In this video, we're diving deep into the fascinating history of jailbreak on iOS. Let’s find out what happened to its creator the so-called Saurik...
Why in 2016, the FBI tried to use his knowledge to hack an iPhone.
Finally, we’ll discuss what happened to Cydia’s store, and how Apple was able to kill the jailbreak and the vibrant community of Jailberakers.

@@nothing1843 Actually, that's what some security researchers do. They'll get the bounty, and once a patch has been released, they release the code used to exploit. That has resulted in the current drip-feed of exploits that barely keeps the jailbreak scene alive nowadays.

@Blu3ManiC 8 күн бұрын
Apple never pays the bounty, there’s plenty of devs that have never been paid out with anything more than credit in the patch notes that nobody reads. What actually killed it is the black market of selling exploits to malware makers and other hackers. Why write a jailbreak when you can have a botnet of iPhone users that don’t know they’re infected?

@@ArthurBrassart Speaking of improving your editing skills, the VCR sounds is interesting. The duct tape transition not so much. As a general rule of thumb, people will put up with subpar video but not audio. That being said, if it was me I would use an EQ HPF -6dB roll off around 250hz (this removes the low droning sound from your low voice, some of us don't want our skulls rattled by headphones just listening to a talking head, take it as a compliment). This will give the narration more clarity. Then normalize audio at -9dbFS Sample Peak Program (General rule of thumb for dialog is keep it between -15 to -10dB) this is why -9dbFS (SPP) is default setting in Davinci Resolve, btw. Keep it up dude!

I used to jailbreak back in the iPhone 4/5 days it was fun while it lasted, with recent developments to iOS you dont really need tp jailbreak anymore, but if you think about it, apple just stole ideas from old school tweaks and presents them as new and revolutionary? ......icon customization? weve had that for years but iOS 18 is 'revolutionary'

This has to be my biggest grip. I jailbroke phones from the first till the 6th and as someone who is now an open source dev I despise apple for the way the treated the brilliant jailbreak community. Stole their ideas, threatend them with legal action and all around treated us like criminal scum for daring to break their precious walled garden. I don't think I will ever regret switching to android.

I originally studied computer science when I began college (switched to audio production about halfway through; big change, I know). I had this cybersecurity class that required us to do a semester project, but it was very open ended, so me and this one guy decided to do our project on jailbreaking. For a big chunk of my research, I jailbroke my iPhone 7 and used it for the entire semester. I helped people out on Reddit, tried different combinations of tweaks, etc etc. Our paper was very well done, and when we presented to the class, we were tied for the class’s favorite presentation of the day… the teacher failed us (56/100) without a single mark on our paper and no comments on any of it. This teacher was in bed with Silicon Valley big tech, so I’m almost certain she did it just because she didn’t like it. Thanks for reading my story, random person on the internet. I miss the jailbreak times. Apple made a mistake by actively killing the literal thinktank behind the best iOS features we have now. Once the apps market got way better on Android (2013-14), I moved to it just to be able to have my own custom phone instead of barely having different wallpapers. Although, Android as well has became closed and the root scene pretty much died unless you have very one of few devices. But it will take much more than iOS 18 to catch up lol.

I was a diehard Windows user my whole life. I only bought an iPhone 4 so I could buy a car mount that was specifically made for a phone's hardware (I hated universal phone mounts). I was a power user (I pirated DirecTV for a number of years) so I investigated jailbreaking immediately, but I never bothered doing it. I didn't want to brick my expensive phone, I didn't want to mess it up so that I was without a cellphone for any length of time, and there was never any killer app that I had to have that required jailbreaking. I don't regret it. Jailbreaking was as much a hacker hobby as it was a practical resource. More so in fact.

Never was an iOS user but I always LOVED Open Source community and their hard work for making consumer devices more customizable and better in many ways. 2000-2015 were GOLDEN days for technology and hacking your devices, so much freedom and excitement but now it became way too complicated, not enough exciting advancements, people are being too distracted by social media etc. Boring and soul-less time in technology these days...

I personally think the transition is kind of annoying. But this is a really good structured video on history of jailbreaking. This takes me back. I made a dark mode UI for winter board back then. Like multitasking background status bar, default, iPhone apps and etc.. though I posted it for free. I miss those good old days. Jailbreaking community was very tight. Almost like being part of a family. Shame that those days will never be here again again. As far as I know, jailbreaking is completely dead. So I think we still need to be able to do it. The software updates don’t give us all the cool stuff we used to have. I miss making my entire home screen dance to Harlem shake lol

Jailbreaking is the best thing to ever happen to Apple. 1. Because people bought iPhones just to jailbreak them. 2. Every feature in iOS today comes from tweaks like bioprotect and dark mode.

Jailbreaking was awesome. You were usually behind on OS versions but still years ahead in terms of features. This brought back so many memories. Tethering, the control center, customization (home screen wallpapers!) and most importantly for me at the time - carrier unlocking (which also required with a push notification fix because only properly registered devices supported that, so every now and then you'd receive a push notification from someone else because I assume keys were shared) I had a carrier locked first gen iPhone and a locked 3GS, it wasn't until the 4S that I bought a new, unlocked one but sadly also the first one I didn't jailbreak anymore. It was still a glorious time, thanks Jay. Man, do I miss the late 2000's internet when the entire thing was mostly run by people, not corporations…

Jailbreak been a huge part of my childhood. My first iOS device ever been an iPod 2nd gen on iOS 4.2.1 , done the jailbreak with appsync installed , to get to install cracked apps . Then my first iPhone 3G in 2014 , when the look of iOS changed with iOS 7 , some developer launched a version of iOS 3.1.3 with all the tweaks from iOS 7 , which was mind blowing, it was designed to run on 2G/3G , iPod 1st gen , 2nd gen . Anyways jailbreak was cool , it was a flex back then to have an iPhone with endless pages of games and apps .

I remember getting the third generation iPod touch and jailbreaking it. So many useful features came from jailbreak such as the Control Center stuff we have in stock iOS now. The thing about beating jailbreak is that not only they patched the security exploits, but they also copied some features which made regular people want to jailbreak their phones in the first place. Kinda like how Steam helped reduce piracy with good customer service.

Same, Cydia still has the blobs saved from when I jailbroke it with p0sixspwn. Pretty amazing how many features were available on the third gen compared to the previous, despite both of them running that same iOS 4.2.1 software. After all, never quite likened to iMessage on the 3G compared to how everyone knew it on the 4G alongside FaceTime

Your video is well explained and easy to understand. Thank you. I had a jailbroken ipod touch in 2009 I bought with my money from my first job. I remember having apps like winterboard to customize the icons. My girlfriend at the times little brother showed me how to do all these amazing things. there was little to no risks I had to reset and re jailbreak many times. I stopped using Apple when I could no longer use my hardware how I wanted and went to Android... which was in the Jellybean Era. (edit I still have screenshots of these custom ipod touch themes.)
