THE RIO CAQUETA

Jules Domine and Tyler Bradt, obsessed and addicted to whitewater adventure, make a plan to journey the long way, from the source of Rio Caqueta 1,000 Kilometers downstream to an unreal big water canyon deep in the Colombian Amazon.
This is the type of adventure that makes you wish you were NOT there.

Believe it or not, that military outpost used to have an American contingent. I did two TDY's in the mid 90's, 4 months at Araracuara and 5 months in Leticia!

It's sad that Colombia gets such a bad rep. Yes, the country has endured long and painful years with Cocaine cartels, FARC, kidnappings and general violence. But I travelled there for a short 4 weeks many many years ago (about 26 years ago, yikes)! I discovered a country so beautiful it makes you want to cry tears of joy. I also discovered the majority of people are among the warmest, friendliest and honest human beings on the planet. I remember a story where a hostel owner in Santa Marta drove all the way to the airport to find a traveler who forgot his toothbrush at his hostel - to return it to him! Yes, I also had a few bad experiences with corrupt police and whatnot, but I believe things have drastically improved since then. This is a must-visit country - for anyone who can manage it. I dream of one day going back and now I HAVE to get to Caqueta and the Araracuara canyon! Probably never happen but one can dream no?
