As someone who's currently doing an eduTech Seminar at uni, this video seems scarily fitting. You do make some good points on digital caution. :)

I finished highschool a little less than a decade before EduTech took off, but got some early experience with it in teaching for a brief period of time using things like Scratch later on. It always felt neat but probably not effective for every kind of student, which I think is a bigger problem than just EduTech by itself (catering to a generic majority and leaving any kids that won't adapt behind). By the time the pandemic started I was long gone working elsewhere but it is shocking how many accounts they need now, more and more data gathering all around.

As they saw school results radically declining in Finland, they have now started negotiating about banning smart devices altogether. And I think that is a good thing. Smartphones are too much of a distraction nowadays

I can confi... no, yes? Well, it's complicated. Finnish education in general has been at a rapid decline and nowadays they don't teach you anything. Most of it is left wing politics without any room for discussion, often bashing the opposition or framing them as dumb in a condescending way. There has been an uprise of incompetent teachers, most commonly racist or highly politically biased ones. Teachers threaten constantly to take the phones away, but never do. It's a huge mess and mishmash. I hope they ban TikTok and Snapchat, because those are the main brain rot culprits. Kids'll always be "just sending snaps" or assaulting the class' ears with tiktok ear cancer.

The decline of edtech has not been subtle. Most programs have been getting worse for years, with additional data harvesting, advertising, surveillance, and over commercialization. Quizlet is a perfect example of this. The website first had no ads, then non-intrusive sidebar ads, then ads during activities, then video ads and ad breaks between studying and paywalled content. They have become more rabid in advertising Quizlet Plus while the service as a while has been completely destroyed. The paywalled or got rid of the features that made the service worthwhile, like tests and Gravity.

Never knew EdTechwas was this relevant in first world countries. At least in schools. We're still relying in old reliable paper for the most part. Only in Uni it gets more relevant ( if not totally necessary).

I finished highschool (secondary/elementary school) when I was 19 on 2021 but i'm gonna explain my experience on quarantine when I was at the 4th year of secondary: 1- The Blended platform: At first this platform I had a lot of issues on 2020-2021 (bugs, bad update changes) and the worst part: Some of my teachers couldn't understand everything. 2- Zoom Platform: In this one I was totally alright with those online classrooms and I used to teach my teachers how to use the software. And yes, you may remember when joking and trolling on zoom was relevant and my classmates managed to cancel another exposition of Psychology but my group exposed first because my classmates were ready to do the exam. 3- I used to have a lot of homework made with Word, Excel or Powerpoint, however I didn't enjoy making videos on there. 4- Google Meet: In 2021 until september of that year, we were still on quarantine and sometimes I had to use this platform for 1 subject, the thing is that It was nice to have online classes without noises of my classmates screaming out but unfortunately, I went back to school and I got more stressed than before. So the Quarantine was better.

Similar examples can be seen in the Wipeout racing games and in the graphics section of the Y2K entry on the aesthetics wiki. Sorry I can't provide links to any of these.

The funny thing is where I live we never really utilized edtech (aside from Quizlet, a computer lab login, typing games, and a game that I think was called "mathletics" or something) until highschool, I don't even think I had a school Gmail until then (atleast one I knew existed) which I find funny since COVID didn't happen since I was in grade 11 and it continued until I graduated and mask mandates didn't stop until my second semester of the first year of uni. Also speaking of defunct EdTech that would be an interesting video I'm excited now 👀 Edit: Omg I've been noticed

In the CIS (Belarus, Russia, etc.) with Edtech the situation is quite interesting. Teachers are just starting to like educational software, while many schools do not allow it. The EdTech audience is also interesting - the main users of educational courses are not schoolchildren, they are people aged 18-25. I'm sure the EdTech era is just beginning in eastern Europe, it's just that our old-fashioned managers don't want to accept it (calculators in mathematics are banned in our country to this day, xd). (The Finest channel about technologies of the past, lmao)

I think it does depend on the country. As a Romanian I can confirm this whole EdTech trend has been going on here for roughly 6-5 years now. And it’s still used by teachers, especially in the cities where most schools are funded enough to have all the resources. But to be fair Romania is richer than Belarus or Russia so that might have something to do with it…

Good points in this video. I don’t think it will go away because those applications will likely become even more invasive by recording keystrokes and measuring the velocity of mouse movements etc so that they can judge whether or not a student is cheating. Also a lot of those applications could require that a webcam be on while they type out their answers etc. So even if a student tried to do a ctrl + C and ctrl + V from chatGPT that could be logged. I don’t disagree that AI will have a big impact on education apps like that in general though I don’t think they will go away. Government and tech companies are addicted to recording all data from people in general so I doubt that’s going to stop when it comes to schools and education software. Possibly handwritten work could be scanned into those apps and the app would convert it to typed text?

