Someone once said (possibly Eddie Jordan) upon Mark Webber's retirement - 'He gave up the sport before the sport gave him up'. If you where someone who came from Drive to Survive it absolutely is gut wrenching and I know a lot of fans who it hurt a lot. Still think RB handled his goodbye really really badly knowing his popularity, which is one of the reasons they "saved" him from Macca in the first place. But if you're a long time fan of the sport, it's sad but unfortunately the norm that these things happen. It's only 20 seats for all drivers in the world...just to get to F1 the norm is that you had to have had some success (if not a LOT of it) when you're going up the ladder so for every story of a kid who left it all to chase his dream and succeed, you have many others where the ending is not nearly as triumphant. Rarer are cases where a combination of a least a massive amount of luck as well as a massive amount of money get you a seat, but they have always been there ,regardless of the era, and the villain du jour. What still sets DR appart is his charisma, his attitude and how comfortable he feels being that extroverted persona. He had the right attitude for the social media era and he absolutely exploited it, especially in a sport where other drivers don't have that personality or can find that groove that allows them to be media friendly while still being "themselves". At least DR got a shot in a few good teams, he got 8 wins and a lot of iconic moments, as well as being paid very handsomely for his troubles. IF RB had maintained it's dominant form for another year, or IF the Renault engine hadn't been crap, he might have done more. But F1 is littered with drivers who "might have done more" if luck had been different. Still, it is a person, and even if you think he was overhyped, it still sucks for him, and I can empathize with that.

To be fair Dany's goodbye is merely bitter-sweet. The send-off was mishandled as said but I still remember the pain of Suzuka 2001, having to watch my two favourite drivers at the time retire with Hakkinen and Alési (still favorite of all times for Jean). Especially when his race ended in a crash with Kimi. Unlike Ricciardo Alési nearly systematically was faster than his teammate (exception made of Prost), including in his last year. What do you mean when you say McLaren weren't giving him the time of day? McLaren engineers spent hundreds of hours with Danny at the factory, trying to figure out why he wasn't jiving with the car. They literally gave Lando the "hold position" order at Monza. It was NOT McLarens fault that Danny Ric can not adapt to different cars. Everyone else seemed to adapt. Charles, Max, Lando, Carlos, George, Lewis (even though he took a bit to get used to the new package, he still got it.) They all adapted their driving style to fit the cars, and he couldn't. Maybe Danny was just a bit overrated. I can't believe you just had me defending McLaren, of ALL teams..... I've been a Ferrari fan since 1982, and you've just made me defend McLaren!

He was tyre saving, evident by his fastest lap on final lap. Be quiet if you don't know things. Talking about adaptability, only Carlos from that list of people you said ever drove in completely different type of cars. Max nor Lando nor Charle have changed teams since their first move and haven't had to adapt to anything. Neither has Lewis. Carlos went through renault oversteer and Mclaren understeer, and was fine. Why are we acting like his career was a tragedy? The guy is in a very low percentage of drivers with the amount of wins he had. He took a daring move to another team, that should be applauded, I wish drivers took more risk. The same that Lewis did from McLaren to Merc. A real tragedy is someone like Nico Hulkenberg. Clear raw pace and reliability. Yet his best finish is 4th. Not even a podium to his name.

Lewis wasn't taking a risk moving from Mclaren to Mercedes lmao He got approached in private by Niki Lauda and was given a firsthand look at their upcoming power unit for the turbo hybrid era. Lewis knew exactly what he was getting into. It wasn't much of a risk at all. Nowhere near compared to the blind faith jumps that other drivers have made.

@ All the money was on Red Bull to continue their dominance. How many drivers have been poached on the promise of success and opportunity? Senna to Williams, Alonso to Ferrari, Montoya to McLaren etc.. You’re telling me that jumping from a championship contending team to a team that hadn’t won a constructors since 1955 wasn’t a risk? That is just pure hate towards Lewis. Almost every major media outlet questioned the move. There was absolutely no telling that they were gonna go on the run that they did.

@@kickdawson Kinda low to pick out a dead man as the "not be a success", dontcha think? Especially when you consider that the revised B spec of the Williams was by and large the fastest car. Alonso to Ferrari wasn't a risk at all lmao He was leaving Renault who were drowning and getting ready to sell off to Lotus. Montoya wasn't taking a risk either. Frank Williams was fed up with him. None of your examples make any sense at all. And the news outlets questioning Lewis's decision is just media gossip and COMPLETELY irrelevant to what I said. They didn't have insider info. It is not hard to understand that when Niki Lauda approaches you saying "hey, we have been focusing on the upcoming regs and working on a monster power unit for the past several years", that it is no longer a "big risk" and instead a calculated decision to move. Mclaren was floundering. Mercedes were on the up and clearly playing the long game. It wasn't that much of a risk. It was only a risk from the outside perspective lmao Lewis clearly understands when to move. He is not taking any risks in the teams he is choosing to sign with. To suggest that is kind of an insult to him.

We have seen many characters in the paddock (queue the OG Kimi) but besides being a brilliant driver, Daniel is relatable as a person like one of the lads and that’s a quality we were privileged enough to witness

Josh, I have to say, despite hating Helmut as well, that Red Bull is not the only option and a good driver will find their way. The RB junior program is big but not the only pathway to ultra fast cars 🤓

Thank you for an amazing tribute to the all time fave! No matter what others say, I still consider him the best driver of his generation (Bottas, Perez, Hulkenberg), and he's still the only one to consistently beat Max. His absence feels even worse because he got replaced by Lawson, who might be fast and deserve a shot, but makes Helmut Marko look like the nicest guy to ever grace F1 paddock.
