FFTL was my favorite band for many years and is till up there. It's honestly sad how forgotten they are considering like you said, they were huge. And arguably the sounds they played with ended up being more influential overtime. They deserve way more credit than a lot of other bands get from that era. Same with Aiden, The Chariot, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Matchbook Romance. Just seems like everyone forgot about the mall goth era when late 2000s scene took over.

Sonny Moore is by far one of my favourite vocalists of this genre. From his slight lisp and the raspiness of his voice to his lyricism in Heroine… I was gutted when he left the band, but I enjoyed seeing FFTL play their self titled album when they opened for Deftones in 2007. Matt fell off the stage and hurt his finger and his guitar got bloody while he strummed until the song ended. Metal af

@sonsique Жыл бұрын
@@graymadsThey were working on an EP and we don’t know everything that happened, but something bad happened at Emo Night/before a show and shit fell apart It was presumed to be made up of Make War, Surrender, and Veins, but Veins ended up turning into a collab with Shinigami (at least that is the current theory, since it has a mix between that poppy style of Make War and Surrender as well as some of the instrumental style of Dear Diary.) Due to Sonny being busy (or in some people’s opinion, playing the absolute shit out of the band for clout during a dry period in his career, although I don’t see him doing that.) A lot of people also think Deltitnu, House Party In A Hostage Crisis, and Last Chance To Survive (by Matt Good) were planned for this EP, but it’s very unlikely since Matt says these songs were written in 2020. Even though Sonny is gone, the band (and the members) have been teasing a “Throne To The Wolves Part II” on Twitter, mentioning the prospect of it early last year. FFTL may not be fully laid to rest. It deserves to go out with a bang, as opposed to the 2 singles and 1 collab song we got. Something happened between Sonny and the boys, either he bailed on a show due to his busy schedule or just couldn’t make it work for one reason or another, and the band has been wanting to get a record out for 5 years but is too afraid to get more backlash after Sonny only came back for 2 songs.

It's probably not integral to the story of how the band started but the reason they were looking for a guitarist and recruited Sonny is because Travis actually broke both of his arms while riding a skateboard and barrelling into a wall. I don't remember where he said it anymore but it was some interview. Then they heard Sonny sing the backing vocals in the studio and decided to put him on vocal. By then most of Dear Diary was written by Matt so yea Sonny's lyrics are Emily and Boxer on that album. Also probably it deserved to be mentioned in this video as well - the show in the very early era of the band with Sonny where he performed with blood running down his face from the broken nose which some guy broke 30mins before FFTL performance and he refused to let it stop him from singing. I think it was Warped tour, the video was on youtube. This injury, which was never properly treated and caused his nose to heal wrong, caused his later vocal issues (due to him being unable to breathe through his nose and only thorugh his mouth, putting strain on his vocal chords) which eventually lead him to leaving the band and even later getting nose surgery after 3 previous vocal surgeries. He also said after the surgery that he never actually learned how to sing properly since his start as the band's vocalist was so quick and there was never time for him to learn any techniques and his screaming was done always in a way that was damaging him further. I want to mention something most people don't know and highlight just how generous and incredibly caring to their fans FFTL always were. In 2008, after the release of self-titled, the band announced tour dates in EU and back then I contacted our local promoter in a futile hope of him trying to secure a date for Prague. He did and the band agreed to become the last addition to a show along with Silverstein. The most amazing part of it is that they did this show for almost no fee at all, simply because they've never been to Prague and wanted to visit. They had the best time here, we hung out with them after the show and they were the nicest guys ever and basically did this show for a city tour and dinner after concert by the promoter. Second thing I want to add is that despite the kickstarter long-winded path with Dead Trees, year-long silence, line-up changes and everything, they committed to delivering that album to everyone who supported it. Even though the lowest support tiers were originally only for digital download only, they shipped the physical copies of the album even to them all over the world. So, thank you for this video, bringing awareness back to them because honestly they were one of the pillars of the emo/post-hardcore scene in the 00's and deserve all the recognition. I still consider them as one of the top favorite bands in my life. Hopefully we will hear from them again at some point.
@loompy14402 жыл бұрын
Dude I had no idea about practically any of this! The line up changes, the meaning behind some of the lyrics I’ve been listening to for years! Matt Good’s absolute unwavering tenacity all of those years. erm yeah thank you for making this. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who fondly remembers this band and thinks that they really did something innovative and special. As far as I know they were the first to do the helium vocal post hardcore with pop punk sensibilities. It makes sense that one of the members ended up in human abstract that’s also one of my fave bands. I hope Matt is capitalizing on this revival right now 🤔

It's interesting how history works. For those interested, Matt Manning was in a hardcore band called Nor Am I, before he joined FFTL. I was also in that band (as the singer) and I had connections with people who knew FFTL, and brought the band down to that area, where Matt became friends with them while Nor Am I was still a thing. Our drummer had just left to pursue school, and we were looking for a new one, and before I had joined Nor Am I, I tried out for another band called "The Last Try" which consisted of drummer Jake Bundrick (Mayday Parade) and Blake Steiner. I ended up joining Nor Am I instead, and when our drummer departed, we talked to Jake about playin drums for us. He even came to a tryout, but ultimately did not end up playing with us, but in doing that.. the rest of the band (including Matt Manning) got to know both Jake and Blake Steiner.... Of course Matt would end up in FFTL shortly after our band split, and he recruited Blake later. I didn't end up playing in any notable bands after that (sadly) but it's fun to think about sometimes, (and they probably don't even remember it) had I not joined Nor Am I, they likely would have never crossed paths, and this musical history lesson might be very different.

I went to a family reunion around 2004 and saw family members I hadn’t seen in over a decade, or at all. They learned I could play guitar and someone brought one out to ask me for a song. I had just learned minuet so I decided to play that song. All the elderly people and adults loved it. But the one girl my age just looked at me from across the deck judging me. Judging hard. Hahaha

I love your vids. Music/aesthetic nostalgia is is my jam. Plz do a vid on Darude-Sandstorm and how it was the soundtrack to the millennium

@@graymads it’s sad there are no vids that talk about the aesthetic and culturally effect of that song.

Dead Baby Kickball (Hidden Track) on Dear Diary, was actually 5 minutes lmao. The Beau Burchell remaster from 2005 (yes Saosin Beau.) was what cut it down to 3… I honestly prefer the Lee Dyess mix of the album from 2004. Alot of songs got cut down on Beau’s mix.

“Throne to the Wolves is their second best outing, behind Heroine” Finally. That album was so much better than it got credit for. Those first four albums have always been close to my heart. There’s also been no other band I’ve followed as closely, which was a roller coaster for a fan. The abuse they took from fans after Sonny left was horrible, Myspace briefly filled up with stuff like “you guys suck without Sonny”. Every time I think of that I think about how Throne was basically the soundtrack to my life for that year. The Color of Violence was also one of my all-time favorite hardcore records. The surf rock style and humor made it an iconic album for me.
