/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down The Ring.
-
Over the last week or so I've burned through the original japanese trilogy, the non canon sequel spiral and the american remake obsessing over the tape. If I'm dead in seven days then you know what happened but like the characters in the movie it was difficult to stop myself.
I think The Rings one of the most unforgettable horrors of all time and that final scene is forver burned into my memory. I was actually someone that saw the remake before the original and I didn't get around to watching that until years later. However it opened up the well and made me become fascinated with the genre with the original trilogy being one of my favourites of all time.
Throughout this video we're gonna be doing a deep dive on both Ringu and it's american counterpart to talk about all the creepy that are layered in them. This will also talk about the ending and always where they differ putting together the major differences and things that they changed.
If you enjoy it then please hit the thumbs up button and dont forget to subscribe for videos like this every week. If you don't then in the next seven days...you'll...you'll not see the next one...so yeah please do mate and thanks for the support.

If only all American remakes of Asian horror movies were good like this! Not only it's scary af, the acting, atmosphere and photography of the remake are amazing.
@TheKrilicious

What the The Ring got right was not losing anything in translation. Ringu is of course a bit different when it comes to pacing, plot, characters and themes, but Gore Verbinski managed to capture the atmosphere for The Ring, while still updating the story for western audiences, which is why it has stood the test of time. This is what all the other American remakes are lacking since they just wanted to jump on the fad and went like "let's just do the same thing but with white actors and lots of CGI"
@moonlady3000
@moonlady3000 8 ай бұрын
@@TheKriliciousI feel like the same can be said for The Grudge. The same director did both versions and you could tell that he had a vision and made it work for both audiences.

@@moonlady3000 Kinda yes. They're almost the same movie though in my opinion, except in the remake the leads are white Americans. Structurally the remake is also more streamlined to have more of a typical start and finish as supposed to the chapters that the original had

@@TheKrilicious Well said. It's not easy to translate the work to Western tastes while still keeping the atmosphere of the original. Sadly they couldn't do justice to the sequel due to studio interference.

@lanapearce9968 My babysitter used to play the Friday the 13th movies and Nightmare on Elm, sequels and all, when I like 6. I was so scared to sleep, get outta bed (I thought Freddy would be waiting to grab my feet and pull me under), go to the bathroom (I thought Freddy would be waiting for me there as well...I specifically remember thinking his razor hand was gonna come through the toilet and grab my butt 😂). My dad had me sleep with my older sister and later bought me a little stuffed dog that had a radio in it for me to listen to. Finally one night after me again scared to sleep, in exasperation, my dad called our babysitter at like 2am and yelled, "if you keep showing my daughter these movies you come stay up with her!" 😂😂😂 I did have a very scary dream about Chuckie around age 8 or so but funny enough the movie didn't scare me too much (I guess it must have on a subliminal level though!)

I saw the Ring at a pre screening and I seriously could not sleep for 2 days after. I kept seeing the image over and over again in my head. I often wondered if they used some sort of other subliminal things in the movie to mess with the viewers. Experiencing a movie where MOST of the adults in the theater gasped or screamed out loud when she came out of the tv, is something I will never forget. Man, I miss good ol’ days.

Every time I rewatch the film I know the ending scene is coming up and isn't as impactful. That scene with the daughter though, that scene. . .

Love these classic breakdowns. This one is a personal fave. I was obsessed with Japanese Horror Films after watching Ringu. Even wrote an essay at Uni about the Americanization of Japanese Horrors, a video like this about 15 years ago would have helped massively. Like to pride myself on the subject but I never knew the same author wrote Ringu & Dark Water, that's a nice little fact I won't forget. Keep up the good work.

One thing a lot of people overlook is the culture shock factor to foreign horror movies. When you watch a foreign horror movie, you're taken further out of your element because you're unfamiliar with the culture. It adds another "unknown" which can enhance and improve the scary/creepy factor.

Back when I heard about the American version coming out, I had Netflix (back in the old disc days) and rented Ringu. I loved it! I really enjoyed the Ring American version, too, but I really hated how they telegraphed the TV scene at the end. With Ringu, I had no idea and thought the movie was sort of over when that happened. It was amazing. The boy exclaiming that she released her was a telegraph that would have been better to leave out to get people without any idea it would be coming.

You missed the part where, as this movie was new as I was with I was my high school girlfriend, this movie came out. I decided to set her CRT television to alarm wakeup at 3 a.m. Later, I decided to turn off the alarm. We grew up on VHS, but there was a lot of tapes in her house; also, I understood how much it shook her up, and we had a great day together anyways. The TV went to static at a time that I didn't set, and she never forgave me because she was sure it was part of a master plan. I turned the alarm off, and didn't set the time. Anyways, excellent movie, excellent breakdown, excellent people. Travelling down time 3 years later we realized we just couldn't be.

