The "cat mops" Karl refers to are an example of "Chindōgu", the Japanese comedy art of inventing useless objects, for amusement rather than practicality. I have a number of books on the subject. As is so often the case, Karl had a good point, but bizarrely failed to back it up with a single good example. He could have said moveable type, paper, porcelain, gunpowder, alcohol, tea, etc, but no, he says "cat mops", which not only are a joke, but not even Chinese. 😂

The thing with the Chinese trains is not necessarily that they don't have toilets, but that they are so overcrowded (people standing), the no-one can move to even get to the toilet. So, because of that, a lot of people wear adults nappies (daipers) during the journey. Also if you want to see Karl being an idiot abroad but with a friend in tow, wait for Season 3 :)

There are toilets in trains in China. I went to go in the train station before the ride. As I got close to the side of the platform with the bathrooms, I recoiled away from the smell. I was still yardssss from the bathrooms. The bathroom on the train is like that scene in Trainspotting the worst toilet in Scotland, except this squat toilet is also shaking from the train's movement. It was an overnight train. I was 🥺 I had a tiny tiny sip of water before going to sleep and 1 more sip in the morning before finally arriving to my city. Yeah but that was 2010. Riding the trains in 2015 as an American, you look around at the amenities, the concience and efficacy of public transit, the comfort of the train, plus the glimpses thru the window of countrysides and small farming towns you are never going to get to go to but you can look into for a few fleeting seconds

The best of British, in my humble ancient opinion: The really really really ancient stuff: Take a pew - Alan Bennett George, don't do that - Joyce grenfall Strange 80's stuff that's super obscure: Comic strip presents: Mr jolly lives next door (forerunner to bottom - a few years after 'the young ones'. So many cultural references will pass you by sadly - yeah, it was illegal to buy a pint at 3pm until the 90's) Five go mad in dorset: takes the piss out of the famous five books. Notable for being broadcast on the 1st night of Channel 4 in 1982. It was the most complained about comedy program on British TV, until..... Brass eye. Specifically the peadogeddon episode. (I think the drugs episode is funnier, simply because they managed to get parliament to seriously discuss whether cake should be banned in the UK) How about reacting to radio for a change? Blue jam monologues. There is no funnier writing ever written.

Dear American friends, if you're learning British slang from listening to Karl, please be very careful. Karl is a very odd little man and often gets it completely wrong. "Knocking one out" for example, does not mean dropping a deuce, but quite another, typically solo, male pasttime. Asking where you can "knock one out" in England is likely to get you an unwanted reputation.

It's kinda just the nature on life in England on a council estate. If you're lucky you might have a local park, about 1/20 of the size of an America park, and nothing like the skate parks, basically a field full of dog faeces. Other than that a small corner shop, which is where the kids normally hang out. And boredom and emptiness leads to high crime. Gang mentality etc. Aspirations are so low, It's the dealer with a beat up old high mileage BMW, that's the talk of the neighbourhood. Wouldn't be far off the projects in America...
