Tbh I think the current fascination with "ugly" clothes is a direct reaction to years of being told that everything colorful or interesting is tacky. People are fed up with wearing souless beige backrooms garments out of fear, and they're using deliberately "ugly" clothes to break out of that cage and hoon off into the great unknown where they can wear something with character.

What bothers me the most is how fits are messed up in mainstream fashion stores, it's insane. When I used to go to Zara or COS I was sure I could find clothes that were decent quality and that had good fits. Ugly clothes are popular because you can't fail at wearing them, if someone judges that it looks bad then "it's meant to, silly" (they also aren't cool enough to have gotten the memo that it's actually fashionable) and if someone judges that it looks cool then it's a win. It's a way of removing yourself from the competitive arena of beauty too. There is a huge segment of Gen-Z that is engaged in trying to de-beautify themselves... all generations grow up with unattainable beauty standards but for Gen-Z it's in hyperdrive so there's a deliberate pushback against the entire culture of beauty.
