That Neo Soul Era from the late 90's/Early 00's was something special

He definitely was a big part of the peak years. Dwele, too. Also, Robert Glasper deserves a lot of credit for not only being part of some of the key records but also taking neo soul forward.

Neo soul isn’t dead, it’s just not main stream. So many artist are still making good music evolved or based on this genre
@philmole12093 ай бұрын
Definitely agreed. It's easy to hear the influence in Cleo Soul, Lianne La Havas, Michael Kiwanuka, and even in recent hip hop artists like Little Simz. Kali Uchis sounds close enough to me sometimes to get a couple songs added to my neo soul playlist.

Soul is very well alive. It may not have the recognition it deserves but there is tone of indie labels that are keeping it alive. Anybody who see's this, look up. -Jalen Ngonda -Thee Sacred Souls -Kelly Finnigan Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings -Thee Sinseers -Durand Jones And The Indications There is so many great soul artists that still take it back to those Motown days. Growing up, us Chicanos were/are notorious for bumping oldies and it's still very alive today. Please check out some of these new artists. Some amazing soul

I'd add Cleo Soul and Lianne La Havas to that list. Everything and everyone connected with Sault in the UK. And while not exactly neo soul, Jamila Woods is great.

@@philmole1209 I've never heard of these artists, I'll definitely check them out. Thank you for giving more artists to check out. I'm a soul head lol, so any new artists are always welcomed

Daptone records is the powerhouse behind most of these folks, specifically the dap-kings. Check out their roster (same guys behind Amy winehouse's instrumentation). Other sick neo soulers are andra day, pip millet, celeste, joy crookes, greentea peng, black pumas, michael kiwanuka. also your list is taking me back to lee fields & the expressions with that motowny vibe

Would be a great time to check out the CAMP EP by artist CAMP aka Aaron Camper. A brand new, fresh take on R&B, raw soul, blended with his own take coming from the post neo soul movement. We'd love to see this guy go! True artistry.

Good Try nice presentation, but you only Get a C because How U Gon leave out The Godmother of Neo Soul Meshell Ndegeochello and the Love Jones Soundtrack! Meshells breakthrough sophomore album Peach Beyond Passion is the Corner stone of everyone's collection, and that Love Jones Soundtrack caps it off. You talk about when NS lost momentum but give credit to the two bots who helped commercialize NS India.Arie & Musiq Soulchild. India being Meshells bot & Musiq being DAngelos bot. Also you forgot Raphael Saadiq who bridged into Neo Soul. And you gave Michael Jackson credit for New Jack when it was Teddy Riley who produced a few songs for him MJ was not a New Jack Swing Artist like Bobby Brown was. Over all I enjoyed looking back thanks 👍

Raphael Saadiq did a lot more than just bridging into Neo-Soul my friend. Saadiq's influence & impact on the Neo-Soul movement & subgenre in music alone speaks volumes. If you go back & listen to the song writing he created with Tony! Toni! Tone! back in the day. It should be obviously clear to anyone how much of a factor Raphael was as a pioneer & arguably one of the main founders of Neo-Soul music from the jump! As far as I'm concerned Saadiq played an important role to the energy vibe & sound of Neo-Soul music. Just trying to keep it a buck here, ya dig? 🤔🧐🙄 +++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend & All That Jazz In Hip-Hop Too!+++ 🤘😜🤘

It still lives, just not at the forefront like the late 90s early 2000. You have Nia Sultan and SZA who has that vibe, DVSN Lucky Daye, there's a number of these artist that are in that genre.

First of all, I loved the video, and just subscribed! On neo soul, I think of it this way. There's some old school soul we can loosely think of "progressive" because it was a little removed from the blues-based deep soul that, say, Aretha and most Stax artists had, because it had more complex arrangements, sometimes used jazzy chords, and sometimes but not all the time had a political and social consciousness. I'm thinking stuff like Isaac Hayes, Minnie Riperton, Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scott-Heron, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder. Also in the '70s, you had some jazz fusion artists who leaned into some soul, like Roy Ayers and George Duke and the early part of Patrice Rushen's career. Flash forward to the late '80s/early '90s, and you have progressive soul merging with house/electronic and hip-hop to form acid jazz, and also have hip-hop artists like De La Soul and a Tribe Called Quest and Gang Star sampling a lot of old jazz records and starting to make music that's jazzier in composition. I think that's the immediate background that neo soul evolves from. Meshell Ndegeocello and Dionne Farris put out albums in '93 and '94, respectively that combined funk, soul and hip hop, and in MeShell's case she's got a clear jazz influence. I think her "Plantation Lullabies" is probably the first neo soul album. Dilla was inspired by all of the above, and when he himself comes into the game producing hip hop like Pharcyde and De La Soul and then early stuff by Erykah Badu, that's another big step in the evolution, because the Soulquarians are born. I also don't think neo soul is "gone," really, I just think like you said, a lot of artists continuing its influence don't need or want the label. People like Cleo Soul and Lianne La Havas come to mind.

I would consider Bryson Tiller, Brent Faiyaz, H.E.R., Jhene Aiko, SZA very close if not directly inspired by neo soul. You can hear it in their music

I don't think Soul can be replaced. At least Neo Soul isn't a generic creation. After all, it's music. Although I don't care for Jazz Fusion, it shoulder on traditional Jazz and did pretty well.
