I completely agree they should be given the right to both strike and have a decent wage. But that should not come at the expense of other people’s livelihoods. But one thing that would help train workers would be to renationalise them.

When a Conservative supports trade unions, we know we need to strengthen them to the point they despise them. It is nice to see this Conservative not absolutely rabid against trade unions, but meh. Unions should not be willing partners you toss a bone to, they should be a force that strikes fear into employers and their lackeys in government, that is as powerful as the working class is numerous.

People go on strike for all kinds of reasons.Mostly money or the employer takes them for granted.Over the last twenty years that right to strike withdraw your labour has been tremendously eroded.Employers force labour to become staff or zero hrs contracts no rights whatsoever.Employers like slaves who obey.Not all of them mind you but they don't like unions to question the system.

Did I hear this correctly? The honourable professor hinted that becoming more embedded with the EU would result in the inability for TfL workers to strike?!? (as they would be considered essential under EU law?!). And people wonder the the working class wanted to leave the EU?? I'm really confused by the professors point, the professor seemed to think legislation making workers essential and therefore unable to strike, was 'good and normal'?? That was my interpretation!!

You realize the immense responsibility train drivers have when suddenly they get a call regarding diverting signals or sudden halts or manual intervention?! As someone who has a family member who drives trains, I can assure you that's FAR from "automatic". ".... Do you even realize what the added value is for a society, bus drivers, train drivers, tube drivers?! David Starkey is ignorant as hell! You have to know your route like the back of your hand, signal/junction locations and braking distance, trauma from jumpers, the abnormal drop out rate from tests etc. etc. Be my guest, they shouldn't strike right?!
