The funny thing is the retcon isn’t even needed for the story to turn out the same. When Madara comes back via Edo Tensei he is more than strong enough to beat the 5 Kage without the Rinnegan. Nagato could have been born with the Rinnegan and unlocked it when he was kid, Obito could have stolen it from him after he died, and Madara could have taken it from Obito after he revived himself. Sasuke got his from Hagaromo anyway so it doesn’t have to be an evolution of the Sharingan. The same stuff happens with no unnecessary plot twist about Madara getting the Rinnegan right before death and Obito secretly implanting the Rinnegan into a child with nobody noticing.

Another glaring contradiction is around Madara picking obito as his successor. Obito said that he doesn't have enough chakra to utilize both eyes but Madara's plan was to have someone with his eyes using Rinne tensei on him. But then in the war arc, Madara used black zetus to force Obito to use Rinne tensei. So Obito, CAN use that jutsu with just one eye. Then Madara in his Juubi mode said that he needs both eyes to use the Rinnegan to its full potential. If Obito could just take one eye and summon the gedo statue, as well as use Rinne tensei, what was even the point of planting the eyes on Nagato? The power of the six paths was not instrumental to Madara's plan, only the ten tails and Rinne tensei were.

Ig Kishi didn't know how to properly make Madara overpower the kages without having the hax of jutsu nullification. Madara, to me at least, seems to have been written to be a godlike figure in power creep, and that's why he has all this bs powerset. Like jutsu nullifaction is sort of like Kamui in the sense that's beyond defense. He just basically says no to jutsu, it's like Neo stopping bullets with the palm of his hand. Like not only he is the best at taijutsu, has the strongest susano, but guess what? He also has the powers of the other most powerful shinobi: Hashirama's powers. He just casually uses top tier wood jutsu(which is already mythical on its own), and knows even how to throw the middle finger to the dispelling of the reanimation jutsu. He does all of this without any effort. He's just cool and he is used in vs battle type arguments to destroy every other character. I like Madara as a character. It's fun to see him, but he is also one of the ways the anime became power crept all the way to Boruto. Boruto is almost nearing DBZ.

I remember back in the days people liked to write in fanfics that the Rinnegan was a dojutsu belonging to the Uzumaki clan, even then it was rare. Nagato turning out to be an Uzumaki as people speculated after Kushina’s debut added more fuel to the fire. Good times. Good~ times.

I personally would have liked the Rinnegan being a third Dojutsu better because it would have been the first significant dojutsu we see come outside of the leaf village. As weird as it was that a random unrelated clan had this heavenly dojutsu ability, it would have been even weirder that most of the major jutsu strengths came from the Leaf Village. All the major ninja villages were collecting the tailed beasts as bargaining chips or deterrence between the other villages, but only the leaf village had the strongest one that dwarves the others combined, and they had the clan with the eye jutsu that can control even the strongest one, and they had the clan with the Byakugan that can serve as a nearly perfect detection, and they had this or that and what exactly are the other major villages supposed to have up their sleeves? I wish more clans from other villages had these unique legendary bloodline abilities that only their clan could utilize.

If you are a character in Naruto at some point you have to come to the conclusion that you're in a fictional story and the main characters are all in the Leaf Village. It's the only explanation for the strongest Ninja of all time all coming from there, every broken ability including Edo Tensei coming from there and two Genin from that village both getting god powers from the Sage of Six Paths and saving the entire planet before the age of 17.

Sand the only one with puppet & magnet style they also have speciality in poison, cloud has lot of legacies from sage of six path (weapons and place to control tail beast), mist literally have 7 swords with unique ability & if Im not mistaken lot of great bloodlines that's why obito eliminated them, don't forget rock also have coalition bomb squad (like deidara & gari) & kekkei tota only possess by their ninja. That to be said others village also have lot of strong abilities in their arsenal

I agree. I think it would've been cooler if Nagato also wasn't an Uzumaki, as that shrinks the universe a bit more, too. It also would've shaken things up a bit if one of the smaller villages, (Grass, Rain, etc), also had some absurdly powerful abilities that allowed them to keep their independence from the Big 5. If you think about it, the Cloud, Sand, Mist, Stone, or Leaf could just waltz up on any smaller village and just absorb them if they wanted. Greater power difference and dynamics for smaller places would've been neat.

