Nintendo's a fascinating example of a company that's been able to continuously compete in a winner take all market via the strength of their IP. Games like Mario Bros and Zelda have such large pull that they can bring users to their often inferior platforms (though in the current generation the Switch's portability is a powerful differentiator). I think Nintendo is the success story while SEGA is the cautionary tale. Sega's IP just wasn't powerful enough to bring users to the Saturn and Dreamcast. If Sega could've developed a larger variety of successful properties and avoided some of their infamous missteps, we all might be playing a new age version of the Sega Nomad today instead of the Switch! 🎮👾

Nintendo doesn't either, both the other two are so massive, the video game side of their business pales in comparison. Nintendo only survives off their own IP. Mario and Zelda are not only two of the biggest ones, but have also branched off into subfranchises- especially Mario. Now, Nintendo has such a niche that its "worst" selling system can still achieve nearly 14 million hardware sales! Sega wasn't even able to crack 10 million with either the Saturn or Dreamcast (actual validated sources, not estimates, now put them around 9 million each).

The one thing that would have saved Dreamcast was the inclusion of a DVD drive. This was the main selling point for the PS2, and the reason people were willing to wait one more year.
@jackson51164 жыл бұрын
But, Sega was already selling Dreamcast at a loss with the CD drive, they add DVD, and it'll cost them even more to produce each unit. They needed not only a DVD drive, but also the ability to play DVD's, and use Sony's strategy of losing money on each hardware unit to recoup that on software. Sega's 3rd party loss was what did them in, they couldn't survive on their own IP like Nintendo could, because Nintendo had a longer head start meaning more franchises, and more subfranchises.
@FabledGentleman4 жыл бұрын
@@jackson5116 Dreamcast actually didn't use a CD rom but a GD rom. And yeah, it would cost them a lot of money to swap to DVD. But on the flipside, the entire company almost went bankrupt, so anything would have been better than that.

@Diabeto Kills No. Xbox is proof that the DVD drive was very important. If Dreamcast had that, Sega would be able to have their share of the market, Sony would of course always be bigger, but as long as you can hold on to 20-30%, you are doing fine.
@wizzgamer4 жыл бұрын
@@jackson5116 They only started selling the Dreamcast at a loss once they dropped the price to $149 to have any chance of selling the Dreamcast with DVD playback they would have had to delay it a year to a simultaneous worldwide release in fall 1999 rather than 98 in Japan. Then up the ram to 24MB up the cpu to 233mhz and sell it for $399 but I think that would have been too expensive for many and $299 would have sold it at a significant loss.

Sega is still one of the best video game companies in the world and I would say Atari also at one point was one of the world's best video game companies like Nintendo. Sega and Atari could both come back by joining forces with Nintendo in their next console along with making more games for them, so it would give Sony and Microsoft some interesting competition after the PS5 and XBOX Series X and S come out later this year.
@hermeticxhaote47234 жыл бұрын
You have left out several important parts of their fall. The 32x was released right before the SEGA Saturn which was very stupid to do as they competed with themselves. Then they abandoned the Saturn while it was still in its prime lifecycle in order to focus on the Dreamcast, which wasn't even out yet. These decisions caused their fall as much as anything else, why wasn't any of this mentioned in this video?
@NickCMedia4 жыл бұрын
Abandoning the Saturn wasn't actually a mistake. The Saturn was already dying, after a disastrous abrupt launch, the *real* reason Sega lost its edge. Plus, with the 64-bit Nintendo 64 on the market, there was nothing more Sega could do except focus on the Dreamcast. The 32X-- All Sega lost was money and some consumers. The Saturn-- They lost money, a lot more consumers than they did with the 32X, and a lot of third-party support.

