I was 100% an abolitionist on the topic of the British Monarchy, but since reading up on the topic, most experts agree that the Queen and her immediate Royal family are worth their weight in gold (which is still less than what they're paid) in regards to tourism. However, the many extended family that receive actual salaries in taxpayer money each year are not.

The monarchy does make the country money. The army being pledged to queen prevents a military take over by the politicians. I'm generally a believer in the system that has worked the best for the longest time shouldn't be tampered with without good reason. I think we have something which sets us apart from every other western nation

The liberation of catalonia is a difficult topic because where do you draw the line? Can anyone vote to become their own country because they live there and have for the last X-years. Look at burma where the muslims want to become their own country but the buddhist won't let them and a conflict with lives being wasted on both sides. I live in Sweden and as you all know a lot of migrants have entered our country the last 30 years or so. and today 43 % of the population of Malmö consists of people who are immigrants (or their parents). Let us say that in a couple of years migrants become the majority in Malmö, should they have the right to cast a vote to become independent? or how many years have to go by before a vote is valid, 100, 200? The situation in Catalonia is of course different than any of my examples because of the history, and I believe that they should have the right to at least vote about it. I am not sure that a yes vote automatically should lead to an independent Catalonia. Any way, I love these shows and Sam, good luck with the casting, maybe a new Richard and Sam duo is on the horizon. Love you guys, peace!

The referendum in spain was ruled unconstitutional by the spainish supreme court. Which means there is no reason to vote if you are against independence. By voting one would accept the validity of the referendum. So obviously most of the people who were against independence didn't vote. Why would they? It was illegal anyways. So 90% in favor of independence means absolutly nothing when only 42% of all people participated. I find the current indepence movements in several part of europe concering. Before the second world war every generation had to endure at least one war in their lifetime. Now all those countries who waged war against each other for centuries are part of the european union. Even the strongest nations in europe wouldn't be where they are now without it. The idea that leaving the EU would improve the situation of any country is fucking stupid. At the beginning of the 19th century germany consisted of hundreds of small parts, each with their own duke and laws. Joining all of those together made germany what it is today. Not every little province being independent

The reason the royal family is kept in "power" is because: 1) they don't really have any real legislative or executive power. They nominally have those powers, but if they ever actually use them the end result would be simply every country in the Commonwealth declaring themselves republics. 2) even discounting tourism, the royal family actually is actually a net profit for the government because the royal family lease all the land they own to the government for free. And unlike most of Europe, the UK didn't really have any period of absolutism to my knowledge so I'm pretty sure there's no justification whatsoever to seize any part of the lands (at least, no more than any private citizen's).

The crown makes the UK much more than it costs. In exchange for the royal family's living expenses to be paid for by the UK government. The royal family allows the profits made from land that they legally own to go back to the government. This benefits them because they don't have to worry about managing it, but it nets the UK a profit. Also, you're enormously under-valuing the tourism factor. The royal family's gross cost to the government is 40 million dollars a year. But tourism brings in 7 billion dollars per year, and this is thanks to the novelty of a real monarchy still in operation. Obviously tourists would still come to the UK if the royalty factor wasn't in play, but it's certainly an attractive novelty, that really doesn't hurt anything. it's a win-win really.

I realise this video is pretty old now but whatever Scotland being 8% of the UK's GDP and Catalonia being 20% of Spain's, these are both (roughly) the percentage of the population as well, anyway. Scotland being 5m/65m, and Catalonia being 7.5/46m. In terms of referendums being binding, you're right, although it's important to realise that the Scottish independence referendum *was* binding, so if it passed, Scotland was going to be independent.

I'd just like to say if Scottish people had been stopped from voting in the independence referendum it would of been an international scandal and the UK government would of been condemned by everyone in europe, funny how that doesn't seem to happen with Spain. There is a distinction between being against Scottish independence and being and supporting their right to vote on it. I was against independence as I feel that scotland has more in common with the rest of the UK than it has with europe or any other group of nations, that doesnt mean I think the vote shouldn't of happened

Hey Rich, great podcast, but I just wanted to clarify that you CAN absolutely get diseases from having sex with animals. As a veterinarian you have to be extremely careful when manipulating animals infected with things like Brucelosis, Q Fever, Campylobacteriosis, Leptospirosis which can be contracted when helping in the birthing process of cows or sheep, so I am 100% certain if someone were to have sex with an infected animal they could get a disease. (that being said, I have yet to hear of a zoonotic disease that was then contagious amongst humans - especially a veneral one. Also please don't have sex with animals, this should go without saying.)

Richard Lewis Oh apologies I must've misunderstood. I thought the myth was spread because there is infact evidence of similar retroviral strains in chimps that could have been transmitted to humans. Obviously the sex part is quite unlikely and more possible that the spread was due to mosquito bites or open wounds.