I hated it that Rinnegan turned out to be just another evolution of Sharingan. Always liked the idea of it being a separate dojutsu but not even like Kekkei Genkai, but more like a one-in-a-million random mutation or a divine blessing. Wouldn't it be cool if Naruto wasn't this destined hero but instead an underdog? Working hard till he beats the supposed chosen one - Pain?

We all know Hiruzen did not give this boy the royal treatment. Does anyone like or respect him for being the son of a hokage? No. Did he gain any genetic benefits from his father? As far as we know, Minato is not from any notable clan, just a dude with pure skill. So the answer is no. Did he receive any training or access to any of his father's skills/techniques? Well that coffin over there and Naruto's lack of a flying raijin will answer that question for you. And no, the rasengan does not count because, while Minato did invent it, Jiraiya was the one who taught it to Naruto without being instructed by Minato in the past to do so at any point. I will accept a lot of reasons for why Naruto is not an underdog, especially after the War Arc. But that is the one take I will never accept.

Back then I thought Naruto would awaken the rinnegan. Sasuke already had the op sharingan and the tailed beast equivalent Susanoo that came with it. Naruto having the (at the time possibly) Uzumaki counterpart would have been a mirror for the two.

It even makes sense design-wise, it look like the Uzumaki Seal, which in turn looks like Hagoromo's "Third Eye". It could have been expanded that the Uzumaki were not destroyed because of their sealing techniques, but because a Phrophecy was made that the "Second coming of the Sage of Six Paths would soon arise, born of the Uzumaki", the only one the Tailed Beasts would obey willingly. It would have also explained why Naruto was such a monster in the ammount of charka he wielded and why the Nine Tails would lend him it's aid from time to time. It would also explain why Minato would use such a risky seal, with it weakenning over time, on the Nine Tails. Finally, it would also explain why Hiruzen did such a poor job of looking after Naruto, he was keeping him under a low profile. Can't have the same ones that destroyed the Uzumaki find out that Konoha has the very eason they did so. God, I would develop this further and make a fanfic. Edit: Maybe even a fan-manga?

yes i agree! that would have been much better, both him and nagato were uzumaki and that would give the clan a more substantial relationship with the sage of six path and meaning in the whole story. Like, the senju and uchiha were the two clans that descended from the sage and then there is naruto a random uzumaki in the middle of the prophecy - it always felt a bit random to me. Moreover, the whole nagato and naruto paralells of what he could have become etc would have gained much more impact.

I personally hate how much the Byakugan got shafted especially when it was hyped up to basically be the Sharingan’s equal in many ways and even superior in terms of visual prowess. Same thing goes with Gentle Fist vs Strong Fist in terms of Taijutsu. Basically the Hyuga got done extremely dirty and they should have been at the very least in a similar category to that of the Uchiha in terms of power and importance

Hyuga clan’s technique is basically an eastern martial arts implemented to the world of anime. Kishimoto finds building a technique that revolves around that is pretty hard and tiring, looking at how everybody wants more flashy character like naruto and sasuke gets powerup.

Honestly... yeah. If Nagato was a distant relative or last surviving member of Kimimaro's clan, it would actually been better for the story. We only ever really get the information that Nagato was supposed to be an Uzumaki from outside sources and it doesn't ever become relevant at all. Idk, maybe you could even have the Uzumaki, Senju and Kaguya all be branch clans from each other or something. If you're gonna make everyone that matters in the story somehow be a descendant of the Otsutsuki at least have more than 2 families matter in however many centuries it took.

Considering the method of awakening the Rinnegan (combining the Chakra of the Indra and Ashura Transmigrants to recreate Hagoromo's Chakra), it's still a once-in-a-generation occurrence, maybe even rarer. Nothing really changed.

@@rossadams3999 The hagoromos chakra was later, the legend was basically that christ would be birthed sort of thing. The rinnegan had impact before aliens were introduced, and explaining the magic behind things wrong like "LOK" did results in a terrible ending. Nagato "awakened" his eyes during a time of war, prompting the legend told by pervy sage to match the legend of things like jesus. Also the sharingan no matter how many forms it gets, is still weaker than the byakugan just by kakashi's word. The byakugan can disable chakra points or overload them prompting death(yes chakra is linked to life), and the ten-seigan is even worse of a writing mistake than the rinnegan's second backstory.

