As one of the few people with an English, physical copy of Yo-kai Watch 3- This is genuinely one of the best game series EVER made. Any of the games coming to Switch in English would be the best moment of my life. I say this with 100% sincerity: Yo-Kai Watch 3 is my favorite game of all time.

Only a limited amount of copies were sent to europe and I was lucky enough to get my Hands on it. I believe Yokai watch 3 to be one of if not the best 3DS game available. So many hours of content packed into a single Cartridge. Its music is so good as well.

I genuinely had to put the game down because I was expecting Yo-Kai Watch 3 and got a game with beautiful 3ds visuals, in depth battle mechanics, an extremely lengthy campaign, essential the entire hub world of the first two games plus new ones, and such an extreme amount of side content I don't even know how they fit in. With so many discoveries in the game (I was literally crying the first time I went through a door and they sent me to some horrour movie type location instead of a regular challenge) it blows every new third party game out of the water...

There is interesting things to note, the Chinese localization that recently released has several "localization-isms," and LEVEL5 is clearly interested in audiences outside JP nowadays. Not to say anything is guaranteed, but I do believe supporting their recent releases could make them confident enough to try finishing the English localization, at the very least.

Thanks for making this video! It was serendipitously timed with my own purchase of Yo-Kai Watch 1 for switch and 4++! I was a little nervous about the prospect of modding my switch for the fan translation, but you made it look pretty easy.

As a big fan of the 3 mainline Yokai Watch games, there's two big reasons why the series dropped off as hard as it did: Advertising and Release Schedule. Yokai Watch's advertising wasn't really the best, a lot of the Japanese overeccentric humor doesn't really jell well with American demographics, so it probably floundered a bit in that department, but the games were overall pretty solid and the games built a cult following because of it. Now, the bigger issue was how they handled release schedules: Yokai watch 1 came out in North America on November 6th, 2015, according to wikipedia. Yokai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits came out September 30th, 2016, 329 days after the first game came out. Then, instead of releasing Yokai Watch 3, they instead released Yokai Watch 2: Psychic Specters on September 29th, 2017, 364 days after the base version of YW2 came out. 2017 was also a big year since that is the same year the Nintendo Switch released into the world, and that was going to spell the end of the 3DS since that fulfilled the mobile gaming niche as well as the home console niche. So, instead of releasing YW3 again, they decided to throw the spinoff game Blasters into the mix on September 7th, 2018, 343 days after psychic specters, and then on February 8th, 2019, 154 days after blasters, we finally got YW3. For comparison, when Yokai Watch 3 finally came stateside, the switch was just a month shy of 2 years on the market, the 3DS was just a faint memory of the past at that point, which was a shame since we got a lot of good titles at the end of the lifespan. The fact that Level-5 wasn't being aggressive enough with their release schedule was probably what killed it in the long run since they stuck with the yearly release schedule almost until the end where they realized they had to rush whatever they could out the door before Nintendo Axe'd the 3DS line in 2020. When these games were coming out, people were clamoring for more, the second game delivered just that, but then they took a year to effectively release a content patch that only had a 5-month turnaround time for the Japanese release. Blasters also probably shouldn't have came out in the states, as they probably should've just gunned down getting both Psychic Specters out in like 6 months, and then follow that up 6 months later with Yokai Watch 3, as that would've at least came out while the 3DS still had some relevancy. It's such a shame, too, I really loved the series playing it at the tail end of Middle School up until I graduated in High School.

@@MunchingOrange According to the titles of Yokai Watch 2, Ganso and Honke, Ganso means something similar to Ancestry while Honke means Head Family, which could indicate the past and modern themes they were trying to convey in the story of those games. Not entirely sure how Sushi and Tempura tied into YW3 other than just some general theming with the characters, other than that, nothing super concrete. I firmly believe that Blaster's could've been axed since YW3 had a fully functional blasters mode with online multiplayer already, and I just have no clue why it took them a full year to release what was effectively a patch for the second game. Oh yeah, fun fact: Yokai Watch 3 was effectively delayed in the States. Forgot to mention this, but Yokai Watch 3 was actually delayed, because a certain game for the switch was planed to come out the same exact day on December 7th, 2018. That game was Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Now, the most Bizarre thing happened in that they delayed the game, but that delay ONLY applied to North America, which didn't get affected at ALL for the European release of the game, they got the game Same-day as Smash across the pond. I was furious, because I really wanted to play it, I had pre-ordered the physical copy, and they just decided to drop it with a completed English script in foreign territories with no way to play it on a region-locked US 3DS. I remember getting my physical copy at the gamestop before going to school, they opened the box to a grand total of one copy, and nothing else was stocked ever again, it was kind of a magical experience to witness. I still have it to this day 5 years later. Another fun fact: There's actually another Yokai Watch Spinoff that never came stateside despite the push for Blasters, and it was a Koei Tecmo game that was a Yokai Watch-flavored retelling of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Yokai Sangokushi was a strategy game where you took over different parts of the Yokai Watch 1 world map and defended them from the other warring kingdoms. The story is supposed to be loosely based on the actual war of the three kingdoms in China. Curiously enough, according to the wiki, there was another sequel to Blasters that also never came stateside, so there's a bunch of lost games in the series we straight up just never got.