I just found your channel and I just have to say bravo. Not only is your voice absolutely charming, but all of this was so well written and researched. There are channels that post intentional misinformation with millions of subscribers and yet you only have 30k? Ridiculous. As for EdTech, I'm 22. I grew up with my schools using Windows XP when I started, and Windows 8 by the end of it. Some of the schools i was at used iPads, and some didn't. I don't understand why schools stop kids using their phones tbh. It's an integral part of the world now and it just seems like such a missed opportunity to teach more. With the only downside being that kids will probably pick on each other based on what phone they have, I really don't get why we tell them to leave them at home. Ever tried to hold down a job without a phone? Me neither. But I'd bet it's nearly impossible. The only thing is I would say schools need to focus more on digital wellbeing. My day job has me stare at a computer for 6 hours a day. Not healthy. I wish I was taught the correct way to use a computer so less strain is on my back.

Darn, now that you mention it I'm kind of surprised EdTech isn't talked about more amongst those who are concerned about digital privacy. Or maybe it's already talked about a lot and I just haven't been paying attention. I have to say though, it would be kind of interesting to see mass protest from parents who care deeply about their own privacy and use Linux/VM for everything only to see their own children getting sold out to Google/Apple/Microsoft. Maybe we're not seeing too much of that because of an insignificant overlap between today's parents and digital privacy neat-freaks?

I'll be honest I think this video should be retitled to "The Pros and Cons of EdTech", since there's much more discussion in this on the upsides and downsides rather than the actual history. And the only real mention of "rise and fall" is just a short personal anecdote with not much evidence. Just trying to help your channel 😁

A funny story I have to share: back in what would be elementary school in the US (here it goes from grade 1-4), there was a website where you could get points for reading books and answering questions about them. With these points, you could play minigames. I eventually read so much that I had hundreds of thousands of points, which was worth over 12.000 games of Tetris.

Misleading info here. Poorly researched all-around. A) Yes, schools do create Google accounts for their students. But those accounts are tied to our school, not them personally. Once they leave, the account is deactivated. B) What exact data do you reckon will be mined from, say, a math app? Do you imagine that companies care what your multiplication fluency was when you were 9 years old? If you're concerned about a company obtaining a person's data, tell me the last time you read an entire end user agreement before clicking "accept." C) "What happens to all of these accounts after you leave school?" -- Again -- they are deactivated. It's as simple as going into Google Admin and clicking "deactivate" for an entire class of students once they graduate, or on an individual basis when the student leaves the school. D) "Simply too much screen time" -- Students aren't staring at screens all day long. Yes, we've replaced paper with computers--just like we've replaced horses with cars. Computers can do infinitely more than a piece of paper can, and they enable teachers to individualize instruction in a way that simply isn't possible otherwise. E) "Creates an over-reliance on technology" -- 21st century society relies on technology. If we're aiming to prepare students to be ready for the 21st century world, they need to be fluent in the use of technology. F) From the teacher POV, there is absolutely no advantage to having students "print paper out, staple it, and turn it in by hand." In fact, there are many advantages to having students use Google Classroom or something similar, in terms of time, energy, and organization. G) The concept of ed-tech "rising and falling" is silly. It's simply rising right now, as companies find ways to address needs. I haven't heard of a school that implemented technology successfully, and then said "You know what? Let's stop using technology." H) Many of your points here are "Maybe it's good to... I don't know but what if ..." -- This is called speculation. You aren't providing an argument with evidence to back it, just saying "what if?" ... Do yourself a favor and research a topic before creating a video with a thesis on that topic.
