Sandwiched between the 1998 and 2002 releases of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, respectively, was the oft-forgotten Syphon Filter that hit the original PlayStation in 1999. Each title contributed building blocks to the stealth-action genre. Metal Gear Solid with its innovative storytelling and mechanics set a perfect cadence. Splinter Cell’s masterful use of shadows and immersive gameplay laid new ground. Syphon Filter left its own mark on so-called sneak 'em ups, leaning heavily towards the genre’s action-oriented qualities while tackling then-contemporary subjects such as bioweapons and shadowy terrorist cells.
Many remember the PlayStation franchise’s first three entries as bonafide classics, yet the fourth release-The Omega Strain-ventured too far from its roots. Dismal reviews and a subpar commercial showing for The Omega Strain brought Syphon Filter’s momentum to a sudden stop. Not even the acclaimed PSP installments could restore the series' former glory.
The property, consequently, lay dormant for nearly 15 years before a ray of hope shined on future prospects for protagonist Gabe Logan and The Agency under which he conducted covert operations. That hope manifested via Days Gone, an open-world zombie game that deftly tied the former’s outbreak to the programmable virus that PlayStation players tried repressing in years past.
A questionably-managed day one release and reportedly missed sales targets shifted Days Gone to the sidelines, once more calling Syphon Filter’s future into question. Given that key creative forces have since departed developer Bend Studio, it would appear Syphon Filter’s long-standing status as little more than a PlayStation classic won’t be remedied anytime soon.
This is the rise and fall of Syphon Filter.

I agree 100%. In the PS2 days, I didn't have broadband internet and I didn't know anyone who did. So a lot of Omega Strain felt very neutered and I didn't like it that much due to being stuck offline. But I just got to play the game online for the first time about a month ago and had an absolute blast, I definitely agree that it was ahead of its time. There's a whole lot of fun ideas. I probably would've loved it if I was able to play online when it came out. RE Outbreak was another game I felt similarly about too

@@lutherheggs451unbelievably bad take. It had 3 main line titles for the PS One. There aren’t “100 titles” that did it better at the time-hell there aren’t even 10. Yes, the games controls were rough but that was normal for the time (Resident Evil tank controls being one example). No one is saying we need Syphon Filter 15 but Sony bringing it back with an all new storyline would be great.

@@TitaniumTurbine i back everything Titanium said. By modern standards it might not look much but as a kid this game was amazing, it pushed all the boundaries for its time and its multiplayer was pretty fun. I never got to play 3 (the first 2 was owned by my older brothers and i got out of video games for a bit at the time) but yeah, great series. It's sad seeing how many great games like this used to exist and now we had a market which sucks pretty badly.

The fact that they decided to launch the last title on PS1 rather than PS2 to honor the original fans is crazy by today's standards...fast forward a few years and Sony did not care as much considering God of War 2 and 3 launched on different generations, and now such goodwill gesture would be completely unimaginable...things have definitely changed. Great video!

Guys, get parts 1-3 on PS4. The PSP ports, however, have glitchy controls. Relive your childhood. The controls and visuals are smoother. This series was well-written, produced and featured fantastic music. Perhaps Gabe can return in a semi-open world format, or a single player campaign with depth and some open-ended scenarios. Precision was the developers' strength. It's not over yet.

Speaking as a speedrunner of the PS1 games, thank you for this retrospective. It's very well done. It's a shame the series never got a proper finish after Logan's Shadow. The creative burnout and the dismal Omega Strain really ensured this series would never become more than an odd curio in the PS1's history. It deserves better than that. It's not as good, fundamentally, as MGS or Splinter Cell, but there are some good ideas and concepts throughout and it's a credible spy action series. The original, 25 years later, holds up very well top to bottom and I think is one of the 20 best PS1 games overall. It has been lost to history, alas, and in a way other franchises that didn't really survive past the PS1/PS2 era didn't. But then history is strange that way.

Hey there! I'm not sure if you were looking at the PSRewired server before the Omega Strain online gameplay, but I saw you online getting this footage, and was trying to figure out if was this channel. Cool to see you guys did a Rise and Fall on this series, and hopefully it sheds some more light on TOS. On top of that, I manage a small server with a deal of dedicated players to the Omega Strain online community, and would love to see you play more or even if anyone else would like to join up, you're more than welcome. Great video and hope you enjoyed your time!

According to Jim Ryan, the game wasn't a success because it didn't get a 90 on metacritic despite its strong sales. And the reason why it didn't get a 90 because the game wasn't woke enough.

I freaking love Syphon Filter. Whenever someone asks what remaster, remake or game to be brought back from the dead I always say Syphon Filter. Before I ever played SF I didn't like the look of it because I thought it was just a MGS rip-off. But then I tried the demo and beat it a bunch of times. I ended up absolutely loving it. You showed another videogame I love, Apocalypse.

Was hoping you guys would get around to this series, and it delievered in all the ways I've come to expect of this channel - top work. Only two things that I thought were worth mentioning and got glossed over was the attempt at a SF graphic novel that never materialized beyond a few preview pages, and Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, a PSN exclusive map-maker/online only title that used the multiplayer of the PSP titles as a framework.

That ending was delightful. Thank you for your outstanding work on this forgotten and underated master piece that was Syphon Filter. To this day, I still play the original game at least once a year, on my original CD from back in the days wich I got a bit later on after its release on my 13th birthday. Salutations du Québec!

Sony should remake Syphon Filter. They have such an amazing property in their Hand and don't use it... Syphon Filter 2 and this damn Sniper passage costed me and two of my best friends back then half a night until i finally did it. After that i fully played through SF2 and it was one of the best experiences in my life and made me want to learn russian from that prison scene alone. If only Sony heard our cries for a new game.

I think Syphon Filter is one of those games that would benefit from a modern day reboot. As much as I'd love a sequel, I feel too much time has passed for one now. Same with Splinter Cell. I think the best course of action is to reboot them. Keep the same story and gameplay, the same missions and characters, but expand on them and make them longer with more missions, things like that.
