We recently had news of a brand new Doctor Who behind-the-scenes spinoff named "Doctor Who Unleashed", which will debut alongside the 60th anniversary specials. This got me thinking of Doctor Who's older behind the scenes show "Doctor Who Confidential", so in this video let's take a look at the show's rise and fall, along with why something like this is so essentially to the show.

The Confidential for The Girl Who Waited is also the one I immediately remember, when thinking about padding. They also interviewed the lunch lady about everyones favourite food in another episode iirc. As much as I enjoyed Matt, Karen and Arthur interact with each other, the episodes should have been 10-20 minutes shorter most of the time. 30 minutes for Unleashed seems like a good fit and according to what we've seen so far, the chemistry between Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will be just as delightful to watch.

When I was growing up I would watch Doctor Who with my mum because she loved Sci-Fi wheres as my dad hated it and much prefered non fiction TV. He never watched Doctor Who but never missed an episode of Doctor Who Confidential

I have a memory of Bad Day by Daniel Powter playing in a confidential episode, over 9's regeneration. But I'm convinced it's an invented memory because I can't for the life of me find it.

@@DigiRangerScottI have no clue unfortunately. It's genuinely my first memory of that regeneration though. I ran out crying when 9 regenerated because I was 4 lmao.

Same here! Also Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars over the Confidential episode for Gridlock (I swear I remember that song being used anyway). Pretty sure they used Take That - Never Forget for End of Time part 2's Confidential too.

The blurays and new DVDs use edited confidentials, only the original DVD releases of series 1 have the full confidentials the other seasons have edited ones, the full ones are most likely the ones coming to iPlayer but if not, they are also on KZbin and the rest on dailymotion

Often, the recording studios or musicians only grant use for the televised airing of a show. Either the period of time for use can sometimes expire or the medium for use can be restricted. Or it could be the Mandela Effect. Just some thoughts.

I've always been of the mindset that learning how to do the trick doesn't ruin the magic for me. I know it's not 'magic' it's talent and skill. Knowing how it was done gives me a better appreciation for the talent and craft. I think that is exactly the same with media and behind-the-scenes content!

I feel like Confidential definitely sparked my love of the creative industries. Never noticed it at the time but nearly 2 decades later I'm now working in the games industry and it's become so much more apparent to me that this is where my love for the behind-the-scenes of creative media came from. I'm ecstatic at the news of it returning in some form!

I was terrified of the RTD Cybermen, even the poster I got from Doctor Who Adventures magazine struck fear into me It was only seeing actors enter/exit their costumes on Confidential that helped me through it😫

We never got Confidential in the states, at least not until the DVDs came out. When I found out about it I had to look online to see if anyone posted them to see how they made the show. I like watching the behind the scenes stuff after I've seen the show because I find it fascinating how they pull off certain illusions. Of course now it's mostly "we did it with computers" which is interesting artistically but not as cool as when they use practical effects.

I remember the confidential episode from the SIlurian 2 parter that showed what foley artists do and I have always found that profession to be really clever and creative so it was really interesting to see how they work

One of my favourite episodes of Confidential was the last episode of the Davies era: The End of Time Part Two. From how they bring back the Time Lords for NuWho to how they filmed the regeneration and how carefully they planned the post-regeneration scene to David's Golden rap to the clip montage of the Tenth Doctor's era accompanied by the Take That song: Never Forget, which is such a fitting song to end on and I always think of for a finale of anything.

I remember torrenting every episode of Confidential as they came out because of the fact that they never aired on US TV, and I really loved seeing all the behind the scenes work on the show. A huge reason for my interest in those sorts of behind the scenes features was entirely due to getting the Extended Editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. The amount of behind the scenes content and footage included with them was so impressively in depth and it was what got me interested in learning about how films and shows got made. It made me so sad when DW Confidential shifted away from the Production aspects in the later seasons and then eventually stopped being made. I feel like my interest in the show started waning partially because of the fact that I no longer had access to learning about the cool ways they filmed and produced the show.

I think an important part of the 2005-2010 era was also that it was kind of the beginning of creators and celebrities parasocialising with their fans (or the other way around) in this kind of way. Namely in the form of video podcasts and the like; which this always felt like. It’s the earliest example I can remember of cast and crew members joking around and chatting to the audience besides blooper reels. My strongest memory of Confidential is of David Tennant basically vlogging in the Shakespeare Code episode!

I’m sure you already know, but in Aus we had ‘Whovians’ as a talk-show style post-DW ep program to watch, but wasn’t about much BTS, mainly just comedians who love the show able to geek out about their favourite show together with an audience who also love it :) I wonder if this new Unleashed will be similar ?

Don't downplay dvds. With everything on streaming now extras like this are non-existent. For the most part they are disappearing from dvds too and only on Blurays; which sucks. But home media is the only place to see this stuff.

Doctor Who scared me when it first came back, so I'd listen in the other room, popping my head round the door when I thought it was safe. But afterwards I'd rush to join the rest of my family on the sofa to watch Doctor Who Confidential and while I claimed to hate Doctor Who, I LOVED Confidential. It was an avenue where I could engage with the series through my facination with production, untill I could handle the real show.

You didn't mention anything about the 'full length' versions of Confidential vs the 'cut down' versions. On the DVD Boxsets they only have the Confidential cut downs. Bit disappointing to be honest.

You say it's locked behind DVDs and Blu-Rays, but honestly those barely cover this either. It's why I hope the Collection sets one day come to NuWho, and give us extras as good as the Classic sets.
