At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

Valide hurrem sultan never chose sides irl, she loved both selim and beyazid. She wanted to protect beyazid because of his personality, same as here, but she always wanted selim for the throne. Mihrimah sultan on the other hand always wanted beyazid but in the end when selim became sultan, the two made peace , she helped him, he made her valide sultan.

cheap production. using the same few actors for major roles: a beard and a mustache is a young muslim man, shave his head and he's an older character. put on a wig and it's a female character.

I would say that this production had great aspirations at the beginning. With the death of its original writer however, it fell of hard. Its fall should be studied, actually. If you have heard about Game of Thrones, it is the exact same equivalent. Game of Thrones became horrible in later seasons, having started with pretty big promises in its start. This disappointed everyone, and is still talked about. The reason for that was that, because it was based on books and the books ended after some point, when the screenwriters were left on their own they turned the story into a disaster. When the original writer of Magnificent Century was still alive, during the first seasons, the production couldn’t be called cheap really. There was a great diversity of actors and roles, ranging from strong statesmen, beautiful concubines, effeminate men, and all in between. The sets were impeccable, the rooms, the palaces, the marketplace, the special effects for the environment, the music and the beautiful soundtracks, the dresses, hair, accessories. It would be unfair to call it ‘cheap’.
