Throughout my childhood I was raised Catholic. Once I arrived at my late teens and early adulthood, I was an atheist. I've been practicing Catholicism going on five years now, and yet have countless imperfections to overcome with the help of the Lord and my mother, the blessed Virgin. Throughout these five years I've read on many saints and their lives just amaze me. I am aware that one of my main obstacles is my extreme concupiscence, and that I need the weapons of silence, prayer, and penance to overcome it. Virtue is it's own reward, sin is it's own punishment. I am just now hearing about St. Peter of Alcantara. Such an amazing saint! I never would've thought that this would be my desire, to truly become a saint. THE CATHOLIC WAS BORN FOR COMBAT. - POPE LEO XIII

Thank you for this great video! I have two questions: 1) Why is it that certain penances must be approved by our confessor? 2) Beyond fasting and abstaining from meat, what are other feasible penances we may perform without consulting our confessor? Thank you

I am not an authority, but (1). To make sure you are OK, health wise. For example some just do penance (say without confession) and God won’t give graces to take care the rigours. (2). Avoid whatever you likes, is the simplest alternative. Considering increasing the frequency of mass and prayers as a form of penance as well.

To my understanding, heavy penances have the risk of being taken too far too quickly, and therefore require in most cases, by prudence, to have a spiritual director for guidance. There is also the huge risk of pride setting in - and by giving your obedience to another, it tests your sincerity. However, it is unfortunately the case that during this eclipse of the Church that we now find ourselves in, most priests would not understand the benefit of even the tinniest external mortification; and so it might be difficult to find a confessor who would permit such a thing. I do not think it is a sin to do penances without first seeking permission unless you have been previously ordered not to, or unless it would be unwise in your circumstance. But if you take it on, just be very careful. Start with the basics first. Consider the story of St Dominic Savio, a good student of St John Bosco. The little saint wished to do hard penance to become a saint. But he was forbidden from doing so once his holy schemes were discovered. Out of obedience, not being able to do those penances became the harder penance for him. He was sickly and a student, and so his state in life did not really allow for such harsh penances - which would have only made his health worse. I hope that helps.

I don't find this useful. Renounce sensuality. Okay... well, I'm fully onboard with no sex until marriage, no pornography, etc. However, sometimes life just has to be worth living. I accept the need to engage in penance but reject what I suspect to be the underlying message of this video.

The only point is that you must make sure your eternity will be in Heaven. Some are given more graces or talents and they have to live in accordance with that (to even justify their entrance to Heaven.) As the saying goes, we are made for eternity and earthly life is merely a testing ground. Lastly, it is not your understanding which gives you eternity but God’s decision. So make sure you meet the requirements as the case may be. But all who have found the treasure of Heaven knows how to fetch it.

Perhaps I should clarify a bit. I've KNOWN families that subscribe to this kind of extreme "no sensuality" prescription -- non-religious entertainment is forbidden, no dancing, and other extreme measures. The common link amongst those families is that their children abandon their faith (and who can blame them).

@@zthroescha In any case, vast majority of those who profess the faith are not saved. Only very few are saved: I would say majority of religious and a very minority of laity among Catholics. And of course, no one else Protestants included. Don’t worry, just be be truthful, and God will help you. Or better, seek first His kingdom, everything else for this short life will be added! I could see you are yet to appreciate the eternity or who is God. That is natural of the age/time.

For Heaven's Sake, somebody else needs to weigh in on this conversation (aside from Homelander) because I'm looking for a strong Catholic community but am rapidly getting horrified by the crowd on this channel. I'm pretty sure I'm getting trolled, but nobody else has weighed in.