Also nostrils are fairly circular which is also how rings are shaped and most if not all the characters do indeed bear noses in the middle of their faces and as we all know faces are round with noses in the middle and if we slow down the footage we clearly see two nostrils at the ends of each nose which is spelled with a perfect O between the N and the S while S is actually two broken rings stacked on top of each other with the words "on", "top" and "of" all three heavily dependent on ring shapes to spell and of course the number 3 when smashed down creates a ring. It's easy to miss so I figured I would point it out for you. Also pointing things out can be a circular endeavor when two or more people go back n forth and even going back and forth is what rings do when we share them as a group standing in a circle which is a nod to the hands of a clock which spin in a ring pattern. Thanks again for all your hard work which could also be referred to as a big fat zero and zeroes are traditional Japanese inspiration for rings if we look through the two circles above our noses then we can see the moon, two more circles there when Moon isn't improperly spelled as "Muun" and so yeah... I shouldn't have to do your job for you.

"OH SHIIITTT!!!, "NOOOOO!!! to SCREAMS from EVERYBODY when Samara came threw the TV. was the MOST insane moment I ever experienced while watching a flick in a theater. Ex was wiping tears and all that. Lmmfao. Soooo surreal, and I will NEVER forget that movie. I own it multiple times over. Ha. After the movie, ex and I joked about how dude and his daughter left too early. I KNOW he musta found out about the 3nding, at least, like, "REALLY??" The experience he could never experience, ever. That said, I then rented Ringu - Uhhh, nooo. To me, it was just one too many plot lines going on with the psychic bs, and it made the movie even cornier. Something I think you could have gone in to, since you brought it up, were that Sadako and Kayako were onryos. That is why they share similarities in appearance and how they go about killing others. They're both vengeful spirits attacking anyone and everyone who finds them. It's actually quite sad when you learn how the two became the ghost they did.

I love this format of comparing originals alongside their remakes! Great idea! Personally, I think the original Japanese versions were superior because they gave more backstory, but the remakes did have some of the better scares.

Foreign horror movies are always better than the American remakes for one big reason: culture shock. Since it's being made in a foreign country by a foreign company in a foreign culture, it has an inherent unknown/creepy factor because you're unfamiliar with the culture, it takes you out of your element and puts you in a different mindset. When Hollywood remake foreign horror movies, they remove that aspect in localization. The best movie that makes use of this is Kairo (Pulse, the original, not hollywood remake). I contend that Kairo is the scariest movie ever made, beating even movies like The Exorcist.

Fun fact about Koji Suzuki’s book, Sadako is confirmed during the book to be intersex, but never does Koji use this as some kind of body horror trope. He’s surprisingly respectful about this detail

It wasn't Sadako's father. No one knows who her father is. The guy who put Sadako in the well was her mother's manager, he said that her mother wanted a baby and she would go and pray for a baby in a cave near the beach, then one day she came back and had a baby. Also he didn't kill her. In the second movie they say she was alive in the well for 40 years. That's why she's so powerful because she was stuck in the well all that time and her psychic energy was building and building and she was filling it with rage. Sadako was an adult filled with over 40 years of concentrated rage. Also I just want to say that Racheal killed that horse!

Both versions put serious emphasis on the unnatural birth of Sadako/Samara. I think this video didn't give this proper attention. In Ringu it was some sea spirit. In The Ring she was conceived after some mysterious trip to Asia.

@@lessismore8533 I'm not saying it being a remake is bad. I don't even like Ringu. It's just unusual for a remake to have this much effort put into it. They gave Samara her own theme song for God's sake. They didn't have to do that. Sadako doesn't have one.

When my mom rented the original Japanese movies The Ring(Ringu), the Grudge(Ju-On) from Blockbuster or Hollywood video.. we all watched them bunched together on and around the couch in utter terror! The subtitles make it scarier because the words about what Samara is and what her father is creeps me out til this day!!!

The Ring remake was one of the better remakes I've seen, but to me they fumbled the climax *badly* with the editing. In the Japanese version we stay in the room with Ryuji and Sadako from the moment she starts climbing out of the well - towards the screen, closer and closer until she's far too close to the screen to be comfortable, and then she's breaking that 4th wall, climbing out of the TV, crawling across the room - it's relentless, and the build-up of tension is incredible. She just keeps coming. The American one inexplicably decides to cut the tension dead in the middle by cutting to Rachel driving for no reason. You don't get that disconcerting moment when Samara's getting progressively *too close* to the screen - instead it goes straight to the bit where she crawls out. The build-up just isn't there, and it ruins what's supposed to be the climax. I will never not be mad about this.

Same. Was heavy into scary movies in my teens til I saw the 2.5 US Ring movies, and promptly never wanted to see scary movies ever again. I can't do horror movies...or games. RE7, Fear, and Layers of Fear, and Ghostwrite. Anything with girls with long black hair, or anything to do with what I've dubbed "melty face," due to these movies.

I watched the original for the first time a couple years back. And I cannot describe the disappointment I felt after. It is so tame compared to the American remake. The US version has some of the most striking visuals of any movie. Where as the original barely feels it's moved when it ends. I think the remake is an expansion in the best way possible. But if you haven't ever seen the original I do recommend seeing it yourself and drawing your own conclusions. I don't want my feelings to color anyone else's experience

The opening was quite memorable and the imagery was perfect. ..and "I saw.. her face.." Best fright in the film.
