The Right Way to Use a Ferro Rod

I refuse to get into a debate over the proper way to strike a ferro rod. But I would like to offer my humble opinion that there is more than one way, and each way has a place. I am not an instructor. But I have watched many experts strike the ferrocerium rod effectively in a number of ways. I say, become proficient in every possible way there is to use a tool. #fire #survival #outdoors #bushcraft #camping

there's more because it matters "how". If you're in survival scenario then you also want to save on resources, if you know you can use something in a different way that will use less of it, or in a way that makes the leftovers reusable the same or another way then it's always better to opt for it. The household equivalent of that also exist. For example what can you do with a leftover chicken soup, you can just eat it but more optimal way would be to filter it, chicken stock can be mixed with tomato paste to make more nutritious soup and the leftover vegetables and bones can be thrown into a composter, any leftovers meat can be fried or cooked in an oven and you don't even have to season it cause it was sitting in flavorful soup for days

@@carlerwinsabijon8646 I agree with your statement. Not the overall message. If you get the result you NEED from your action, it’s not a waste of resources. What you said ABSOLUTELY applies if you have some dry tender and a bic but opt to make fire using duct tape and a ferro rod. But that’s not the message being conveyed in this video, my friend. Hope this helps!

@@PedroLucas-cs9yeyeah so basically he's showing us both are right ways, one allows the spark to catch flame on the cotton easily because the cotton is stuck together, but for the thicker matterial that is harder to catch flame, you don't want to accidentally push it away, so you pull on the blade to keep the fire fuel in the same place.

I can dry my Ferro rod in seconds no matter where I am, get a spark even if it's slightly damp. A lighter if it's wet and frozen cold that shit isn't going to dry when you need it. What if all your shit gets soaked you fell in the water and need fire to heat you up NOW. Or freeze to death.. I'll take the rod, which also takes less dexterity that you might not have when frozen from being ice dunked Or with frostbitten/frostburnt hands (you'd never work a lighter) like ice solid fingers, we're talking you can only close your hand by the palm. The fingers DO NOT WORK from the cold. A rod and knife is the only thing that will save you from proceeding to comepletely lose function of your hands.. then limbs. Hypothermia
@brandonzachman7771

@@colegoulet1023 simple bic lighter will work if wet. The key is to double check your gear before you use it in the field. Some disposable lighters don't work great when wet. Others do. Some float, some don't. A ferro rod is good back-up, but shouldn't be your primary or even secondary ignition source.

The metal is iron. Iron is filled with carbon, the carbon lights the iron on fire if you get it hot by striking it with very hard materials like flint. So pulling the flint on the steel will make better sparks than dragging the steel on the flint, as pictured. other types of fire starter use reactive firestarter instead of inert materials, so your milage may vary if you aren't sure what you have. if in doubt alternate till you decide which works best.