That’s what I figured. The Rinnegan grants the user access to utilising all nature transformation and create any ninjutsu. Nagato used this ability to create his own unique techniques in the form of the six paths. But I guess this is just the power of imagination. Kishimoto probably didn’t plan this but I am fine with that. It’s all part of the art at the end of the day.

Kabuto's hypothesis was outright debunked by Hagoromo and Black Zetsu. Hagoromo stated that the Rinnegan is the result of combining Indra's and Asura's chakra, no Sharingan required. Black Zetsu approached both Indra's and Asura's reincarnations over the years to awaken the Rinnegan. The Sharingan and Rinnegan are separate dojutsu that come from the Rinne-Sharingan

@@Sir_GrimReaper Explain how switching between dojutsus mean that one is the evolution of the other. They are separate, the Rinnegan doesn't have the abilities of the Sharingan. This is seen when one of Madara's Wood Clones used his EMS to put A into a genjutsu. The only exceptions are Susanoo and Sasuke's tomoe-Rinnegan. Susanoo doesn't require the Sharingan to be active to use. This was demonstrated in its very debut where Itachi was blind. Also, Madara used it without eyes at all. Sasuke's tomoe-Rinnegsn csn be considered as the use of the Sharingan and Rinnegan at the same time. This was made explicitly clear when Sasuke's Rinnegan had no tomoe until he was able to use his EMS again.

Hagoromo was talking about his version of the Rinnegan, he wasn't talking about awakening/attaining the rinnegan dojutsu normally. By normally, I mean for example how there are Otsutsuki who have the rinnegan i.e. the dojutsu but their own version of it Combining Indra and Ashura's chakra together gives you Hagoromo's chakra which awakens Hagoromo's rinnegan. Black Zetsu approached Indra and Ashura's reincarnates to awaken Hagoromo's rinnegan

I believe that if Ashura's reincarnation infuses Indra's reincarnation chakra they awaken a rikudou senjutsu instead of the rinnegan, hagoromo, as shown in chapter 690, he possessed rikudou senjutsu even without being the juubi's jinchuuriki, that is, he inherited this power naturally from the Juubi, it has already been stated that Indra inherited Hagoromo's mental power (so it makes sense that his reincarnations awaken Rinnegan by infusing Ashura's chakra), as for Ashura's reincarnations, what about the physical energy that they inherited.

Hey Dygo, I might be wrong because I haven't watched or read naruto in years, and my most recent memory of the story is the Storm series But to the point, in one of your videos, you said that Sasuke didn't get his Rinnegan trough normal methods and if he were to get an Hashirama cells arm he would awaken another one But my interpretation of that moment where Sasuke and Naruto meet Hagoromo in that "spiritual realm" it's not that he gave their new powers, it's more like: they achieved the conditions for the power ups naturally, and that triggered Hagoromo appearing Take Naruto: The condintion to awaken Six Paths is the chakra of the Ten Tails (wich is formed by the other 9 Tailed Beasts) and Naruto got the chakra of the Two up to the Seven tail in their fight against the reanimated Jinchuriki When Obito and Kakashi fought agains Juubidara to buy time, Obito manages to extract some fractions of the One and Eight tails, and put it on Naruto, that combined with Minato's half of Kurama, makes 9 Tailed Beasts inside Naruto and awakens the Six paths mode For Sasuke is even more simple: The condtions for the Rinnegan is being a Reincarnation of Indra with a Mangekyo, and getting the chakra of a Reincarnation of Asura on top of that When Sasuke "died" Kabuto was healing him with Hashirama cells... you know, the thing that awakened Madara's Rinnegan

I don't think it's fair to say the Rinnegan is an evolution of the Sharingan. It really isn't - what it is is a parallel descendant of the Rinne Sharingan. It was necessary to unlock Hagoromo's chakra to gain it, as Madara found out, but he could still shift between his EMS and Rinnegan and there was no overlap between the powers of the two. Madara just happened to have both Dojutsu in the same eyes, which was never said to be impossible.

