Using supposed “AI” models to lend money to companies that can’t proof future earnings is the most stupid idea since selling mortgage backed securities. Taleb was right we should force bankers to pay back bonuses when they make stupid investment.

In seconds, an AI can train on decades of historical data, identifying features that indicate higher default risk Is it perfect? No. There’s no way to “prove future earnings” beyond the risk-free rate. Anything can happen. But default risk/probabilities are quantitative problems. Someone’s “gut feeling” isn’t gonna do better than a deep learning ensemble of neural networks. A DNN could train on gigabytes of data faster than I could multiply two large numbers. Human brains are just inferior when it comes to this kind of stuff

It's good that CS is pivoting towards wealth management, particularly in Asia. Currently it has the most robust AML/KYC standards in the Asian financial hubs of SG and HK which puts itself in a good position to expand its PWM business at a sustainable rate for the long term. I can see the Credit Suisse becoming more and more Asian oriented as China continues to mint a new class of Billionaires and ultra high net worth individuals.

@David Macaulay Capital controls are easily circumvented through a variety of means by UHNW individuals. Most of these individuals have revenue generating businesses outside of China. Furthermore, China has also approving record capital outflows due to increased upwards pressure on their currency.

@Davos-st8ok2 жыл бұрын
@@RacingS2000 Not sure where I suggested that banks assist their clients to BREACH capital control laws. Do brush up on your comprehension skills. HNW Chinese citizens often bypass the capital outflow restriction through the Hong China-Kong corridor where foreign banks have set up shop to service mainland clients. These banks have also set up onshore presence in China which opens up more opportunities for their HNW clients to access offshore banking facilities. That has nothing to do with BREACHING THE LAW. You think UBS has $1 tn yuan under management by helping Chinese citizens breach the law and still has their branch up and running in China without facing the wrath of Chinese officials? Your ignorance notwithstanding, your accusation makes no sense whatsoever. The AEI regime is enforced by the bank. You're painting a picture where banks help clients breach capital control laws and then report them to their own countries? You must be stupid.

It seems that the bank's market cap is a better indicator of the real equity of the bank than any actual figure stated on its balance sheet, then if so, and given the amount of the bank's assets, then the equity to assets ratio is tissue paper thin and the bank, on its own merits standing alone as currently configured, doesn't seem like a safe place to deposit money; as such, the bank's real equity ---- as a customer might view it ---- is the unspoken belief that the home team Swiss gov't would not tolerate one of its gigantic banks to default. Seems like most big western European banks fit this pigeon hole. Flippantly modeled as: A) infinite balance sheets B) zero equity C). home gov't promise to ride to the rescue.
@tomlxyz2 жыл бұрын
Market cap is no indicator of equity. It's an indicator of the relationship between the profit margin and the equity as well as the profitability of other services they provide. A bank that is twice as profitable with the same equity is worth more. A bank that has massive equity but only charges managing fees would have little market cap despite posing zero risk for the economy
