"On June 30, 1942, Euler replied to Goldbach stating that:" 😉 (6:05). No, he didn't! Big typing error: 1742 was meant not 1942. (200 years difference).

Smart and lively lecturer, he deserved a larger and livelier audience. Even though the audience probably didn't notice, I think he should have taken more trouble to correct numerous spelling mistakes in mathematicians' names (e.g. Poincaré, de la Vallée Poussin, von Mangoldt) and quotations in German (from Goldbach, Euler and Riemann). But it was a nice touch playing Hilbert's radio address at the end.

But wasn't the idea of "Wir müssen wissen, wir werden wissen" rather destroyed by Gödel? If you accept that you can either have complete knowlege which is inconsitent or consistent knowledge that is incomplete mean that we can never know everything?
@raphaelreichmannrolim254 жыл бұрын
In some way, yes. But this wasn't the opinion of Gödel himself.
@robert-skibelo2 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. Two different things. Hilbert's slogan was a way of saying "we must continue extending our knowledge". Gödel did exactly this, he extended our knowledge by discovering some new facts about what mathematical systems are capable of.
