In this case, burning the library may well be what preserved it! Clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia were not traditionally fired, so being subjected to such a fire actually made them more durable and likely to survive for millennia. Later libraries would suffer much more greatly, since their texts were on paper or parchment.

Assyrians dont exist anymore. The persians demolished and made them go extinct. More than 2000 years ago. So whatever was left of their ppl, language and culture got lost with the extinction. Its Historical facts. The ppl of today who call themselves "Assyrians" are actually Syriac arameans. They are not assyrians. They themselves identified as arameans until beginning of last century when there was a power conflict within the syriac aramaic church which made some ppl want to exclude themselves from the church and from their own identity. How? By renaming themselves Assyrians so they would seclude themselves as far as possible from and remove all ties with the Jacobite Syriac aramaic church. However this renaming is weird and wrong. You cant just claim a name that belongs to someone else...and this is a fake rebirth of the Assyrian name 2000 years after the extinction of Assyrians...hope this clarified. The ppl calling themselved Assyrians are not the real assyrians of history.

the problem is: almost nobody is really interested in that. the mass of the people don't even know that Assyria existed. The best chance to see Assyria on the big screen was Will Smiths plan for a movie about the pharaoh Taharqa. But it remained a project only.

I think a major problem is the casting. Like Gods of Egypt, 300, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Clash of the Titans, Cleopatra, or The Immortals? What’s with all the American and British actors? 🤷‍♂️ It’s very rare to see a historical film with actors that are casted that actually look like the people they’re portraying. Usually investors don’t want to gamble their money on a movie they think audiences won’t watch. I think they should give it a go and see what happens, but I’m alone on that one.

@Faris Fasil They are literally the same people just different identity. Babylonian came after Assyrian Empire fell, and Akkadians are people who preceded Assyrians. There are Assyrians today who still read and write Sumerian cuneiform, and Akkadian tribe was part of Sumerian civilization before they revolted to create Akkadian Empire. Go to Iraq and Syria and ask anyone who the original people are, they will tell you its Assyrian. How come they know this, and you dont?

Good eye, MorfeoRenaissance! Romans eventually phased out using the phalanx, but from the founding of their city-state until the close of the 2nd century BC, the Romans found the Greek-style phalanx suitable for fighting in the plains of Latium. (Before they transitioned to the more well known legion). Love finding history buffs here in the comments! :)

TED-Ed The sarissa was never used by the kingdom of Rome. Well, at least it wasn't widely used since there are only two (I could be mistaken but meh) Roman sarissas in the whole Latium dated before 300aC. On the contrary there are many archeological findings, near Tursculum and Tuscia, that show us spears and oval Etruscan shields in use by the Roman warbands. Tldr: were there roman warbands that used sarissas? Maybe. I wouldn't bet on it. Was that common? Nah. But the original point is: what is the point of showing "roman phalanxes" when Rome is worldwide famous to this day for the legions? It was just a writing error, that's all. No need to justify it.

@@Lucas-yf1es That's completely wrong. The bronze age began in 3300 BC. The first iron swords were made in 1200 BC. Thats 2100 years between. 1945 was the date the first nuclear weapon made. It took 3145+ years to go from iron swords to nuclear weapons.

He , Professor Paolo Menozzi and Alberto Piazza spent 8 years collecting data for their study on the genetics of almost 2 thousand entries. Their analysis shows that the Assyrians as a people represent a unique genetic profile that distinguished them from other peoples. Jessica S Assyrians were pagan during their time and they still existed after their empire collapsed, they weren't wiped out as many would think. Assyrians were one of the first people to convert to Christianity and still practice it to this day.

I wonder why every time a empire disintegrated, the collective knowledge always get destroys in part or completely? Every time there an civil war or peasant revolt, the library (and the palace) always get sacks and the works and knowledge of an entire empire for hundred of years get wipe out. Is this why it takes so long for mankind to grow out of the early state of human civilization?

