That was such a great summary of Russian society. Most of my Russian friends have described that, but less eloquently. There is little room for introspection and rationality left in Russia these days...

@@TheMartymar1976 I don''t think support for Ukraine is a right vs left thing. It is a centrist vs an extremist issue. Plenty of folks on the right (especially vets) support Ukraine. Mitch McConnell visited Ukraine early in the war. A group on the far left drafted a letter to ask Biden to stop sending weapons to Ukraine. Trump and Smith-Green aren't the Republican party, especially after Jan 6. The real trend of this midterm election is the more centrist candidates won most close elections instead of a left or right trend.

@@hunterpayne6167 I understand your point, it's well taken. Yes, support for Ukraine should be a bi partisan effort, however some in the Republican party have been questioning aid to Ukraine lately. I heard from somewhere that all the billions spent by the USA up to now (750 billion forgive me if I'm off) comes out to about 6 dollars an American.

Reverse engineering is one thing, but manufacturing in quantity is an order of magnitude more difficult. While the Iranians are intelligent and capable, they currently lack the sophistication to manufacture weapons first fielded in the 80's and 90's. The weaknesses and countermeasures against anti-air and anti-armor systems produced decades ago are well understood by the West.

Recommend Yale professor Timothy Snyder’s recent course on Ukrainian. He says, and has said many time previously, that the only way a colonial or fascist power reforms is when it loses the war, e.g., Germany and Japan, thought there are many other examples. Very Canadian view that reforms can occur because of sweet positive emails and tweets. Maybe if we send them chocolates? But weren’t the refrigerators and kiddie train rides enough?
@hunterpayne6167
@hunterpayne6167 Жыл бұрын
Be careful with that specific course. Snyder's politics aren't ideal for someone covering Ukrainian history and he isn't especially good at seeing his own biases. It is a bit like having a hard right winger cover the holocaust. His coverage of the 1918-1945 period is not especially strong for this reason. There is better historical coverage of this topic from other historians. But his course is accessible and a good start to cover this rather ignored topic in history.

It's interesting how Europe (and even a lot of Americans) equate what Trump wants in regards to Ukraine as equal to what the Republicans want. In particular on this topic, not even close to a majority of Republicans want to stop or decrease aid. Trump may want to, but I seriously doubt he would be able to persuade a majority of Republicans, much less Democrats.
@RobBCactive
@RobBCactive Жыл бұрын
Those Trumptard Republicans manage to gain more headlines. The letter to Biden urging peace negotiations from a progressive caucus gained similar publicity despite it being rescinded. Kevin McCarthy talked about not writing blank cheques so pretending the extremists don't have influence is not going to be believed.

Unfortunately fascism and extreme groups thrive on simple, endlessly repeatable tropes. Populist and dangerously extreme politicians clearly aren't only found in Russia but all over. Educating the public to make informed political decisions. It's long term, expensive and difficult, see Germany. Change is easier to implement after catastrophic defeat and occupation but can it be done, as your guest speaker suggests, remotely?

My guess is that the reason why Putin decided to withdraw from Kherson was the US mid-term election results. He was hoping that Republicans and the MAGA crowd will come to power and arms to Ukraine will be curtained which gives Russia fighting chance to hold on to Kherson. But as the results came in and it became clear that there will be enough support in the new Congress, even if it is a Republican one, might have figured in his calculations to announce withdrawal from Kherson. Look at the timing!
@osric1730
@osric1730 Жыл бұрын
No I think its because I made a cheese sandwich yesterday and the moon is in Ares. I mean look at the timing... The repositioning of Russian forces in Kherson has been going on for weeks and the impact of a Republican landslide wouldn't have been felt for months, long after the situation in Kherson would have become critical.

Very drôle! The artillery knocking the chit out of Kherson pontoon bridges for months had nothing to do with it.
@hunterpayne6167
@hunterpayne6167 Жыл бұрын
I doubt it, it is because the Kerch bridge will take months to fix. The Russians can't supply the right side of the Dnipro well enough so trying to hold it is just a waste of the few quality troops Russia has left. And the Russians have been withdrawing for weeks already. The timing is about the progress of that withdrawal. The reasons for the withdrawal are about military and logistics issues.