Tbh, when the show first came out and I figured out the story, I was disappointed. Apparently, Naruto's dead father was some one-of-a-kind demigod that no one could equal and the rest of the shinobi were basically blind children compared to that dead 20-something. Then the Shippuden retcons happened and the new importance of the founders of the village (Hashirama and Madara) became known. After that I became much more interested in diving back into the story and seeing how the secrets of these larger-than-life mythical figures would be revealed to help bring forth their successors in a much more believable way. The initial legend of the Rinnegan was that the God's Eye appeared from time to time, in eras of extreme violence and conflict, Nagato was just another individual with this power. I personally loved this explanation, it gave a greater air of mystery to the Naruto universe, the stories that could be explored or with it were immense, at least for me, what made me watch Part 1 of Naruto was the mysterious world, people with mysterious and unique powers, with their own stories. The Rinnegan simply added a new mystery and legend, completely apart from Konoha, it was what the series needed at that time, and in my opinion it made the mystery of Pain even better. I feel like the more the Naruto series progressed, the more the mysteries were simply thrown together into one piece, and everything became Uchiha and Senju, centered around just over 4 or 5 important characters.

Rinnegan is completely different than the Mangekyou Sharingan, but the Mangekyou Sharingan is completely different than the Sharingan. Rinnegan gives you a new set of abilities + a potential unique ability just like the Mangekyou does. That doesnt mean it was planned from the beginning, but to say it works completely different than the Sharingan just isnt true. The only reason it feels so different is because with the Mangekyou we were directly told "this is a Sharingan thing" and with the Rinnegan it was left up in the air.

Things that happen "off screen" can't be retconned if they are explained in lore. Now Had it happened on screen then changed you'd be right. An example of a real redcon in Naruto Is the Taju Kagebunshin No-Jutsu in terms of Kakashi being able to make only half a dozen, because of the chakra restrictions, as he previously in the manga had produced a lot more... this was a change to an existing fact that wasn't explained or explainable in lore. Madara was never confirmed dead in the Manga, missing, presumed dead as by explanation makes Hashirama an unreliable narrator, he might even have been influenced by a genjutsu to make the wrong conclusion. But it's not a redcon. Kakashi's Clone Capacity though is.

Is it an evolution? To my understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the Rinnegan is tied to Hagoromo and, since Hagoromo getting the Sharingan was filler, the first Sharingan user was Indra. So, even after the "retcon" getting the Rinnegan from only a Sharingan it's impossible since you need Asura's chakra as well. Edit: to clarify, I'm talking about the Rinnegan as "an Uchiha thing", since, by the explanation, it's clearly not, you just need chakra from Indra an Asura. Honestly I would have prefered if the Rinnegan was some random power that someone happened to be born with, and this person would be destined to do great things. We already have Naruto and Sasuke being reincarnations of people old people purely out of luck, why not have the Rinnegan be like it aswell. I hate how Shippuden handled these things. Like in early parts of Naruto, there were mad debates on whether the Sharingan was better than the Byakugon. I think they should have introduced Sage Mode (Make this a Dojutsu by the way) from the JUMP. We could have had a 3 way battle and then had a combination of all 3 making the Rinnegan. I.E. The 3 most OP Dojutsu combined gave you the Rinnegan. That would have made feel that much more like a GOD. In Naruto Shippuden, Pain felt more like a powerful character than the GOD he was supposed to be portrayed as. Then you'd make all smaller Dojutsu from those 3 with each Dojutsu being stronger or weaker based on the user. The story should have had Naruto, Sasuke and Neji vs Madara at the end and the power of friendship or team work winning.

so, for me I believe the Rinnegan was more of like the Mongekyou in evolution just more on the extreme. for instance, with MS/EMS you got base abilities that every Uchiha can use like Susanoo while also getting abilities that vary off the person like Obito having warp or Itachi having Amaterasu. the Rinnegan probably had base abilities like Chibaku Tensei or pull/push while things like Sasuke ability to teleport to his weapon or Madaras limbo was varied a pun the person.

