Byju's, once a beacon of innovation in the educational technology sector, experienced a meteoric rise to become the world's most valuable edtech startup, reaching a staggering valuation of $22 billion. Founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran, the company revolutionized learning with interactive videos and real-life examples, making complex concepts accessible and engaging for students from kindergarten to class 12¹.
The app's ascent was fueled by a blend of cutting-edge technology, strategic acquisitions, and high-profile endorsements, positioning Byju's as a pioneer in the edtech space. However, the company's rapid expansion and aggressive marketing strategies during the Covid-19 pandemic led to unsustainable growth and financial strain¹.
The fall of Byju's was marked by a series of challenges, including cash-flow problems, allegations of a toxic work culture, and financial mismanagement. The company faced significant layoffs, a 75% cut in valuation by tech investor Prosus, and disputes with creditors over a $1.2 billion loan¹². These issues underscored the volatility of the edtech market and the risks associated with rapid scaling without a solid financial foundation².

There is a space for organised education which is not freely available on the internet. Byju tried to crack that. But by overdoing it they collapsed.
