I remember needing to stick a matchbox or comb or some thin object between the eight track cartridge and the player when the alignment was a little off between the heads and the tape.

An 8-track was hardly playing "uninterrupted" music when it chopped a song in half in order to fit the format.

8 tracks are 'cartridges'.... cassettes are cassettes

So what exactly is a cassette then?
@That_AMC_Guy

@@philippusviridi6527 A cassette is like the name implies, a small "case". It is a case that holds a very small reel to reel tape. A cartridge is loaded and spent. I was about to make this very point - I'm not even 30 seconds in - but I noticed somebody else beat me to the punch.

😫 after reading the comment I then realised I'd made that mistake. of course i meant to say cartridge. I'd written it correctly in the script then said wrong on the recording.🙁

@@That_AMC_Guy the term cassette is a recording format. No different than a eight track tape or a VHS tape

i remember the 8-track tape as a kid back in the late 70's & early 80's. i do remember going into a music store as a kid & seeing the 8-tracks behind a plastic shield with a hole cut into them you pick the one want & place it on a converter belt & a casher flip a switch & the 8-track go's Strat to them & they open a door then you can pay for it. i think they were $5 at the time

Transistor radios. Portable record players. 8-Track players in cars. Sony Walkman. Portable CD players. MP3 players. Phones. Every generation had its new innovation in portable music, and most disappear. But we don't get where we are without what came before.

Eight track had 4 channel selection. Each channel had two audio tracks for left and right stereo. That is why it is called 8 track and not 8 channel.

8-Tracks was the first medium that allowed drivers to choose their music instead of submitting to arbitrarily chosen music from a radio station.

I still own over one hundred 8 track cartridges and three 8 track players to play them on and they all still work. Lol

If the tape became too tight, it would distort the music, the foam pressure pads disintegrated quickly, let's not talk about the tape wrapping around the capstan, the constant music fade between tracks, constant adjustment of the tape head, the adhesive letting lose on the adhesion tape. So long, not missed.

The option list when buying a new car. Am , am/fm and the option of the factory 8 track player. Did buy one from radio shack in The early 80s.

8 tracks also had to change tracks and usually right in the middle of a song. Sound quality was not that great but it was portable. When cassettes took off (which had much better sound quality) the 8 tracks days were numbered.
@stevenrobinson2381
@stevenrobinson2381 Ай бұрын
Actually-8 track tapes had initially better sound quality due to their higher running speed-3 3/4 IPS versus 1 7/8 IPS for cassette. The track break in the middle of songs did make the 8 track "clunky" in operation-as did the endless loop.

Now only vinyls survived wgile still playable. Anything tapes when played today mostly have bad sounds or almost erased. And vinyls are mostly just played by afficionados. Nowadays younger generation download music to their cellphones or play from the internet via sites like KZbin.

I had one in my Voxel Velox in the late 70's, it was the closest thing to listening to a record, then came smaller cassettes, not as good.

Some albums were mixed specifically for quad and were put on 8 track. Some of these mixes sound better than the original mixes. Example: John Lennon said he personally supervised the quad mix of “walls and bridges” album to be put on 8 track. I’ve listen to uploads from the 8 track….that album sounds amazing. Better than the stereo mix tho it the mix that better not the format. The format does add something tho, deeper lows maybe and smoother highs. I’ve compared both WB albums and the 8 track is it.

The 8 track cartridge may have been designed and produced in 1964, it would however not go on sale to the public until roughly the summer of 1965. Ford would be the first to offer a car player beginning in the 1966 model year (so, for sake of argument it was introduced in the fall of 1965).

I did not like the 8-track tape! I had to listen to a lot of songs I hated or pass over songs I loved. Also if it was a lengthy great song the tape would cut to the next track, making it annoying!