My theory is that part of it is from within. A desire that no one get what "we had" without earning it. Usually the invader is stronger but not smarter than the invaded, so people without the knowledge of the ancients, but that they had a grand empire might ask some who remain and have preserved a fraction of what was lost to lead. Then there the is the factor of religious texts and documents on other forms of government being present in those libraries, a dangerous thing to those who hold power. If people can read these things and learn on there own another way, then the leaders they have now could be toppled. A monarchy is only secure if the King is the only one who knows how to throw it down. Then there is the factor of location, many libraries were built along walls and when the walls went, well there goes the library. In a desire to win, well they just kept going and didn't bother to pick the books back up or read them. Which is why several ancient texts were literally found to be stomped on.

It's not necessarily that it's all destroyed. Likely much of it was taken during the sacking and sold to others. But we just don't have records of those works remaining today. This was likely made more likely that knowledge would be lost due to the fact that few people knew how to read or write and materials to do so was quite expensive.

This is why we lost more knowledge than we ever had, because wars destroy everything for resources and people for power, though the knowledge from generations before pass on to us is eliminated I assume is to keep us in fragile state not to revolt. Opposed rise to oppressors, winners right history, the strong devour weak, endless cycle have we not learned from history. We keep making same mistakes me learn very little and call it something different though it may look, sound, feel better, does not make it true. Humanity will be free of mind body and spirit once we end wars, borders, oppression, slavery, gender inequality, status and value of life.

I genuinely appreciate the work you do. In your channel I've found a huge historical cultural and literery sources of information. I would like to offer you something, we live in a country that has huge history culture literature and religion and my country is Armenia in fact there's a fascinating legend about the queen Semiramis and ancient Armenian king Ara. I just need to emphasize that Armenia was the first country to make christianity an official language in 301 AD. It would be really plesent to see an animation about Armenia)

To my understanding, the collapse of the Assyrian empire came as a result of their lack of stability. Throughout its existence, Assyria was plagued with constant revolts from the conquered populations of the empire. Moving them around helped, but couldn’t ultimately couldn’t stop the onslaught of armed dissidents. The best way I’ve heard it put is “the subjects never ceased to be foes of their masters”. In the end they were conquered by the medians and the Babylonians who rebelled from them. The Babylonian empire took the reigns, but fell for the same reason Assyria did. When Babylon was conquered, even the Babylonian citizens welcomed their conquerors.

جيمر Gamer It is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where there is a powerful wizard (if I remember right) guarding a bridge who asks 3 questions to allow people to pass in their quest to find the Holy Grail. One of the knights in the entourage of Arthur confidently answers the first 2 questions, but is comedically cast to his doom after failing to answer the third. Edit: there are also 3 possible capitals of Assyria that I know of, the question wasn’t good in the first place as he did not specify which reign or time period. The answer could be any of Ashur, Nineveh or Dur-Sharrukin, probably more I don’t know of.

Interesting video, I liked how it illustrates key features of the Assyrian civilization that I didn't know about. There is something you got wrong in this video: when you mentioned Rome, you showed the Macedonian army. The main characteristic of the Macedonian army were the long spears and round shields.

+R Wixel Barnwell The Romans did indeed use the phalanx system, but not for long, and not in the way which is pictured (which is most definitely the Macedonian phalanx with their unique and exclusive use of the incredibly long sarissa spear).

Your history? After thousands of years, no one can tell who's who after thousands of years of blood mixing. People know a few about Assyrians because their is not much to say about them. They did nothing of value. People know about Hammurabi of Babylonian Kingdom for his contributions to law but nothing about so called Assyrians. Many commentators are delusional and look for something to be proud of because their lives are miserable. Academics including John Joseph, largely reject the modern Assyrian claim of descent from the ancient Assyrians of Mesopotamia, and their succeeding the Sumero-Akkadians and the Babylonians as one continuous civilization.' He criticizes modern Assyrian writers who "eager to establish a link between themselves and the ancient Assyrians. Its just nuts.

2:53 When I look at these guys I get kind of sad. These guys held very important roles for their kingdom and were perhaps famous amongst their people. Yet they are essentially forgotten in time as we don't recall such names often. Even the greatest kings in history are going to be lost to time somehow. For example, you did not wake up thinking about Alexander the Great. I think that history is beautiful but how can I be inspired to make a change to the human race if I simply will be forgotten??
