Correction: I was supposed to say sold for 10% of what Microsoft offered not 1%.
Yahoo! was once one of the most valuable companies on earth, recently they've crashed and burned. The big question is what happened?

Google much like Facebook stuck with a simple website which means faster on pretty any kind of device which was connected to the internet and as the raise of mobile devices this is very important, whereby Yahoo kept changing, much like Ask, Lycos and many other sites, which they added more and more in their sites in comparison.

Actually that's not quite it. As an avid Yahoo user back in their golden time, Yahoo used to out Google Google. But just like AOL and MySpace did, they rested on their laurels and kept thinking in normal industry and retail standards. You have a YEAR buffer, maybe two years if you are lucky, before a hungry company can catch up with you and surpass you. Comcast cable and AT&T DSL overtook AOL, Facebook killed MySpace, and Google aborted Yahoo. That's what happens when you are stagnant and unwilling to change.

Mayer took Flickr and destroyed it. I'm a photographer and Flickr was a great community. Four years ago Yahoo made major changes to Flickr which completely ignored what the community wants. The attitude towards users was arrogant and dismissive. Mayer had the gaul to statw that 'there is no such thing as a professional photographer'. All Yahoo had to do was listen to what everyone wanted and provide it. It really was that simple, but they always thought that they knew better. They got what they deserve and I'm delighted to see the demise of Mayer!

I can tell you what happened to Yahoo without even watching this. I and many others used to love Yahoo, especially the chat rooms. And then they stopped caring. The place was overrun by bots. IT WAS INSANE. You just couldn't get rid of them. One day in the late 2000's there was a bot in the chatroom complaining about the bots. "ugh, so many bots in here! 19/f" - It was at that point I realized Yahoo just stopped caring. I realized they didn't care to streamline their email service - as Google was fast and not so damn cluttered. Yahoo wanted to be a mess for some reason, and I will never understand why. Myspace did this too. To this day both websites are a cluttered disaster. With Yahoo being a cesspool of clutter and a gigantic ad taking up the entire page on entry (as of today, 2/5) and Myspace being a complete clusterfuck of BS music, music, and more music. Myspace decided there was nothing in the social media world and no money to be made apparently. Both of these sites decided to be messy for some reason and not care about what the users actually wanted. I will never understand. Yahoo made itself into a complete travesty especially. They had YAHOO CHAT - Where people could video call. Imagine if they utilized the millions of users instead of allowing skype to take over? But no, they decided to keep the quality of webcam access minimal. Even on a fast connection in 2007, they did not always allow the "super webcam" option and although I and my friend had very fast internet and new webcams, the image quality looked like it was taken on a 56k modem still, then beamed to antarctica during an earthquake while a mad scientist quickly and hastily breaks down the code and writes it on floppy disks, then uploads to a commodore 64 and sends the images to a hut in nigeria during a meteor strike, where it is converted to smoke signal back to the united states and an indian that speaks spanish converts it to binary again and uploads to the internet on 14.4k, where its downloaded outside in a blizzard in milwaukee, filmed on VHS, sent by mule to the yahoo HQ server, where a bot that has taken over part of the company uses photoshop 6 from 2002 to blur the image, then sends it to a 1st grade classroom where children draw the images by hand and then scan it into an old macintosh that can barely play oregon trail, using a scanner from 1994, then each frame printed on dot matrix and sold to a nigerian scammer as where he promises a large sum of money for it - and then he sells the images to a museum claming they are rare paintings, which are confiscated by INTERPOL and sent back to the US by a pidgeon during a hurricane, to the CIA headquarters where it is again split into multiple files, blurred, reimaged and reprinted by dot matrix, filmed onto BETAMAX, then sent to the end user after being printed on dot matrix again and then they must upload it to their computer, but only after they click on the ads the bots were able to sneak into the code, and only if they could stop getting booted by other users that downloaded free software anywhere online to mess with them because yahoo had no security either. You would think that Yahoo! would have developed a group to correct spelling and grammar for topic issues, instead of letting all those posters continue such grammatical mistakes. Just like a resume, any spelling mistake or poor grammar on your website or posting proves that no one will take you seriously. By the way, I would like to order a tasty Pregante dinner! I think it's somewhat unfair to call Marissa Mayer a bad CEO as she inherited a company which was already in shambles when she arrived. It's rather the lack of strategic focus of the board and the history of the company that signified the dawnfall of Yahoo.

She didn't want to run a tech company. She cut her teeth working on development and had a degree in CS but it's pretty clear she wasn't a techie at heart and didn't have great business sense about the direction of tech. She did a masters in CS, but it was in a wonky mathematically area of CS that suited what she was doing a Google but probably not so well suited to managing a company. The stories that came out about her egotistical way of working with subordinates are pretty "bad" in my opinion.

My favorite part of yahoo used to be their chat rooms. Back in 2000 to 2008..its was a great alternative to AOL chatrooms mainly because you couldn't get reported and banned for hurting someone's Internet feelings. Only downside was the script kiddies booting the whole room. Chat rooms were pretty fun. Way better than the type of social networking we get these days from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

I've had a Yahoo email address since 1998 and used the chat rooms for years until the bots completely took over. Some time in the early 2000s Yahoo flat out said they didn't care to maintain the service anymore no matter how popular they still were and shut it down in 2007. I still have the email address, but only use it for things that I'm sure will generate spam.

