I harvested rice before in my country in West Africa, in the village.I used to have itchy reactions from the sheaves. We had to manually separate the husk rice from the sheaves. Rose you are amazing.

One of my uncles married an aunt whose family were farmers. She reminded me when I was a little girl, not to waste any rice as each piece rice required lots of work. I never have, I clean the plate or bowl, no rice left :)

In my village in Nigeria, we used sickles like the one you have Rose to harvest our rice. We tied the bundles together and stashed them in a dry area. There would be approximately a 3ft wide in circumference by 4ft deep depth. It would be beaten smooth to prevent excess soil or stones. We would beat the bundles against the edge of the hole, and the rice would fill the hole to be gathered into bags and transported into storage at home. I have a question. How do you prevent birds from eating your rice? We had scarecrows, and sometimes, someone sat and made noise to keep birds from the field. We had one of the world's varied exotic species. I left Nigeria almost 40 years ago. Things might have changed. So the battle was between the field mice and birds during rice harvest season😂