I think it's wrong to say that the Rinnegan is the Mangekyou Sharingan's natural evolution. One could rather say that the Mangekyou Sharingan is the Rinnegan's devolution as the Rinnegan came before the Mangekyou Sharingan. With the splitting of Hagoromo's power among his sons, the natural occular prowess devolves into the Mangekyou Sharingan which can only become a Rinnegan again if physical and occular powers of the Ootstsuki (Hagoromo) are combined again. That's why all the Ootsutsuki characters we see do not have a Mangekyou Sharingan but rather a Rinnegan and the Byakugan. These are therefore the unchanged base Doujutsus that come directly from the Ootsutsuki. The only instance when we see a full-blooded Ootsutsuki with a Sharingan is during the filler episodes about Hagoromo's life.

TBH I don't see why theres such problem with Rinnegan powers being so different because the very same happens when you go from base Sharingan to MS. First you have a dojutsu that helps you predict your enemy movements, see chakra and cast a genjutsu, then out of nowhere you get a ton of individual abilities like teleporting to another dimension, invoking hellfire, summoning a giant humanoid dude that can shoot arrows or use a giant sword. I think it just shows how otherworldly the Rinnegan is plus its not just a mere evolution of the Sharingan because one must also have the powers of the Senju in order to awaken it.

I think the best way to look at the Rinnegan is that it isn't an evolution of the Sharingan, the Sharingan is a simplified de-evolution of the Rinnegan. Hagoromo had the original as a half Ootsutsuki, and each subsequent generation was further from the origin point, and so it needed both Senju and Uchiha dna as well as the chakra of the reincarnates to awaken because it's only achieved by reverse engineering the eyes of the Sage of Six Paths. Its like how Hashirama's Mokuton isn't a new combination of Earth and Water release, it's also a throwback to his Ootsutsuki ancestry and the fact Kaguya absorbed power from the God Tree which was passed down to Hagoromo through both inheritance and from becoming the jinchuuriki for the Juubi.

The rinnegan was always weird. Think about it, at the start of the series the sharingan and byakugan basically just did things related to sight, like see farther or track movements. Then rinnegan is... turn your arm into a robotic chakra beam/control gravity? Eventually, the same thing happened to the sharingan, but it is still strange that dojutsu abilities - despite translating to 'eye techniques' - stopped having anything to do with the eyes themselves.

Well technically the sharingan and Rinnegan are separate dojustu. The Rinnegan is the evolution of the sharingan only in the children of Hagaromo. Kaguya and Madara’s 3rd eye is a sharingan with Rinnegan ripples showcasing in that instance Rinnegan isn't the evolution. Sasuke's is the opposite being a Rinnegan with tome.

Yeah, having it be a third doujutusu is just a lot better and more satisfying for me than what they eventually ended up going with. I'm pretty sure that when it was first introduced by nane, the reference there as one of the three legendary doujutusu implying that it was a separate ability. And honestly, having Sasuke or Madara end up possessing it, isn't necessarily a bad thing. They could have ended up each getting one of Nagato's eyes or something. And maybe if a rinnegan gets transplanted into an Uchiha, it could gain the tomoe and some additional abilities and qualities that are fusion of its core abilities as well the abilities that individual would have possessed based on how evolved their sharingan was. And then ofc, eternal tsyukiyomi could be a unique fusion ability that Madara awakened and Sasuke could still have his teleportation thing. As for Kaguya and beyond, idk. Would definitely have to sit and think of a way to reconcile that. But Hagoromo could pretty much maintain the same role and abilities he had before, but he could end up having a third son who would carry the rinnegan genes and maybe be the progenitor of the Uzumaki clan. That could sort of tie in their insanely powerful natural physiology and chakra reserves, both of which are necessary to weild the rinnegan. This would also be a really good motivation for the clan getting pretty much entirely eradicated. The sealing jutsu prowess is one thing, but having them also able to potentially produce an individual that could awaken the rinnegan would make them a world-class threat, especially if that individual decided not to use it for good. And the awakening condition could be something exceptionally difficult to meet or could even become increasingly more likely as the overall population of Uzumaki dwindled. So the extermination led to Nagato gaining it in the first place.

The swirly Sharingan from Indra just feels like those medieval drawings that exaggerate details when talking about the past (and when we saw it in the fillers we were 'there':present so we could see that it was indeed a normal Sharingan), It doesnt feel like a retcon in my opinion and him having the same pattern as Sasuke could be on purpose to signify that they/he is the last reencarnation, the one that ends it all. But hey, each person interprets it as they want.

