For a while, it looked like Europe was headed down a distinctly right-wing path, with center-right candidates winning elections across the continent and the moderate left (the so-called Social Democrats) on the decline. However, these trends seem to be changing. So in this video, we examine the fall and rise of the Social Democrats in Europe and what it tells us about Europe's political future.

It should be noted that the drop in prospective seats for the EPP is partly due to the Hungarian Party Fidesz being kicked out of the group, which lost them some ~20 seats. Still, even without those lost votes, the EPP was slowly moving down while the S&D are slowly trending upwards - just not nearly as fast as the video makes it out to be. Where the S&D is really shining right now is a resurgence on the popular vote, where they jumped up from just below 18% to almost 21%, taking the votes from other left-leaning parties (GUE/GNL and the European Greens) as well as the drop in independent parties. Those 3% don't seem like much, but since the height of the pandemic in July 2020 the EPP dropped by over 6% to just 19.5% and are still trending down. The other winners so far on the popular vote are the liberals, who gained about 2% and are back to the level of support from the last election in that regard - but compared to the back then, they're still projected to lose ~10 seats

The Left is on the rise in Ireland as well. Sinn Féin (Englishntranslation: We Ourselves) is absolutely dominating the polls and their party leader has a 50% approval rating. Sinn Féin has never been in power before due to controversial leaders who have been associated with the IRA, but their new leader, Mary Lou McDonald, has transformed the party and their support base and they won the election two years ago. A mishmash coalition of the two "Old Parties" and the Green Party held out against it, but SF's support is only increasing and it's likely the next Irish government will be lead by them.
@michealdehide1910
@michealdehide1910 2 жыл бұрын
Not entirely the full picture there. Sinn Féin as a party is both Left and Right. It's currently more Left-leaning populist (strong housing plans, while opposing wealth tax and secure pensions) in the south, while in the north it's Right-leaning establishment (supporting public service cuts, opposing a ban on fox hunting, opposition to abortion rights). Also Mary Loud McDonald's approval rating is about level with Leo Varadkar's as Fine Gael leader. Finally, Sinn Féin's ongoing surge in the opinion polls is more related to Sinn Féin being the largest non-Fine Gael, non-Fianna Fáil party. The research over the last two years shows that very few voters know what Sinn Féin's policies are and instead the message of "change" or "just something different" is what's driving Sinn Féin support. Reflecting that was the 2020 General Election, where the result saw a Sinn Féin surge, despite a generally poor election campaign by the party. The party didn't do anything special or new really, there was just a public spark for "change" and the lucky recipient for that drive was Sinn Féin. This all means that when Sinn Féin likely takes office after the next election, they'll need to delivery fast on all, or most, of their main promises, particularly on housing, or they'll be swept out of office just as fast as they were put into office by the electorate.

Sinn Féin is a reminder that you can be a left wing nationalist. In fact, they were the norm in the XIX century. Today natioanlism is associated mostly with the right, specially thanks to right wing populism, but people forget how nationalism (despite being easier to apply to right wing movements) doesnt mean its a right wing movement only.

You guys should do some videos on Romanian politics as well, it's a big EU country anyway. PSD is a social democratic party mostly in name. It combines some left aspects like helping some poor categories, with quite strong right wing religious, EU-skeptic, nationalist and populist messages. Between 2016 and 2020 it was pretty much a Trumpist party. Now it's calmed down more. Also, we had quite big crisis in politics in the last years, more dramatic than the ones in Sweden you've kept on covering, so it'd be great if you made some videos on those too. Additionally, they never "came back", they won almost all elections there have always been, rarely going below 30%.You have great channels and I follow them!! @@cgr_politica not really. They have a bit of leftist attitudes to some parts of the population, and otherwise a conservative attitude to social issues (pro religion, anti lgbt, a bit anti EU less than a few years ago, bombastic nationalism). However, these are all the slogan parts. In reality they usually only care about spending funds for their party's members and leaders and pretty much nothing else; it's probably the most corrupt party. And while Romania has had awful governments, the Nastase government was probably the most competent and actually did something, was fully PSD, but insanely corrupt, the only reason they built a lot was because they were trying to make us join NATO and EU (which we eventually did). Otherwise, PSD is more about painting a falling damaged house in nice colors, to make it look repaired, while the party steals. Doesn't mean other parties are much better, but they are the most corrupt and most successful at it long term. They are basically the rebranding of the former ultra powerful Communist party. And they were always powerful because they were the only ones who knew how to do politics after 45 years of Communism, plus they had all the state structures full with their guys. This somewhat still remains true today, only Communist doctrine was replaced by let's say an oligarchical group mentality. Hopefully I explained it fairly enough.

