The Revival On The Isle Of Lewis - Awesome account of what happens in a true revival!

Off the west coast of Scotland is a small group of islands called the Hebrides. Between 1949 and 1952 a wide spread revival swept through these islands in answer to the prayers of God's people. Instrumental in this revival was the evangelist Duncan Campbell and two elderly intercessors sisters Peggy and Christine Smith. Duncan Campbell came to the Isle of Lewis to conduct a two week evangelistic campaign and ended up staying two years. This is his personal account of what happened.
In a small cottage by the roadside in the village of Barvas lived two elderly women, Peggy and Christine Smith. They were eighty-four and eighty-two years old. Peggy was blind and her sister almost bent double with arthritis. Unable to attend public worship, their humble cottage became a sanctuary where they met with God. To them came the promise: "I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground," they pleaded this day and night in prayer. One night Peggy had a revelation, revival was coming and the church of her fathers would be crowded again with young people!

This is excellent. The best, most detailed account I have heard of the Hebridean Revival, and what a privilage to hear it from Rev Duncan Cambell himself! You will hear the keys to true revival... It is an overwhelming sense of the holy presence of God that brings an awe of God, the Fear of the Lord, deep conviction of sin, thorough repentence (no backsliding in later years), a lack of worldliness and desire to live in harmony with God's heart and mind, and to serve him all your days. What welcomed in Gods brooding presence? No superficially of religion, but a groaning in the Spirit expressed through days and nights of prayerful repentance and intercession. Will we see the like again in our lifetimes?

Sadly I was only just learning about the Faith Mission and I didn't quite appreciate at the time who i was meeting. But it was an honour to fellowship with them and I never forgot it. Beth Linden, that’s wonderful! I just bought a book by the Peckhams about the revival (I’ve listened to some of her videos on KZbin) and I also bought a biography of Duncan Campbell. I see he visited South Africa in 1957 where my parents were missionaries when I was a child. I’m trying to find out if I may have heard him speak. I have a faint recollection and can only hope my mother made note of it in her sketchy diaries which my sister has! We can be so thankful that we have recordings of him speaking!

I think the young Donald Smith Who was involved in the revival was also a relative. I recently read that he said his mother took him back to Lewis when he was 3 or 4 years old, but he doesn’t remember much. He was born in 1946, so he may have been there during the revival! His mother used to read the Bible to him as a child. I think God may have put in him a love for the people of God and the Word of God and to believe in the power of prayer that is unusual. I am praying that God will do a mighty work in Him during this time of waiting.

Until we are broken and humbled before the Lord, revival can't happen. Our prayer life is minimal (I admit mine is this way also), we are not seeking holiness and there is no honorable fear of God in American Churches. Leonard Ravenhill said that revival won't come to America because we're content to live without it. Sadly, because of prosperity and our now skewed view of freedom, he is right. The Church has compromised every place of the Bible to where our view of Christianity does not resemble the First Century stance through the newly founded Church. Until she repents and we see our despair and the foundation we built is not fully Christ's but much manmade, revival won't come. Too many churches and ministries are building their own Our Christianity is based on what God does for me. True Christianity is how depraved we are and who God is. Even our worship songs focus more on "I" than God. We no longer worship God because He is more an omnipotent servant because of our imperfections than serving and worshiping Him. We rather serve a Christ is more like us than seeking to be more Christlike and let the Holy Spirit come in and guide us in all truth and righteousness. In fact, Ravenhill said in the late eighties God told him His judgment on America is it has no prophets. I believe him. All those "prophets" today are not from God. They are all Hananiah's while Jeremiah is in the pit. We are in dire need of God. If only we would see our cisterns and living the Laodicean way and find they are bad and broken. We need to confess this before Him.

The last thing we need is another outbreak of religious hysteria. What we need is a solid work of God to disciple people and prepare them for coming persecution. Sadly, most churches are far too gone in apostasy to desire anything from God. Thoroughly corrupt they're being cut of from divine blessing. If revival comes it will be among marginalised people outside the established Christian scene and often in small house settings. We need something far more substantial than what happened in Lewis. At least what happened there struck a note of holiness that was completely absent from the nonsense of the Toronto Experience during the 1990s.

Actually they were the great-aunts of Donald Trump’s mother. They were the sisters of her grandfather, Donald Smith, who died fairly young before she was born. I have checked the family tree and the census. It would indeed be strange if there were two sets of sisters named Christine and Peggy Smith that lived in Lewis at that time. There was a younger relative, also named Donald Smith, who was involved with the revival. It is even likely that Donald Trump himself was there when he was 3 or 4 years old. He said his mother took him, but he doesn’t remember much. He was born in 1946 and the revival was 1949-1952. She often went back for a visit but it seems that was the only time she took him.

He never set his heart against his diciples , but rather instead broke bread with them and ecouraged them. 120 people ended up in the upper room , 120 screw ups , 120 sinners and when the Holy Spirit of God descended upon them, 120 Jesus's walked out of that room and completely turned the world upside down. I was blessed to be able to visit Lewis very briefly this June and was told by an elder at Barvas Church of Scotland that the cottage where the sisters prayed had burnt down a little time before they died (perhaps precipitating their moves to nursing homes towards the end of their lives) so if that is what you mean by the ‘prayer barn, I’m afraid it is gone. I tried to find their graves in the cemetery but no-one seems to know if their graves are even marked…yet I will meet them in Heaven, God willing.