My headcanon as to why no one else used the Rinnegan at its full potential is because Nagato was a descendant of the Uzumami clan and thus had vast reserves of chackra that allowed him to fully use more rinnegan abilities

i don’t mind that it's part of the sharingan cycle. but i do like the way you have to achieve it. combining both indra and ashura chakra. since yk they're all descendents of hagoromo

That the design was not yet entirely set in stone for one panel does not prove it was not a dōjutsu. For a few panels during the Kazekage Retrieval mission, Kishimoto also misdraws Pain's eye with tomoe, suggesting even from the start of Part II there would be a link with the Sharingan. The designs being changed slightly does not exactly make it retroactive continuity in the common vernacular sense. Kakuzu used to be taller than Kisame, but I would not say his character was entirely changed because of this design quirk. Jump did not force Kaguya. She was already planned out when Hagoromo was introduced in the Pain arc as the one who would be sealed into the Moon. That everyone thought the Rinnegan was unrelated just because of unfounded assumptions does not mean there was retroactive continuity, everyone was just wrong for not looking into it enough. It was still always planned from the onset given Pain's role as Madara's vessel. The Rinnegan is not going to be similar to the Sharingan because it is formed from the exact opposite to the Sharingan, the complimentary Yang chakra of Asura to Indra's Yin (which forms the Sharingan). It is gaining a portion of Hagoromo's god-like powers, in a way, so of course it would be greatly varied and not just locked into Sharingan-like abilities. That is agiven. Hints were left, such as purple being a combination of red and blue, which can be seen as two complementary forces coming together, or that Kakashi mused that both the Byakugan and the Sharingan share a linked origin when Neji fought Hinata, and thus the third of the three great eyes also would share a link. The Rinnegan also does share some similar abilities such as chakra sensing or enhanced learning (the Sharingan can copy ninjutsu, whilst the Rinnegan allows the user to easily learn all five natures). Obito and Madara use half of the Rinnegan abilities, including Gedō, Gakidō, Tendō, and so on, and Kakashi points out that Obito would be wasting his chakra to use the rest.

Honestly i dont see the rinnegan related to the sharingan as a retcon, no uchiha can have it at all, u have a 1 to 7 billion chance of having a chance to aquire it, madara was just so broken he accidentally got it. He didn't even really know it was possible and it took years to aquire . Its technically its own thing , its not supposed to be gotten unless youre an otsutsuki , thats why indra or asura got it after being traumatized once

The rinnegan was never changed to being a sharingan evolurion. Sharingan came from rinnegan and is still that way according to the verse. Though the anime producers tried to say that

This video made me think... Is it weird that Nagato spent a lot of time (I can't remember if months or years) with Jiraya to be trained with and... he never exibited any Rinnegan specific ability ? Because of course Jiraya didn't know any of the Six Path's abilities so it implies Nagato never discovered those abilities as a child...I mean as far as we can tell, Nagato didn't even discovered those abilities before Yahito's death and soon he had access to them... it's a weird stuff if you think fromt he Nagato's life pov, not an issue from the Naruto's plot with Nagato as side character

A somewhat of a sidenote, but my headcanon for the Asura path being as strange as it is (as far as I know only Pain has ever used asura path abilities) those are his "unique" rinnegan abilities. Perhaps sorta like how mangekyo abilities are meant to be symbolic in a sense for the character's motivations, maybe when you have the rinnegan it taps into creation of all things and manifests the unique rinnegan ability based off what the character wants. I know Pain never awakened a rinnegan, just had it transplanted, but the Asura path does fit in aesthetically with the Rain village as a whole so perhaps the Asura path is sort of a living embodiment of the technology of the Rain village. Obviously all this was retconned as you stated in the video but that is how I would try to rationalize it.

It's still Madara's rinnegan, so it wouldn't have another unique ability for Nagato.

Rinnegan doesn't have a specific ability unique to a user like the MS at least from what is shown as Sasuke used the same abilities as Obito, Madara and Nagato despite being a new Rinnegan and not shared like it was for those three.
