If you have a strong self esteem, why would you spend your whole life trying to impress people that you don't like, and they don't like you ? You should have enough character to spend money on things that you do like, and bring happiness. Some of those things may be helping out homeless people sleeping out in the cold, or putting food on the table for a very poor family. You don't have to try to impress people by buying expensive things to say - "I'm a somebody". People with a strong sense of self, don't really care, what others think. On the other hand, you can carry things too far the other way, like that Cousins guy who stays in his parents basement ? - like he's paranoid about money, and maybe losing it, so he may never enjoy some things he'd like too ? Everybody to themselves, but I think you have to find some middle ground, so you can enjoy life, but it doesn't have to be lavish.