So Duncan Campbell believed that there is no salvation for anyone who has not spoken in tongues? Is that an accurate assessment of his belief on glossolalia. I have had that experience by God's grace and I recognize it as powerful for edification or for prophecy with proper interpretation. But I know many godly men and women who are saved who have not experienced this.

Mike Nicholson Per Acts 2:38, God via Peter gave the plan of salvation. We are not drunk as you suppose this is that--Repent, be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit of God gives the utterance. For the promise is unto you and your children and to as many as the Lord our God shall call. Please read the Book of Acts in the Bible or at Acts 2 or at least Acts 2:38. This is the plan of salvation and the beginning of the Christian Church. God would not have you complete only half or 2/3, He would want all to complete His Plan.

@@VickyRBenson Your comment of not believing it was his view is simply stating you do not know exactly what he believed concerning the Biblical declaration and the repeated witness observed verifications of the infilling of the Spirit. Then it is just your hoped for opinion, not what he actually believed. Whether people understood the speech was not the actions most surprising to all. It was a part, but outstanding was they were so boisterous and unusual they seemed intoxicated. They spoke in many "tongues" as Peter explained. He stated this is that, the promise fulfilled of the plan of salvation. The Book of Acts witnesses to it in follow up occurrences. All showing the experience of conversion. All showing speaking in tongues as the outward evidence of the inward experience.

@@mvies77 No, I don’t honestly know what Duncan Campbell’s view was. I’ve heard only a few sermons, and I’ve read the last half of a biography, as of now. Why would I have a “hoped for opinion”? I just haven’t come across anything said or written about speaking in tongues and so evidently it wasn’t an emphasis of the revival among those staid Presbyterians. I’ll keep a look out. When you were quoting Acts 2:38, by the way, you added words that are not there at all! You added your definition, apparently, of what you think it means to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit “with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance,” which isn’t there at all. That’s what happened to them, but it wasn’t “glossolalia” at that time by any means but rather an unction to speak boldly in languages that needed no interpretation. Not that I think it is wrong to speak in tongues; in fact, we are not to forbid to speak in tongues. But the gift of tongues is one of the gifts of the Spirit (as a prayer language which edifies the person praying), seems to be not a gift that everyone has automatically. It’s one of the gifts of the Spirit that the Lord dispenses to believers as He wills. Paul even says to seek rather to prophesy. Anyway, I don’t mean to have an argument over this! I think a better description of being filled with the Spirit is found in Ephesians 5:18 and following. By the way, as a matter of interest, do you think the disciples were not born again until Pentecost? What about when the 11 were together and Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive ye the Holy Spirit”?

@@gypsylily2949 I don’t believe so. I read that the Bible he held up was a Bible that Ivanka took out of her purse and handed to him. It was a shame how what he intended as a meaningful event was portrayed by the media. I listened to his speech in the Rose Garden before he went over. It apparently wasn’t planned. When Barr gave an order to clear protestors back away from the White House, he didn’t even know the President was going to walk across to the “church of the presidents”.as a sign of respect after it had been attacked. Tear gas was used on the protestors because they were pelting the police with hard objects. Trump knew nothing about it. The Bible his mother gave him at age 9 had his name embossed on it. He used it while attending the Jamaica NY Presbyterian Church, held it up in campaign rallies as his “favorite book,” used it along with the Lincoln Bible in his inauguration, and then it was placed in the new Museum of the Bible in Washington DC along with other presidential Bibles. I have never been able to confirm that any Bible from the sisters and the Hebrides revival in Lewis was ever given to him. It seems unlikely, since they spoke Gaelic. Gaelic was his mother’s mother tongue. English was a second language. Since he was born in 1946, and the revival was 1949-1952, it’s quite possible that they were there during the revival. I just wonder if someone prayed over him prophetically or if he was impacted in some way. It's funny but I find atheists seem to have nothing better to do than troll Christian videos. kickinthegob It's funny because I can't sit in my house without Christian missionaries occasionally knocking on the door, I can't walk down the street without a Christian preacher trying to convert me, I can't go through school without the education system trying to indoctrinate me with religious beliefs. Religion even tries to encroach upon science classes and politics. Religion by definition cannot keep itself to itself, the Bible encourages you to convert as many people as you can. So don't whine about atheists expressing their opinions to others, because you clearly don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

Yet you as an atheist can't keep yourself to yourself or your beliefs to yourself. This is that hypocricy I was referring to. You are more judgmental than those you claim are judging, more obtrusive than those Christians you dispise, and my hypocritical than those you think you are better than. Again, why waste the time? Is it to get revenge? I'm not whining here, just noticing a trend amongst atheists that can't stay away from Christian videos and channels. Could this be some deeper hatred towards the things of God? Is it religion you hate or just Christians? Do you spend the same amount of time trolling Buddhists or Muslims?
