constellation that inspired Durin I to establish the kingdom of Moria in the first place. But no, the talented designers thought it better for Durin III to wear a crude ring of metal with spikes around his head. Very respectable.

I remember, I recently watched a Marvel movie for the first time (friends talked me into it). And I tried to explain afterwards that something was off, something felt fake, even in scenes where it's literally just people standing around in a hallway and talking. My friends explained to me that it's all cgi. Everything down to the clothes and the hair of the actors, because it's cheaper than paying actual costume designers to create those things. And that just... made me a little sad.
@limecilla7612

The most interesting thing is, LOTR trilogy actually had a lot of CGI. But the creative team used it sparingly, just to achieve what couldn't be achieved by physical effects. That gives these movies a realistic perception to the audience, because nearly everything you see on the screen *is* actually there: actors, costumes, props, locations... And that's why they have aged so well, specially if you compare them to the Star Wars prequels, that were shot nearly at the same time, and were some of the first movies to use CGI for everything.
@baguettegott3409
@baguettegott3409 2 жыл бұрын
@@limecilla7612 Exactly. And I mean, it's not like the cgi in lotr is perfect, there's moments where you can totally see that it's from the early 2000s. But it doesn't break the illusion, so to speak, because it's used so sparingly and in clever combination with other effects. (Also, I may be biased here, because I do like the Star Wars prequels, despite... everything. But I always found it funny to compare the Behind the Scenes stuff. You have the lotr dudes running all over New Zealand, on actual rivers and in real fields, and then there's Haydn Christensen just... falling over repeatedly. In front of different green screens.)

She inspired me to pursue costume design. Fellowship of the Ring was the first time I actually noticed costumes in a film and realized it was an art form. Her incredible attention to detail and her beautiful, well-thought out designs really brought those characters to life in a way I don't think many would have been able to do. Especially after watching Amazon's ROP, and looking at the catastrophe that are the costumes in that show. It really makes me appreciate Ngila and her incredible designs now more than ever before. Thank you Ngila for doing the LOTR justice.

I'm probably speaking for a lot of people, for a lot of fan of Tolkien's work, I would rather have seen Warner and New Line create a live-action series in their established style - that is as true to the lore as possible and, most importantly, respecting Tolkien and his work. You could easily have each season focusing on a specific part of the history before the Third Age. There are a lot of characters, some contained to a specific time, and elven characters living through the ages. If you had the rights, that is.

@@sandman8993 Honestly, I'm worried about a series since it would mean that they would just keep adding a lot of fan service to try to keep as many watchers for as long they can to earn money. Not really focusing on the story, This is more common when there is no strict source material.

@@jimmyjames1807 Luck is the furthest thing from it. Amazon is making a series set in the 2nd age ...without owning any rights to Tolkien's work set in the 2nd age. So, even from a strictly legal standpoint, they aren't allowed to use any of Tolkien's 2nd age characters, stories, events etc. in their show, it'll be entirely something of their own making that they are just calling "lord of the rings". And it's very clear just based on poromotional material that they missed the mark by miles.

Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy produced very nice looking costume and armor design, no wonder they won so many awards on oscars including in costume design category, I cannot say the same thing with Amazon RoP lol, even though they already spent like nearly half a billion dollars just for season 1 alone. Just take a look at the cheap looking manboob armor of the Numenoreans in Amazon RoP and compared that to Gondorian armor design from PJ trilogy, difference is just night and day. and PJ trilogy was made like 20 or so years ago.

And at 7:06 she says they used Indian fabrics, what's your point? Middle-earth is mostly a single land mass that connects all (or most) cultures. In Retun of the King everyone literally walks to the battlefield. Rohan is similar to Vikings. Near Harad is similar to Moorish, Arabic, etc. Far Harad, African. Rhûn/Easterlings, Asians. And so on.

@@lorddaquanofhouserastafari4177 First of all, the books and the Peter Jackson films are not synonymous. In the film the Haradrim were probably New Zealanders judging by their look, which wasn't done for lore purposes but because that's where the movies were filmed and those were the actors readily available. Secondly, Oliphants, which were at Pelennor fields, are clearly inspired by elephants, which come from Africa and Asia. Tolkien came up with the map. Go look at it. It's Middle-earth not Middle-europe. It's practically a pangea. Heck, Tolkien was born in Africa, sence you know, cultures travel.

The people working on it sure are great, but the vision behind it is to create enough money to repay that enormous investment and to put in their own agenda. Its sad that Weta and Shore etc. are wasting their effort in a project that doesn´t treat Tolkiens World with the same respect as the LotR movies...
