When I was a kid, servers in any game that gave you in-game advantages for donating was a server one avoided like the plague.
@ccaagg Жыл бұрын
From what I remember, most of it was kids thinking it's a bad thing *because* the servers they like were *telling them* it's a bad thing and that the servers they love won't be able to continue without it. The server staff are much more directly related to the kids playing on them than Mojang, so they can get them on their side much easier.

@@TheDolphinTuna Back in 2013, I don't remember any large server where donating didn't get you _something._ It was only the egregious ones (ie PvP servers mostly) which were avoided. Yeah but community servers have to make money. The server I used to play had a donor kits you could buy but they were never too op and they were manageable. Not only did advantages like this matter for people to want to donate and keep servers up but it also encouraged players to stay, since a lot of people would quit pvp before they played enough to be decent. That's all for pvp side of things but regardless in the long run from what I can tell, it was a bad thing.

I still idolize the impact of him. His takes are bad but his impact is more than any game ever, you can’t go anywhere without seeing something of Minecraft and in turn Notch. You can’t say “I play video games” without someone asking if you played MC. You can’t have a Minecraft quiz or facts without the mention of Notch. I still call Golden Apples “Notch Apples” for god sake. I don’t think he’s right in any means but I do think the man deserves some sort of peace after going through hell and back. He went through and became the biggest influence way before any game was. He sold 33 million copies in 2013, way before the internet was as big as it is now. I’d say one man with that kind of recognition would go insane no matter the circumstance. Edit: since people are keep coming at me for my usage of words lol. I should’ve been more clear I suppose, it’s not that the internet was less popular, it’s just more widely used now. Read my other comments if you want an explanation of my thought process. After Notch sold Minecraft he became a billionaire and had "reached the top", he was supposed to be one of the happiest people in the world, however he came to the grim realization that he wasn't. He no longer had a purpose in life to fill his days, nor could he form meaningful interpersonal relationships anymore due to the isolating effect of his vast wealth (considering the parties he threw it's hard not to draw parallels between him and Jay from The Great Gatsby). Inevitably he got depressed and spiraled further and further into mental illness. As for the political radicalization, studies have clearly shown that on average mentally ill people are drastically more susceptible to it and that political radicalization in itself can lead to the development of various mental illness. I think the main take away from Notch's story is that if you ever run into a financial windfall yourself, it's imperative that you don't let it significantly alter your lifestyle. It's probably best to continue to live fairly normally and simply use your wealth as an opportunity to enhance the existing things that bring you happiness, for example pursuing a more enjoyable career path and getting to take your hobbies to higher levels. I think it's important that we keep in mind that whilst money can't buy happiness, it can add / remove the obstacles to happiness depending on how you use it.

It is, of course, embelished to create an interesting narrative but it is based on the true story. The creator of Spotify, Daniel Ek, comes off as very similar to Notch. A solitary guy who created something that grew beyond imagination. Someone who was dedicated to their product, but seemingly were in over their head. The story of Playlist ends (Spoiler) much like the story of Notch: the creator went from being regarded as a genius to being seen as a piece of shit. Point is, if I had a nickel for every time a Swedish man created a product that became globally known and then fell from grace, I'd have two nickels. @@D44RK_Iced_Yogs you serious? The Internet was still massive in 2009 when the game came out. I think you're mixing up the time that smartphones came about, mainly with the original iPhone in 2007, and the rise of the Internet in general. Computers were already widespread, especially in developed countries, by then. It's just the smartphone segment that has quite literally exploded

The Infiniminer code was leaked, that is how Notch started the Cave Game. He wasn't inspired and then coded it from scratch, he downloaded and edited it, mapping on his own textures that are from other games he has made. This isn't to downplay anything, if you look at his previous games, he always had a game like Minecraft in his mind, but the leaked source code was the final thing he needed to put all his ideas together. Also he didn't come up with the name Minecraft, someone in one of his chats did. It's kind of like Apple, they had an idea they were trying to achieve with the personal computer, then one day they seen Xerox PARCs GUI and mouse etc, and that was what Steven Jobs needed to finally put all his ideas together and make something great. The infiniminer source code is Notches Xerox.

I don’t think I can hate Notch. He was a normal person with billions of dollars dropped into his lap and nothing to spend it on. He wasn’t making games anymore and was searching for a purpose and so he found one that suited his personality, rallying against something bigger than himself. A lack of purpose is never good for the human mind. It makes us listless and desperate and Notch made it clear that’s exactly how he felt. I hope that he finds a purpose in whatever game he was talking about making this year, it’ll be good for his mind to put himself to work again.

@@coadekatits insane how you think that it isnt. It doesnt have to be word for word verbatim what he said for it to be what is possible under it. The legislation was worded so poorly that it could be used to persecute people for misgendering. Something so poorly worded should not be legislation no matter what its supposed "intent" is. Its like making a bill called the "save puppys" bill, and sneaking in wording that would allow you to put political rivals in prison, and then getting mad when people question it.

Shuniji is one of my favourites, it somehow makes me feel like how time is dripping away, and things are... moving, whether we like it or not, and everything shifts around us. It felt fitting for Notch really, I believe too that the problem with him was indeed mostly that he was cast into a sandbox world irl without having any goal there.

minecraft has been the best thing that has happened to me . as a weird and autistic kid - minecraft just spelled out everything for me . i made friends i wouldnt have been able to through it , i was allowed to be weird and cringe through it . but with that , i am also trans and gay . Notch used to be my idol , he was low end and "weird" , so when i first had internet access , i found his tumblr and read through everything i could . And then 2019-2020 rolled around . obviously i just couldnt continue being fine with him as an idol or just someone i looked up to . that hurt . i often look back and wonder why he fell in the alt-right pipeline even though he isnt an american . sad to see politics and paranoia destroy someone so deeply

The Harry Potter fandom has a lot of the same struggles I hear, and your far from alone in the minecraft community on this. Notch isn't the only person I know who lost / completed their primary purpose in life, became isolated and embroiled in online politics and conspiracy theories, alienating and pushing away friends and family. It's a vicious cycle people become engaged in because they desperately need *something* to care and fight for, and for some reason this kind of stuff seems easy to fall for for this demographic.
@HeadOnAStick Жыл бұрын
I think Notch cared a lot about the community his game created, and then he felt they turned against him when all the cruel comments rolled in. It wounded him and affected his faith in humanity. I've heard KZbin content creators describe this too. When you're small, people are mostly supportive. When your channel takes off, random people show up and sling ignorant sh**. If he had hired someone to filter the feedback, it might have all turned out differently.

I do believe we need to separate the artist from the art. If not, we would not have much art left. Writers, painters, actors, directors, producers, musicians, philosophers, have often said or done bad things or held bad views. It is more the rule than the exception. I think that artists often give the best part of themselves to their art, leaving little for the people in their lives. That said, artists should not be immune from criticism for the bad things that they say and or do. It's a tricky line, especially in this age of social media. But if you really don't want to give an artist your money by paying for their work, because you don't like them, that is fair, but get it some other way. Second hand, or from a library, or whatever. But don't deprive yourself of the art itself. These are two separate things. And we all need art.
