Join us for a look at the complete history of Sheffield’s iconic Tinsley towers. From their beginning as part of a wider complex to being isolated and surrounded by a modern Sheffield.
The towers were demolished in 2008 much to the upset of many residents of not just Sheffield, but the whole of Northern England.

People should mourn, as these Cooling Towers are becoming a thing of the past. As a Truck Driver, until recently travelling the length and breadth of Britain, I have seen their gradual decline and removal to the point there are few left. Once hundreds now probably less than 30 and as redundant Power Stations are demolished these few will disappear also. I found the reasons for refusing listed status quite sad. What does it matter if the internals, and other associated structures, had been removed it was the Iconic nature of the Towers that made them worth saving. In reality I suspect it was Dollar Signs that spelt their death!

I still remember them, living in Tinsley, such a pity (to my memories) of them being knocked down, the towers sure did show out from a distance. I remember the motorway being built, cutting streets in half, shops closing, works closing and being demolished, ah well, I suppose they call it progress, I call it a shame.

I remember them coming down. My friend rang me up to ask if I wanted to go watch from meadowhall carpark. I was about 2 hours away and I'd had a drink so decided to pass. I always regretted not making the effort to get there. It was sad as it was another end in British manufacturing. Something that, with the labours of millions built the country and shaped the world. The uk really does seem like an empty shell in comparison to what it was.

They should never have demolished them! They, along with the ones at Ferrybridge on the A1, were the signs that you were safely back in Yorkshire.

So do you know what the plans are for the site now? I am presuming that the Blackburn Meadows water treatment plant is still there? I haven’t lived in Sheffield for 20 odd years, so I’m a little out of touch. Once again, a great video - excellently researched and narrated.

The water treatment plant is still there. Believe it or not E.On actually built a power station on the site, albeit far more greener than its predecessor (I believe it burns wood chips?)

TINSLEY TOTTER Gravity telepaths. Rotund towers, dark swathed. Jelly babies, jellied. Static tramps. Rubber stamped. Jelly stomped. Watchers, jelly-bellied, distant. Time's rent to pay. The final day. Funeral for eyesore friends. Jelly men cool. jelly men rule. Like the death of your dad, pit pony sad.