I’d like to add at one point in 1995 Sega had six divisions they were running. The Genesis was the bread and butter. The Sega CD and 32X we’re both subpar as Sega was diverting resources to support them. That’s why their games weren’t as fondly remembered. They were stop gap measures meant to tide players over until the new 32 bit consoles were released. The Game Gear was a moderate success but no match to the Game Boy Colour. The Sega Saturn was the new kid on the block and needed more money and programmers. That took up a large portion of their financial resources. It was the company’s future. All of those except the Genesis were behind in sales to Nintendo. The last and only division not competing with Nintendo was Sega’s arcade division. Sega had trouble focusing on where and how to spend money in which division. Gamers like me remember that time as schizophrenic for Sega. By the time the Dreamcast arrived players were burnt by the 32X and Sega CD. Followed by the botched marketing and high cost of the Saturn. Combined that with the strong showing of the PlayStation and how polished Nintendo games were it was a knockout punch for Sega.
@TimelessTimothy4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it really hurts me that Sega made such critically poor decisions... (though I'm surprised you guys didn't talk about the various disagreements Sega of America and Japan had with each other.) Like, I still wonder how things would have been if Sega actually made the right decisions at the right time. Especially with those Genesis add-ons. No one talks about the 32x, for good reason as well. I hope SEGA would learn how to manage success and maintain it. When I was only 4 or 5 years old, my dad bought me the Playstation 2, Sonic Mega Collection, and two other games (Scooby-Doo: First Frights and Spiderman 2). About a year after, I got Sonic Heroes. I loved that game *so* much. The story was fascinating and exciting, the gameplay was decent and intimidating at points. (But the special stages were ridiculously difficult.) Then, when I was 8, I got Sonic Colors. I loved that game as well. (Somehow, "Speak with Your Heart" made me cry. Maybe because it was the credits?) Ever since then, I haven't bought a single one of Sonic's 3D outings. (I would watch playthroughs frequently though!) Sonic Mania and Sonic Generations are amazing and basically phenomenal. However, I still am a Sonic fan, but his games aren't as.. consistently high-quality as of now. I've seen way too many missed opportunities as of late, particularly Sonic Forces and Lost World. I do enjoy his mobile adventures, but I don't play them often. Honestly, I long for another breakout moment for SEGA and especially Sonic. I just want my favorite blue blur to be successful and stay that way. I'll keep optimism because I'm sure something great will *eventually* come. I'm looking at you, Sonic Movie. We'll just have to hope SEGA learns from their mistakes. *Big time.* Thank you all for reading this -essay- long comment! Have a great day!

Nintendo always make money. They focus on very young children and family friendly games. Only the WiiU objectively failed (also the Virtual Boy but we don’t talk about that). Nintendo don’t contribute to the industry though. They dominate it. They knocked out all the competition in the handheld market with the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour then released the Game Boy Advance which had no backlight. But they cater to a loyal customer base that appreciate their style of gameplay. But they don’t innovate. The Wii could be considered an innovation but it really only worked with the Wii Sports and Wii Ware titles. No other developer could design around the device?effectively and as a gun it’s too slow to move the reticle to work properly. Nintendo don’t contribute, they dominate and recycle nostalgic ip’s to maintain market share based on familiarity and referencing established franchises from their distant past. I don’t think the world needs another Mario Kart game but it’s gonna get it and every game publication will give it a perfect score.

Hey, Manny Fidel! 1990 called, and he wants his high top fade back! Sega was the first console I bought with my first paycheck from my first job in 1989. Sega Genesis was not the first Sega console in the US...it was the Master System (which is not shown in this video). The Sega Master System included control pads, 3-D glasses, a blaster, and a copy of Missile Defense 3-D. The console also had a hidden maze game that was accessible by pressing the controller buttons in a particular sequence. In 1994, I bought the Sega Genesis, and (eventually) the CD attachment. I owned a few of the CD titles, but I mostly bought the cartridges. I was a big fan of Sega, but (overtime) I realized gaming consoles were a waste of money, and not as practical (or powerful) as PC gaming. I give this video a like because it's about Sega, although Business Insider missed some details. I like Company Man better anyway. Good video! But you missed the mistakes that sega of america did with the 32X and the (early) prevention of RPGs on the Saturn.

2:10 That's Not true you're saying it in the opposite the SNES had the blood while the Genesis allows you to unlock the blood by entering a code
@rubberstack4 жыл бұрын
That's untrue. In the first Mortal Kombat the Nintendo version is censored while sega version allows you to unlock it with a code. However Mortal Kombat 2 and all of it's sequels had blood and didn't require a code on SNES or the Genesis version.

The _console war_ is just silly. People are arguing about plastics and electronics. 🤦♂️ You guys forgot pretty much all of the other add ons for the Genesis. The problem with Sega started when Saturn launched in the the US, only for Sega to admit that they had little faith in the Saturn and that's around the time the DreamCast launched & why the Saturn did so pooly in the US. Anyway, I don't think younger kids will even care about this. Kids today seem only to be about _Fortnite_ (still) and _Minecraft_ mainly; basically games that "influencers" play and stream on Twitch and other social networking sites.

The Dreamcast library massive if you look at the Japanese import market, there were so many great games in the Japanese market North America missed out on. By the time the Dreamcast officially went under in North America, the Dreamcast in Japan survived just a bit longer before going under in the end of it's lifespan.

