The skyline of the Upper City of Bergamo (Italy) and the city's main square is dominated by the imposing civic tower, built in the 12th century. The tower houses three bells, which in this video ring for the city festival dedicated to the patron saint Alexander Martyr.
The minor bell is a G sharp and was cast in 1474 in Vicenza; the second bell has an E as its note and was rebuilt after the Second World War. The major bell is called the Campanone and rings an F sharp grave, the second largest bell in Lombardy after that of the Milan Cathedral. The bell was cast in 1656 in Verona, commissioned by the podestà of the Republic of Venice. The largest bell measures 2.07 metres in diameter and weighs 5580 kg. In addition to striking the hours, the bell rang every evening at ten o'clock, in remembrance of the curfew and the closing of the four city gates.
The old palace of the nobles was built in 1100 by an important family, passing to the municipality in 1600. In 2001, the palace was included in a project of archaeological and stratigraphic studies, which led to the discovery of some elements dating as far back as the 6th century B.C. during the period of barbarian and later Roman rule. In 2012, the Interactive Historical Museum of the Venetian Age was set up, which is divided into seven interactive rooms between 1492 with the discovery of America and the end of Venetian rule.