Let's put things straight. Current parties are not centre/left and neither are they social democratic. Those party are full centre with an occasional progressive attitude towards a few social issues. @@neodym5809 True, political analysis must take the situation of the relevant country into account. Is it perhaps more accurate to argue that it's simply the pre-pandamic political opposition that is on the rise in Europe, rather than Social Democracy specifically? It seems to me that many of the examples given here are countries where the center-left has been in opposition during the pandemic, which may more generally explain why they are gaining favour. Here in Denmark the center left has been in government during the pandemic, but its popularity has been steadily falling over the course of the pandemic despite handling it relatively well. I'm tempted to argue that maybe we're simply seeing that governments around Europe are losing support as the pandemic has raged on (regardless of how well they have handled it), and it just so happens to be the case that in many countries the opposition (or recently elected govourment) has been center-left. I'd also suggest watching Kraut's video on Social Democracy, where he lays out into the sociological landscape of Denmark - and Scandinavia at large - which shaped the foundation of social democracy (not the eastern block).

I mean genererally speaking, it's a common trait in politics that a government that rules during a crisis, usually doesn't survive the crisis itself. Churchill lost power after WW2 despite leading the allies to victory. France and Germany were largely led by the right during the "trente glorieuses" and "Wirtschaftswunder" postwar periods, not social democrats. Similarly, both the neoliberal wave and the reaction in the form of the "third way" only really happened in anglophone countries. The social democrats in Denmark is actually being quite smart about the refugee part. A lot of people in Denmark have been worried about our failing integration policies (over the past 30 years mind you) and the immigration crisis from 2015 gave a large amount of breath to the right-wing parties, because they came with hard and difficult to argue against solutions to the problem. While the left-wing parties were much softer and, at least to some people, didn't even want to acknowledge the issue as a problem. So, while the social democrats lost some of their more left-leaning voters, because of their tougher stance. They lost them to the same left-wing parties, who support them. While also gaining voters from the right-wing, who do lean left, but ultimately wanted a solution to the immigration problem. From my perspective, this is exactly the reason why the left in Denmark is doing so well lately. Because it is the same situation as in 2015, but in reverse and about climate change instead of immigration. Where the right-wing parties are pussy-footing around and basically hoping for technology to solve the problem before deadline. While the left-wing parties have hard and difficult to argue against solutions. However, if Erdogan, Russia or other reasons around the world suddenly starts "breaking into Europe", then that will most certainly give the right-wing a breath of fresh air again. EDIT: By "Breaking into Europe" I was referring to Erdogan, Russia and other factors attracting/pushing refugees towards Europe.

To be honest the elections in Germany last year were more influenced by the personalities of chancellor candidates then a move towards the german Social Democrats (SPD). Armin Laschet who was the candidate of the CDU is kind of a goofy personality and often not well informed about international and national political topics (especially in comparison with Angela Merkel). Even many conservative CDU-voters didn't want to see him as chancellor. People weren't enthusiastic about Olaf Scholz either but he was much more accepted as a serious chancellor candidate and not seen as a complete failure like Armin Laschet. However like you mentioned the political gaps between Conservatives (CDU) and Social Democrats (SPD) did decrease the last 20 to 30 years as well. Gerhard Schröder who was chancellor before Merkel did increase taxes and made some fundamental cuts in social standards as a SPD politician. With him the SPD lost his image as party for the working class and still has to recover from the image not beeing much of a difference to the conservative CDU. According to polls "Die Linke" (The Left) and "Die Grünen" (Greens) are the most popular parties amongst voters younger then 30 years. Unfortunately "Die Linke" or to be more precise many of their politicians (not all) are supportive towards Russia which can't be accepted by many and got obvious the past years. Though they follow the most straight politics for the working class and are in line with the Greens about climate change and green politics. We will see how it turns out the next centuries and if there will be a true renaissance of Social Democrats and more rejection of neo liberalism. I'm afraid that a decrease of living standars and a growing number of very poor people will also cause voters to get much more manipulated by the populism of right wing politicians and parties. Trump and also Brexit are a result of this like the history of my own country of course (Weimarer Republic and the Great Depression). Let's hope for the best and people make decisions more based on facts then feelings in future ✌

After thise three you basicly get a bunch of left-wing parties(PVDD, SP, PVDA, GL) and two right-wing parties (CDA and FvD) and then all the smaller fractured parties with 3 or less seats (DENK, SGP, VOLT, BBB, BIJ1). Italy have similar situation where 5star is basically a mess which boosts centre left party. We need to also remember that strong far right sentiment is present nearly all over Europe I think it is a short term spike which will be followed by rise of centre right parties and I have to admit that I hope so as centre left parties haven’t proposed any substantial programs placing themselves as just another alternative. I hope to see more prominent centre left parties because right now I don’t think they give much reason to vote for them apart from not being centre-right.