Dreamcast also had a different issue in Japan. Stock shortages for its early launch period. This early rush launch was intended to curve the momentum of PlayStation and later the PS2 and to get as many Dreamcasts out in the public, a lesson Sega learned during the Saturn and N64 Era where they realized they outsold the N64 (which came to the scene a year late) so the stock shortage and the fact that PS 2 launched with more stock alongside affordable DVD replay ability really was a blow to the Dreamcast.

I dont think there is any console war nowaday (at least not for me). You have a PC, get a Switch, get a PS4 and you have everything.
@andrewd49063 жыл бұрын
You missed the 32X add on for the genesis. I for one regretted buying a Sega CD as it never delivered on it's promises. The rushed out Saturn upset a lot of retailers who didn't get any at launch and then refused to stock it. Game developers also found it difficult to program. Piracy didn't do the Dreamcast any favours as it didn't need any modification to run copied games.

I really still am a big fan of Sega and Atari both like Nintendo some of the best video game companies in the world. Maybe Sega and Atari should consider teaming up with Nintendo for their next console so they can compete with Sony and Microsoft. Today video game industry is a multi billion dollar business which makes more money then movies along with esports where some video game players become professional gamers and make millions competing against professional video game players. Sega like Atari may not be in the console wars anymore like before but I hope they continue to make games so they can be up there with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft among the world's elite video game companies today.

i think that a large part of sega's success is heavily related with Japan not allowed to produce Weapon and ammunition after WWII, they had to lift themselves up at that time and thats how they became a technology empire, kind of similar to the German vehicle market for an example.

Let's not forget about the 32x, as well as Sega of America, and Sega of Japan constantly butting heads, and competing with one another. The animosity within Sega was a huge contributor to its downfall.
@NickCMedia4 жыл бұрын
But the Sega Saturn's abrupt launch was the top contributor to Sega's downfall in the console market. The others-- If Sega had just waited, they would've bounced back. Tom Kalinske said so himself.

The problem, as far as I know, is that Sega wanted to be able to make and release high-type games on platforms, but they have been missing the spark of light ever since the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast's sales dropped after getting released onto the public, although they tried to fight with Nintendo and Sony in terms of what they both had up to this day and forward, including games like the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 duology of games. The long-lasting extend of this issue was that they been releasing games ever since to consoles like the PS2 and Wii in order to interest the fans of awesome franchises like the Sonic and Sakura Taisen franchises, but with no one buying their games anymore considering there have been games that can take up the gaming industry as well as the fans by surprise based on genres, such as Action and Tactical RPGs, like Mobile Suit Gundam and Super Robot Taisen. Those two franchises are now Japanese to English Subtitled exclusives in Asia for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch in terms of how charming they are in comparison toward those games in the rest of the world mostly rather than them.

I bought the Nintendo DSXL just to buy a lot of retro games. One of the games I have on it is the sonic collection. I loved the Genesis. I owned the Genesis until well... The N64 came out. N64 is one of the few consoles I love over the Genesis. Who remembers the Sega Game Gear?

You want to tell the story of Sega and you don't even talk about the Sega Master System? What's the point of doing a story like this if you're going to be lazy in your research?
@zylowolf79194 жыл бұрын
@@lednails very true. I love the Master System, but I never even heard of it as a kid. Everyone was too busy going crazy over the NES. But it was the NES that made Sega step it up and make the Genesis/Mega Drive. So as much as the hardcore fans who have been there since the beginning love Sega's first (not even) console, it stunk in the sales department here. Heck I would argue Genesis is the most American console Sega ever made. Top celebrities and athletes at the time were promoting it and even getting their own games. They had awesome advertising and released games that catered to an older and hipper demographic. Then they came up with Sonic, possibly the greatest video game mascot after Mario and Pac Man. Genesis brought about the console war. It helped create the first video game ratings system. Genesis does, baby.

Funny how Sega is considered a Japanese company even though it started in Hawaii.
@zylowolf79194 жыл бұрын
Katz was out a year before in 1990, that's when Kalinske was hired. Kalinske was the one who said Sega needed a proper mascot and to rebrand itself. So he came up with a multi step plan to slowly but surely sell the Genesis and get it in every home in America.
@zylowolf79194 жыл бұрын
SNES was made to combat the Genesis. That's when they started comparing the two in ads. Master System was pretty much considered dead by that point. Besides, Sega had the Game Gear to worry about.
@transce4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's called "The Rise And Fall Of Sega", not "The Rise And Fall Of Genesis and Subsequent Consoles". Master System was hugely popular in Europe and other parts of the world and if you don't talk about it in "the rise" then you haven't done your job as a researcher. Skipping it completely because you're from North America and you're not familiar with it is lazy at best and arrogant at worst.
