Blackburn fan here. This guy was amazing in his pomp - superb technique, powerful and strong, hold up and link up play was on point, and one of the very best headers in the professional game. On his day he was simply unstoppable. He wasn't the fastest but in his prime his athleticism wasn't in question, some of his diving headers were incredible.

I think the title is misleading. He was a really good striker with ~ 10y Premier League career. Did he set a world on fire? No, he was not Schevchenko or Drogba but he lasted in top of the game as top scorer until his early 30s like most do. He wasn't a flop and there was no fall, he just aged out.

If Leeds did right by him and net a 30 million profit, he maybe wins 2 champions leagues with AC Milan. Leeds instead sold him in a fire sale for no profit to Borough and he ended up wasting his time at Newcastle...best player on the hold and turn I've ever seen...the kind of player who could give you a long ball option which would shake up the current fixation with playing out from the back. The 4 goals against Liverpool was like a fairytale...in 2000 he was bigger than Haarland...and way more skilful. If only Leeds had finished 4th and gotten champions league...if only the assault fiasco hadn't happened...if only...the tenacity of Ferdinand, Bowyer, Harte, Smith... the triangles with Dacourt and Kewell ...if only.

A good player for Celtic.....when he was in the mood. I'm not buying the "I always gave 100 per cent/150 per cent/2 million per cent every game I played for Celtic" comments. On his day he WAS great - I was at the Kilmarnock 5-1 game when he scored a hattrick in about 5 minutes, and he scored a great goal against Rangers that completely bamboozled Klos who barely had time to react. But too often he strolled around with a face liked a slapped erse, even after he scored. That season after Larsson got injured was horrible, with those other fannies Ian Wright and Eyal Berkovic and their appalling attitudes. Viduka was a good striker for us but in the end sadly just another uppity prima donna just after the Di Canio/Van Hooijdonk/Cadete days. Christ we got badly burnt by undoubtedly talented but shall we say 'temperamental' foreign strikers in those days.

@alexwallach7683 11 goals from 43 caps, is that really the type of striker you need right now?
@alexwallach76832 ай бұрын
@@calvinhicks1992 Compared to whats in the squad now, yes. If he was in the current team he would be the best player by a country mile. While at the time I thought him not returning to play in the A-league was scummy, in all fairness the A-league is an awful competition and part of the reason why the national team is now struggling. I'm going to say it right now, Australia won't qualify for the next world cup and it won't be Popovich's fault. It will be 15 years of mediocrity coming home to roost. Yes, Viduka was far to impressed with himself and could have done so much more in his career, but if a 19 year old version of him showed up right now he'd be hands down starter.
@ArachKing2 ай бұрын
@@alexwallach7683 I shared the same sentiment@ the time, but looking back now I applaud his loyalty to Melbourne Knights, and furthermore I suspect his refusal to play in the A-League was also out of protest at the way the Knights and other ‘monoethnic’ clubs were utterly shafted by the FFA in its attempt to shed the ‘w0gb@ll’ image of the game in 🇦🇺..
@alexwallach76832 ай бұрын
@@ArachKing Yeah, sounds reasonable. Mind you, the world had just seen the horrors of the post-yugoslavia war, so I can kind of understand the FFA's desire to tone down the Serb/Croat influence in the game. It was taking on an unhealty tarnish at that point. That said, I feel including these clubs instead of pushing them away would achieved a better effect as it would have opened them to a new fan base outside of these ethnic groups that probably would have toned down that element anyway.

It's a misrepresentation to simply refer to him as a stressed footballer when leaving Dinamo. It is also naive to simply refer to him as Australian. Viduka was Croatian in everything but birthplace and upbringing. Tudjman the Croatian leader and then Dinamo president handpicked him to represent their nation as a perfect Croat in a similar way that may have happened in Berlin in 1937. It was post war Nationalism and Viduka was a figure head but really he just wanted to play football. His parents should have known better and convinced him not to go there in my opinion. The political pressure on him was insane for a young man. As a Middlesbrough fan who lived in Croatia, I can say he was a very good footballer who with a better diet and love for the game could have been playing for the very best teams in the world. I played cricket with him and Schwarzer once and they were both excellent and very decent blokes.

Viduka was never eligible to play for Croatia as he had already debuted for Australia at youth level before Croatia was recognised as a state. Before 2000 you could not change your football nationality once you played one game for a country even if it was at youth level. Hence why Josip Šimunić refused to play for Australia as he always intended to play for Croatia. Also Viduka could neither play for Ukraine as his mother was an ethnic Ukrainian from Croatia. She never held Ukrainian citizenship but Croatian citizenship. Get your facts straight next time you do a story ;o)