The collapse of the conservative center-right also plays a massive role in the rise of the social democrats. In Germany, the rise of the SPD was largely due to senior voters switching from the conservative right-wing CDU to the SPD. In Austria, the SPÖ is leading in some polls but this largely due to the Collapse of the ÖVP in the polls after the corruption scandal involving (Ex-)Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. Yes, the social democrats have picked up some momentum, but if the center-right parties didn't collapse they would be nowhere near power in most countries. This is also demonstrated by the fact that center-left parties are nowhere near their ratings they had a few decades ago, despite being in power. The Italian part of this video is a bit lackluster. In the thumbnail instead of the secretary of the democratic party there is a somewhat tame figure, while somewhat important in Europe he isn't not important in Italy. Also the victories in three mayoral elections were won back from the five star yes, but the five star are a socialist populist party. It was definitely a victory for the more moderate center left, but not for the left as a whole since it damaged the greatest ally of the democratic party in the government. There is also the fact that due to Italy particular political history, the democratic party wasn't considered a overwhelmingly a left party for most of his history. Taking instead a centrist demeanor against the historic Communist party.
@stewij1
@stewij1 2 жыл бұрын
As an italian student of political science i can assure you 5 star ain't socialist, just populist, also you're wrong about the democratic party. It was created in 2007 in the context of a bipolar system with the hope of reuniting all the forces of the center left coalition in ( or almost all of them) into a singular party.The 2 main party's converging into the new force were the former communist party (renamed Democratic Party of the Left after the end of the URSS and the Fall of the Berlin wall ,and under the request of USA president Bill Clinton. and The Margherita ( a party reuniting the liberal catholic of the (nonsocialist) left that origianally were part of Christian Democratic Party( the party usually led the coalition before the birth of the Democratic Party)

@@stefanocagliani5984 they're a Centrist party because of Renzi MP's inside of it, after the next election things are likely going back to the social democracy principals . Tho you forget to say 5 star wanted to get out of the EU , they voted in favor of the security decrets with the "League" that made thousand of previous legal immigrant illegal (increasing social tension immidiatly) they cutted the number of MP in parlament ( cutting pubblic rappresentation in big way in some region of the country ) and they're making opposition alongside the "League" over mandatory vaccination for covid, and always had a good number of no vax inside. They were in a coalition with far right party the "League". They never wanted to be such it was founded mirroring the same name party in the US which id not social democracy, not even close. They are more leftist on civil right issues tho and i agree on the things you said about 5 star i was just pointing out that many historical battle of the left aka italian comunist party were brought forward by them rather than by the democratic party. Unfortunately no real major left party remains in Italy only centrist or right.
@stewij1
@stewij1 2 жыл бұрын
@@stefanocagliani5984 of course i understand the comparison to the Democratic party in the Usa but due to the fragmentation of the Italian political sistem and also of the Italian society a more complex explanation is required . Also i like to remind that The communist party or the later know PDS was one of the 2 main founder of the Italian "PD". I understand your view , especially considering the experience of the current and the last legislation and the way more open middle class approach of the party, but i disagree . The PD is a social democratic party , not by ideology, but by default and by sum between the forces who made it. saying It's a center liberal party would be' extremelly wrong considering the political history of the country with a party like the "DC" being the main rappresentative to a certain extent of what you described

They benefited from 5 star in Italy deciding that it would be neat to do the polar opposite of everything that gained them popularity. Spain doesn't have much of an alternative and the socialists are deeply unpopular there. Tories aren't remotely conservative at this point and Boris Johnson decided to alienate everyone who gave him victories and Merkel in terms of action basically was a social Democrat. Any gain from the left is entirely the result of the right moving towards the left in these countries. That'll work fine until the far right parties like Vox and AfD make pushes to be a viable political force, which is exactly whats happening in Spain and Italy. The key issue for the left is that even if they gain power, they have no idea how to solve these issues. Greens in Germany looked at the energy crisis and decided that electricity is too cheap. The left ideologically has no answers to inflation, or any of the challenges. Frankly, the left hasn't had a real new idea in Europe since Marx. All of the avante garde ideology is coming from the right. Until the left finds a way to answer some basic questions about the world they built, any victory will be temporary.

I see it more as an outlier. Italy - the rise of PD follows the decline of M5S. M5S has basically disappointed its voters so some of them are now voting for PD again. But their rise isn't actually that strong, they are nowhere near 40-50% they used to be and if elections were held today, right-wing parties would almost certainly win. Slovenia - they have consistently elected centre-left governments since like 2004. Centre-right is actually stronger there then they used to be. Austria - I see no change there eather. The only change I see is that some OVP voters switched to FPO (which are both right-leaning parties), but centre-left support is pretty much consistent. Germany - SPD leader was just more appealing than CDU. Also, Germany is shifting to the left for some time now, CDU just kept winning because of Merkel's popularity. UK - Conservatives are in power since 2010. No party can be in power for that long without losing support. It has to happen sooner or later, voters just want change. Also, Labour is more consolidated now. Norway - same as the UK. Also, scandals. Romania - their centre-left is quite socially conservative anyway.

If thats the case, keep in mind that over there a problematic situation that is or will affect most of the western countries is entirely unice. So if we have a look at countries like great britan or germany, yeah, the elderly are the ones with the safest kind of income ( atleast for now, most of these programs for financing will run out at 2025) but still get affected massivly by poverty in the upcoming years. Just in short , i totally get the frustration, but understand that the gap between generations isnt the same in every european country and spain is a very extrem example.