You really need to read up on the Catalonia issue, Richard. It's nothing like Scotland at all, and not even remotely similar to things like the old USSR countries either. In USSR times they were countries being occupied by another country. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania etc. were never Russian, they were foreign countries under occupation by the Russians. Scotland isn't a part of England, it's a different country in a union with England. Scotland has a long history of independence and as a completely separate country. Catalonia is nothing like either one. There was never an independent country called Catalonia, it's not a country being occupied by a foreign power, they're not in any way oppressed etc. It sounds like you just bought into their outright propaganda honestly. It's all absolute BS. There once was an entity called Principality of Catalonia, but it was never independent. It was always a region under either Crown of Aragon, Crown of Castile (and Aragon since they formed a union - to eventually form Spain of today) or Crown of France. Their history is a regional one, not a national one. Saying it existed before Spain is sort of nonsensical honestly, as the Crown of Aragon (which the region of Catalonia was a part of) and the Crown of Castile were united to form what's Spain today. Spain is just a "new" name (Not actually new but just newer than their previous names obviously), the place, the people etc. still existed before that. Just like the relatively recent formation of Germany, of Italy etc. doesn't mean that nothing was there before they decided to unite under a single name. Plenty of regions have their own languages and even more used to have them. The only reason the Catalan people still speak theirs to a large extent is exactly because Spain didn't oppress them. Had France kept control of the place the language would likely be dead, as they've been very hard to regional languages. Just look at Breton (from Brittany) for example. The Welsh also had their own language and so did the Cornish etc, the English were just way more oppressive than the Spanish were so now they sort of don't anymore. At least not nearly to the same extent as the region of Catalonia does. Pretty much every single part of Europe used to have its own culture, own language, own traditions etc. They've just been destroyed by oppressive rulers over time. The only reason Catalan still flourishes is because Spain was less oppressive than most other countries in Europe. There's nothing particularly special about them as a region, besides the fact that they've been allowed to keep their own culture, own language, preferential treatment (amount of autonomy compared to other regions who *actually* were independent in the past) etc. They were somewhat oppressed under Franco, but so was everyone else in Spain who didn't agree with him. He was a fascist dictator after all. It's not remotely like USSR or Scotland at all. It's more like Sussex suddenly deciding they want independence because they're doing well economically and don't want to help the rest of England. It's just a region wanting independence and using outright lies and propaganda to make up some sort of "independence claim" for people to buy into. They've hired actors to make "Help Catalonia!" plea videos full of scripted and falsified claims, school children come home asking their parents "Are we independist or fascist?" because it's in their fucking schools as well, they write slurs on houses of people or businesses not being pro-independence like the Nazis wrote on Jewish shops etc, their media refused to really cover the huge pro-Spain protests happening in Barcelona etc as they want to portray a "We all want independence!" image. They also love to claim that they'll stay in EU etc. which will never happen, as they're only in the EU because Spain is. Most of the world won't even recognize an independent Catalonia so they won't even get to apply for memberships of EU, NATO and similar things in the first place. The reason they won't be recognized is exactly that there's no actual claim for their independence so if that's allowed and recognized, every single country in the world can suddenly just break up at any time, and that'd make things like trade deals, international treaties, alliances, peace treaties etc. void instantly. You'd never know who you were making a deal with if people could just decide to declare independence next Monday. Imagine making a trade deal or military alliance with Spain and then in a month there's only Madrid left in the country of Spain. It'd all be worthless. That's also why we've already seen over a thousand companies moving their HQ away from Catalonia during this mess. They're fully aware of it being pointless for them to remain in Catalonia as they won't have access to the EU market, and even if they don't become independent, business *HATES* instability, and so do investors. Who's going to invest in a place that might leave the EU market in a week and may suddenly change rules and laws regarding taxation overnight? And what happens if Catalonia becomes independent and then Barcelona decides it doesn't want to pay for the poorer parts of Catalonia and now it wants independence for itself? It has the exact same (lack of) right to independence as Catalonia does. You honestly think an independent Catalonia would just go "Sure, that's your right!"? lol Hell, even the other regions like the Basque country don't support Catalan independence as they simply don't have an actual claim for it. Oh, and I'm not even Spanish btw so I guess I could decide not to care at all. It's not like it'll impact my life here in Denmark, but just about everything you said is simply wrong so I had to comment.
@RLewisReports7 жыл бұрын
> Catalonia is nothing like either one. There was never an independent country called Catalonia, it's not a country being occupied by a foreign power, they're not in any way oppressed etc. Glad you typed up such a long comment but don't know any history about Catalonia. Catalonia was an independent region until it married into an alliance with Aragon in the 12th century. It fought against Spain in the 1600s and after that war part of Catalonia was handed over to the French as part of the peace process. In the 1930s, long after the region had come back together again, it was given its own government by Spain. During the Spanish civil war Franco shut down most Catalan institutions and abolished their language. Your claims make no sense.
