Carlos Burle and Jamie Mitchell chat about the ascension of Brazil's first female big-wave surfer.

“She’s very focused on everything she does in her life, especially when it comes to big-wave surfing,” Carlos Burle explains of her controversial female protege, Maya Gabeira, who nearly died at Nazare in 2013. “And we got a lot of crap from the community. That hurt her a lot. It hurt me, too… A lot of judgment, which is normal. It’s okay. But we didn’t give up.”
“Everything we did together was a long way,” he adds. “It wasn’t easy at all. We had a lot of badmouthing from all over the place… On the other hand, we were breaking a lot of prejudices, we were pushing the boundaries for big-wave surfing for girls. And we were opening a lot of doors. So, that was giving me a lot of energy and motivation.”

Never seen this girl ride a wave without a tow. She didn’t look qualified to ride those waves. Now I look back and realize hey even if she wasn’t the best and didn’t deserve the pay checks she was getting. She made it. She’s got a nice house and she’s set for life. FIRST and foremost, surfing is supposed to be decentralized and PERMISSIONLESS! It is in cases like these that our so-called community shows how dogmatic and feudal it actually is. Speaking of qualification, Maya is the most hard working pro surfer I've ever seen in my whole life (including Adriano or Taylor Knox), she is more physically and mentally prepared for a 50ft towed ride and its eventual punishment than most guys paddling at 20ft Mavs simply because its a different skillset she heavily invested in. One could say its a less nature and more nurture skill, or even a skill you can almost buy, but so what??? Lucas and Kai Lenny can air reverse on knee high waves, while I believe Greg Long or Makua cannot. How is that relevant to "earn" a spot on the big wave scene?? "Skills" can mean way different things, dogma ignores that. Pipeline kills more people than big waves, so should we ask kids to outperform everyone else at Rocky Point before supporting them paddling out there? Too many Hawaiian pros would be out of job too. So why paddling achievements is a must to what she does? Just because it was the traditional route others took? Carlos did right! I wouldn't recognize any sort of "peer review" acceptance either because criteria is clearly tribal, which is sad because security these days of Instagram is a real issue and that should apply to EVERYONE. To me, if one is a "skier" more than a surf sensei, that don't matter! Maybe Kelly had a point in 2010 but while Laird Hamilton and fans kept talking crap on them (as if Laird himself never behave commercially), she was paying decade-long dues and nowadays she is way less likely to put herself and others in trouble out there than any talented QS surfer being a tourist on big waves. So if that doesn't teach us anything I don't know what will. Btw, the kind of waves she got smoked make as much distinction between her or Kelly Slater as covid-19 virus would do.

How many times does Carlos need to mention Maya's looks? What does her being beautiful have anything to do with surfing? Talking about how her good looks and perfect English make her a perfect product to sell is disgusting.

She went way down on my respect meter when she blamed Carlos Burle for her near death wipeout at Nazare'. She implied that he "pressured" her and was not "prepared". When you're at this level you are completely responsible for all the decisions you make regardless of input from others or your personal gender. If she wants the glory she has to take full responsibility for any consequences she suffers chasing it.