In order for Christian Salvation to be "real" the Bible must be taken literally. If it is just a metaphor, with a selection of what to apply offered as a kind of toolbox for creating personal and social cohesion, then the mechanism of "Gace" is contradicted. The New Testament condemns homosexuality, let alone the LGBT/QRS, etc. This opens the problem for Christianity because once it is to be used as a metaphoric toolkit, the doctrine and "story" falls apart pretty quickly. The speaker is likely a Christian Socialist. Northern Europeans are mostly Christian Socialists. They modified Christianity into a handy universal system for political use. Because of its long establishment in his culture, he is blind to the Christian interpretation he holds which is every bit as "blasphemous" as the Russian Orthodox political myth-making. Of course, I believe that this is what has always happened in Christianity from the start. Even Paul in the first century was engaged in argumentation against other opinions of Christianity. This amounts to political infighting. Once the then-so-called Orthodox Christianity gained political power by the end of the fourth century, they declared all other sects of Christianity heretical and immediately began to persecute and purge them' a process that went on until the 18th century. This is why Western Civilization has always been locked in turmoil and won't escape it as long as it exists.

As a Russian I am a little taken aback by the somewhat depressing comments on the state of Russian society. My view is that all this nationalistic patriotic religious obsession is skin deep and will disappear given a chance to live differently. After the USSR collapsed, nobody needed retraining, Russian people were jumping head first into western culture. Our society is naturally secular, genuinely close to western and the people are simply compliant to the oppression. LGBT hatred is artificially boosted, not deeply seated in the society. Please don't be fooled by the propaganda.
@JuliesTales

I used to think about the Russian society in the same way, justifying everything by the influence of propaganda. But I think it's denial. Look at those women whose fathers/brothers/husbands were mobilised, they complain about the conditions that their men ended up in, but not about the war and the fact that they were sent to kill people in Ukraine. The rest say that politics is not of their concern. Horrifying.

I would appreciate more in-depth coverage of the military situation. I feel this podcast isn't so much interested in either the actual fighting or the geopolitical situation surrounding that fighting so much as it's interested in tooting its own horn. I could care less about the opinions of the reporters or guests, especially when those opinions are on irrelevant topics, I want the facts so that I can make up my own judgements and the simple fact is this podcast fails to provide those facts. If I want to listen to someone editorializing about the Ukraine War, I would appreciate that said person have a military or governmental background who is not concerned with constantly people-pleasing the rest of the "contentious objectors" that occupy positions within the media community itself. In other words, I am, as an audience member, not responsible for this podcast producer's decision to create an frictionless echo chamber. In any case,I shouldn't be the one asking the difficult questions.

Dr Ian Garner is fundamentally wrong - Calling Putin Fascist is completely off - why did he ignore Alexander Dugan & the 4th Political Theory?

LOL Dugin is a fascist. He takes his inspiration from pond life like Herman Wirth who was a member of the SS. He may have become self aware enough to distance himself by the time of the 4th political theory, but his Volkisch outlook stands out like dog's balls.

Lets see. Ukraine has only a small percentage of right wing parliament members. It did not cultivate the image of the glorious leader who will bring back greatness. They do not lean on some fabricated origin myth or myth of succession. They do not have a national scapegoat. They were not isolationist but were seeking regional and global cooperation. In fact, all the key attributes of fascism are completely missing from Ukrainian politics and society at large. There are no fascist tenets to be found that are rampant, so no. Ukrainian fascism is a non-issue.

well if there were bombs falling on Kamchatka and St Petersburg electric plants and hospitals, we might care about Russian perspective. For now it's Russia behaving like inhuman fascists

Yea....in the future, Russia can have something similar to the May Day parade, wherein they celebrate the capture of a Ukrainian village with a population of 700. The parade will showcase its military might......T64 tanks, and a trebuchet or two. 🤣🤣
