As their worlds began to collide with one another, slowly, they began to be pulled away from each other. He knew no such thing as pain or fear. Care or worry. Still, he reached out his hand. His fingers barely getting the chance to trace along the smooth surface of her face. He found himself memorizing every faucet of her as she got further and further away. Care. What was it to care for someone? She knew what a gift was? This thing in his hands was a gift...from her. So why didn't she explain what it meant to 'care' for someone? She smiled at him again and waved her hand. He knew what that gesture meant. It meant 'hello' or 'goodbye'. Since they were leaving each other, he knew her waving was a 'goodbye'. A pang of sadness hit him. Is this what 'missing' someone was like? He did not want to miss her. Still, he knew he had a duty to fulfill. Much like she did. So he rose his arm and began to wave goodbye to her. Moments later both of them were whisked away by a blinding light. The cord holding their worlds together for a time permanently severing. When all was settled, he saw his familiar world. His people rushing to come and meet him. He turned and looked back. Seeing the last remnants of the World of Light permanently receding from this one. Similarly, as her people rushed to meet her, she looked back. Seeing the last of the 'darkness' retreat into the coming night of her world. But for it to never cast it shadows as far as it did ever again. To where he could show his face. She looked down. A sting in her eyes. By the time the first elder reached her, her face was one of joy. Though she was happy to be home, the pain in her heart over never being able to see her friend again would forever be there. Like it was in him as he embraced his people. They could continue to believe the lies. Believe the ruler of light was judgmental and prejudice. Believe the ruler of shadows was cruel and merciless. But in the end, only the rulers themselves, knew themselves. And, for a time, each other. And in their eyes, just the opposite was true of the other. The ruler of shadows was kind and giving. The ruler of light, empathetic and gracious. Be that as it may, for the balance to continue on, they had to remain apart. But that didn't mean they had to forget. While they could never see each other again, when the sun came up or the moon arose, it would serve as a reminder to them both. That there was a world beyond their own. One where enemies could exist on either side. And that neither world was perfect.