I think the anime's lackluster reception added to them not localizing the game, which is fair sibce while I liked Shadowside they REALLY lost what made thr yokais so good when they made them more "darker". Sadly this meant Nate never met Jibanyan and Co again in the future and we don't know what happened that led to him forgetting them

There was plans to localize it, but then L5 Abby had a little thing where they went bankrupt lol. It doesn't help that the game didn't do the best in Japan; the movie and anime did quite well. Which is likely why they decided to do an adaptation in the form of Yo-kai Watch 4.

10:29 There's also a Mark Orckerberg who took over Yopple after Steve Jaws was exposed because Steve didn't originally invent the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero, Nate's (full given name Nathan) grandfather Nathaniel Adams did. Hidabat actually founded the Yo-Kai version of Amazon from Nate's closet (his Japanese name is literally just Hikikōmori, an extreme shut-in) before he eventually sold it too because he was already the second richest Yo-Kai at the time after Steve Jaws and owned a whole bunch of other businesses across Springdale, some of which were human buisnesses.

Fun fact: this combat system is actually taken from the Yo-kai Watch Blasters series of games, which is both a series of sub-games in each mainline game, and its own spin-off series where you can play as the Yo-kai! The ability to play as Nate and the others was added in this game. Also, there is actually another Yo-kai Watch game on Switch that released afterwards in 2020, called Yo-kai Gakuen Y. It has a COMPLETELY different premise, but has a combat system that is similar and even better than this one! You should check it out! Happy Yo-kai Watching, and hope you enjoy!

and now yo-kai watch 2 is one of the most coveted games on the 3DS. Bit of a side tangent, I was completely uninterested in the game back when it released, but my family got it more me as a birthday gift. I. fell. in. love. This was also the game that taught me about Japanese yokai as a whole, and the influences they had in other media. I remember trying to figure out which Pokémon were actually based on the things, then I remembered mawile. Turns out, there was a side character in this movie I watched beforehand who also had a mouth in the back of her head. A quick google search later, and I found that both of those two share the same yokai inspiration. Thus, mawile has been my favorite Pokémon ever since.

Something you probably might not know about is that level 5 NA stated that all future releases, including Yokai watch will have an international release, this means that Yokai watch and the Professor Layton series, even newer titles like Deca-Police will be officially coming back to the west.

hi dude, thanks for the video you can actually dodge with A button, but it will cost stamina, hold B will enter running mode even during battle so remember using those to dodge holding R with enter yoki absorb for you to use yokai Mana skills, L+ A (i think) will be the pin for party AI to attack on the same enemy. looking forward for new vids cuz i'm in love with the franchise and glad there's big youtuber making a video

I forgot, Nintendo Treehouse gradually took over localization and they localized the third game entirely themselves. Level-5 Abbey going into maintenance mode had nothing to do with it. Besides, we are getting localizations of a couple of upcoming Level-5 games without Abbey anyway.

I remember in like 2018, in the little school shop, everyone was buying the yo-kai's. I was one of the few who had collected them all. I didnt have the watch, just the tokens. One day, i was forced to give my yokai's away to my cousin, since they started collecting them. And now, all of them are in the bin. My cousin burned my binder, and tokens. Because he couldn't get the watch. I wish i didnt give it away.

That gameplay is very Ni No Kuni which, funnily enough, was also developed by Level 5 as well as Studio Ghibli. It was one of my favourite game when I was younger so It's nice to see the gameplay style making a comeback since I wasn't the biggest fan of how they changed it for Ni No Kuni 2.

Yo-kai Watch 4++ was actually built off of Ni no Kuni 2, then the adaptation of the sequel series, Gakuen/Y School Heroes, was built off of 4++, and then now the newest Inazuma Eleven game is built off of Gakuen

Man the fact that we lost the switch port chance still kills me! I love this series so much still i had even figured out how to get into the japan google play store just to get some of the yokai watch games over there even though i cant read a lick of Japanese.

The third game is super cool too. I only played like a couple hours of it but I'm pretty sure that's where you see more of those powerful humanoid yokais that you saw in that first cutscene.

Hey, I play Final Fantasy XIV and there is a Yokai Watch event happening now in the game! You can get Yokai as well as Yokai Watch themed weapons for your character!

I remember this Collaboration, in Yokai Watch 3 you also could get Final Fantasy stuff like Mogry as a Yokai, or Jibanyan riding on a Chocobo.

I remember watching munchingorange play yo-kai watch yeaaaaars ago, then I got the game myself and i fell in love with it! I still have my old save file and even though I stopped following the franchise, I sometimes open my game and seeing all my old yo-kai 💝
