Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard being recruited to be an Astronaut by the two NASA "root weevils" played by Jeff Goldblum and Harry Shearer.
for Naval Aviators it has the two best lines in the movie. "Are you SURE the Navy has Good Pilots? They Call Them AVIATORS In the Navy. They Say they are BETTER Than Pilots!!!" and 'Sounds Dangerous. Count Me In"

When this movie was released, all of the astronauts said they didnt like the fact that the NASA engineers and scientists were portrayed as bumbling idiots. The Astros said that the engineers and scientists were top notch.

Im cinema, the audience often needs an antagonist to bring it to the conclusion the director wants. It was an effective way to show the audoence that the astronauts were all pulling together. Just coming out and saying that doesn't have the impact of demonstrating it, and having them all buddy-buddy with everyone creates no drama.

It's common American tradition to think of engineers as geeks, and pilots as somehow better and more desirable. Hollywood is only giving audiences what they expect to see. You'll need to chance American society's attitudes about academics before you'll see a change from Hollywood.

@RocketToTheMoose
@RocketToTheMoose 8 ай бұрын
On some navy planes, moving the throttles to full military power will automatically close the speed brakes. They always go to full throttle on hitting the deck, so if they bolter (miss all the wires), the engine has enough power available to take off again. Having the speed brakes close automatically as soon as that happens means the pilot won't have to worry about trying to get in the air again with the brakes still open.

This scene is great at showing how average people can't even handle standing on the aircraft carrier deck and the aviator is calm and joking around before landing on one! Best of the best! They call it a controlled crash!

I took my 10 year old son on a Tiger Cruise coming home from Pearl to Alameda. We were light on aviation fuel and heading west to east with a storm generating heavy seas from the north. We were rocking and rolling like never before. My Son got sick repeatedly for several days.

@@spydude38 Maybe I am unusual, but we lost 85 feet of the gangway port-side in a heavy sea, and I tied a nut to a string to see the movement and it was in inches, but then I was in a P boat after we lost the engine and watching the other officers do tech color chunks, I was fine, but jumping from the P boat always scared the charlie romeo alpha papa out of me. I hope the rest of the trip made up for the sickness of your son.

You need to watch some old war sea movies....where the waves splashed over the flight deck. Big as a carrier is, rough seas can throw her around pretty good. However in this shot, looks like a flat calm sea.

Apparently, “The Right Stuff” had a $6 million loss on a $27 million budget. That baffles my mind. This movie makes every man in the world feel like a proud American. The cast was the best the early eighties had to offer; the writing was awesome; and the story itself was amazing. I bet there are some 60-year-old hard-core Somali militants in Mogadishu who LOVE this movie. “Down with America! Those terrible imperialists! Hey guys, do you want to watch ‘The Right Stuff’? John Glenn is my hero! Yeah! USA! USA! USA! Uh, well, you gotta love the astronauts, right?” “Hey! What about Neil Armstrong? He’s MY hero!” “Good point Hamid, but Armstrong wasn’t in the Mercury program.” “Yeah, and how about Buzz Aldrin? That guy is the BEST! Remember when he punched that moon-hoaxer? That was epic!”

In a storm? Let me tell you, if you don't think 100,000 tons of warship won't roll and pitch, guess again. There were guys that went green and wound up in sickbay.