I've been a Yahoo user since 1997. I went to them for web email. This was before gMail. The downfall of Yahoo was Yahoo Maps. Yahoo Maps was originally comparable to Google Maps. Then Yahoo came out with a fancy new release of Maps. But this required fast internet at a time when many users were still using dial up. The new Maps failed. Yahoo went back to its earlier version of Maps but it was too late. Most users simply went over to Google Maps. It case you didn't realize it, maps is actually the center jewel of a web portal. With maps comes search and locate. The big revenue comes from selling advertising associated with maps. For example, seeing all the McDonald's icons pop up for a given location. Or all the pizza restaurants in an area. Maps is like the Yellow Pages of the phone book days. Yellow Pages were pure advertising revenue for the phone companies. After Yahoo cancelled its maps program, it later cancelled its travel program. There were other cancellations too. These programs fell like dominos. I believe most of this traffic went over to Google as well.

0:21 "it seems like a lot of people haven't actually been getting notifications" Please, don't say it like that suddenly turned out to be an unpleasant surprise for everyone. People don't need notifications for most of the channels, that's why they are an optional feature turned off by default. I am subscribed and, obviously, like this channel, and yes, I understand how KZbin rating system changed recently and made it more difficult for your work to pay off, but please keep it honest. Selling the notifications like a no-brainer is quite dishonorable. Just for an example, I, myself, am quite a seasoned KZbin content consumer and have probably already subscribed to several hundred channels over the course of the whole KZbin history - the notifications used to work a bit different in the early years and they had a full reset on it for the sake of users, but if I turned notifications for every channel I'm subscribed to now - I would be overwhelmed by notifications and they would lose their whole purpose. KZbin has solved the discovery problem in a different way now and if I'm subscribed to some channel, not avoiding Google tracking like a paranoid freak and am at the moment interested in one of the topics a channel I'm subscribed to is focusing on - their video will appear either in the "related" column to the right(even if it is not in fact related to the video I'm watching) or be placed on my personal front page which I visit every time I'm unsure what to watch next. The bottom line you could use honestly is: "Turn notifications on if you want to be notified of new uploads by this channel."

I disagree with most of the video. The reason Yahoo failed was that they ignored their users over and over again. They kept trying to fix what wasn't broken, making it broken. It was a great place to meet people and have fun. They were ahead of their time with the technology they had. Before skype you had voip calling with messenger. You could video chat with messenger, etc. You could browse and meet friends that shared the same interest and add them to your friends list and chat with them on messenger. People still used there service even along side of myspace and facebook because you couldn't video chat with people on there and simply they had the best messenger. A lot of people used chat back in the day but eventually bots joined the rooms and took it over. It took yahoo forever to try and fix it. What they did to fix it was make users enter captcha code before entering chat. This worked shortly after for just a bit. The problem was that all was needed was a human log a bot in with the captcha and then they could walk away leaving their bot to bother users. Instead all that was needed was code which allowed a percentage of a room to boot a user suspected of being a bot. Say once five people click a username as a bot it autoboots them out of room. Problem solved with bots right there. But Yahoo gave up, bots plagued the rooms and advertisers left. Eventually they closed the rooms. They came out with 360 profiles which to me seemed okay to go along side with your basic profile if you wanted to use it. They had this while they had chat too I think so this isn't a perfect timeline by me. They got rid of it when it was actually catching on. The next thing they screwed up was the profiles. You had a simple profile which you would put in your interests and could meet people of the same if you wanted to by setting it up on your profile. They had a member directory search. Anybody that didn't want to be searched could set their profile to private. Well, yahoo completely did away with their member search. So now at this point you are left with a basic profile and no chat and no way to search for new friends. Well, then they go and screw with your profile several times over trying to make it look like a facebook or myspace profile trying to be like them, with the only exception you have no way to meet anybody you have to add people you already know by giving them your yahoo id. Useless. There was no point whatsover in having yahoo at all by now. So millions just left. There is so much other stuff I'm leaving out that was stupid such as closing yahoo groups, geocities, etc. but I've explained the main point. All this that was done by Yahoo was done while their users were screaming at them to stop. So I hope other companies learn from this. Don't take away stuff that is working trying to do something you think is better that you think your users want even though they tell you "no we don't want this". They wanted chat fixed and not gone. Wanted their profiles left alone and wanted it to stay functional, no purpose in a profile if nobody can see it. Yahoo ignored the people who matter most, its users.

I dont know why but there is sad trend of giant companies-ish hiring CEOs to turn things around but then still end up flopping. Does anyone know names of CEOs or notable leaders that turned companies around to the right direction right before the company entered a sort of crisis or was experiencing a crisis. My example would be Steve Jobs, how about others?

Yahoo messenger and it's chat room was my favorite it opened a whole new way of connecting people across globe, it also helped me get my first blind date back in 2004 when I was merely 17. They failed because they didn't innovate with time. I still remember as I was called for giving feedback on their mobile website at their office in Mumbai while using my Nokia 3230 it was some wonderful time nostalgic 😌

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die". BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again". And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. If you have any questions let me know

Honestly the biggest fall of yahoo, I would say was more so google drive. Google drive was a genius feature because Microsoft was becoming more and more greedy. To the point most student's coulden't even afford microsoft word anymore and it's other features. But google made their own versions from power points, to writers programs, to spread sheets completely for free. Than to make it better you could work side by side with a partner as long as they had the link towards your application. when I was in the 12 grade which was five years ago, my constant use of google drive made me stop going to yahoo all together. To put it short, Google wasn't just being a search engine, they were creating useful and reliable tools for their growing audience base to use. Yahoo thought they could survive by being a search engine and nothing more.
