I've been told by many that Paprika was really good but it never really made me want to watch. One day, my wife plays it on the streaming platform and I was like "why do you start that? I don't feel like watching an anime right now." She tells me she just wanted to check something that happens in the first 10 minutes. She works in the subtitle industry so she needs to check names etc sometimes, so I didn't think much of it. And what do you know, 10 minutes was all it took to hook me and I watched the full movie. And it was SO GOOD! I loved it so much! My wife admitted she knew I would love it if I watched it a little and she just used a fake reason to start the movie. I've seen it a few times now and I still love it. All that to say, watch Paprika!

A few years ago I was very fascinated with anime movies. I eventually stumbled upon Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue and I was traumatized in the best way. It changed my perspective on film. From its tone, to the editing, and the brilliant script that messes with anyone’s mind. I couldn’t help but call it my favorite movie of all time. Satoshi Kon was a brilliant animator and filmmaker. He created nothing but masterpieces. May he rest in peace while the rest of us wonder what he could’ve done today.

He’s such an incredible soul and that film is an absolute MASTERPIECE ❤️ I’ve pretty much studied it after how many times I watched it to edit my Perfect Blue reaction and yet it never got old! It makes me so sad to think of how much beautiful art was stolen from the world with Satoshi Kon passed away. May his memory be a blessing ❤️

Satoshi Kon is a GENIUS. the symbolism, stories, writing, and visuals are all GOLD,. My top favs are definitely perfect blue, paranoia agent, and Tokyo godfathers, and paprika, all masterpieces for sure. i still need to watch millennium actress and im going to today! also Aronofsky and others ripping off satoshi kon infuriates me, but in the end we all know who the real genius was

this film was honestly so beautiful but like hopeless at the same time. the music was great and like the blur betweem fiction and reality was similar to how they did it in perfect blue, except the energies in the movies were different like hope and horror@@NekoDecoPop

Grasping at the works of a genius is insanity-inducing but it's nothing short of a life-affirming miracle all the same. Kon's works and mindsets as portrayed through his characters and stories are all indescribably valuable to me and have taught me so much. I so much appreciate your warm and profound appreciation of him and his work that you shared in this video.

I loved reading this 💙 thank you so much for sharing your journey with him along with your kind words about the video. Tokyo Godfathers is definitely the one that I cry to the most, it’s just so heartfelt and wonderful and that ending just AHHHHH I wish there was an episode so we could see how they all faired after the events especially with the wild card of the lottery ticket added into the mix I definitely agree about the similarities but also differences between him and Miyazaki. I think especially with Miyazaki, yes he touched on dark subjects, but it was usually just to visit and then resolve them. With Satoshi Kon he sat with them. He held the space with them. And because of that, it helped all of us who have been in those spaces alone I’ve been thinking a lot about Satoshi Kon today with the news of Akira Toriyama’s passing and how these masters of their craft keep getting taken from us far too soon. Hopefully they’re able to geek out over stuff together now and support each other in whatever’s next 💙

@@NekoDecoPop You're sooooo right about him sitting with and holding space for dark and difficult and imo important issues-I also appreciate that through his works he encourages the viewer to do the same. His familiarity with and willingness to explore so many perspectives, in particular his well-written female and LGBTQ characters, just make me feel like he was a truth-seeker and really had a sensitive, genuine, and courageous soul. I, too, hope that both Toriyama and Kon out there scheming and creating worlds and stories beyond anything we could imagine. Also side note, despite being an anime lover since I was a child in the early 2000s, I'm somehow still a tiny queer fetus Yuasa virgin and have gotten close to watching The Tatami Galaxy a few times but just haven't been able to commit to it. I've seen you recommend his work in a few vids now, so I know I will enjoy all of it, but do you have a recommended watch order for his films or like best first watches to get hooked on his filmography?

Inception/Paprika plot was totally different.They might have 2 similar scenes but it was likely done by VFX guy.Nolan was working on Inception for a long time.

So was Satoshi Kon tho who started working on Paprika in 1998. Yes they have different plot lines but you can’t ignore the plethora of imagery that was “inspired” by Paprika at best and ripped off of it at worst

I’m really glad that I found your video on Satoshi Kon. I’ve been a big fan of his since the early 2000s when I first watched paprika. So i have seen all of his published movies except for millennium actress. And I have watched a good bit of paranoia agent, though I need to finish it. I do hope eventually the movie he was working on gets published

Great video! I agree with all of it. For some reason I'd never considered that Chiyoko Fujiwara had dementia, but it makes so much sense now. I'm counting the years until my son is old enough to appreciate Tokyo Godfathers, as it's also my favorite Christmas movie (though as of this year the Holdovers is up there, too)!

With Chiyoko it was a super quick throwaway line that was hidden in there, I definitely didn’t pick up on it the first time I watched it. I'm not familiar with anime in general but I certainly know Inception and Requiem, so was very interested to see your observations regarding influence and "homage". It's like the American film makers used the anime films as storyboards.

I think you would really enjoy his films, they’re really on a different level from the bulk of anime and as a film fan I think you would really connect with some of them. And yes, those American film makers definitely used aspects of Satoshi Kon’s work as part of their storyboards. At least Darren Aronosfky has admitted to be “inspired” by Kon’s work but I don’t think Christopher Nolan has ever even acknowledged it publicly 😔
