I've been a Vinted user for around 7 years now, I've bought there some very one of a kind pieces from unkown brands, scrolling for hours to find THE piece I was looking for. Now I wish there was a "Brands I don't want to see in my results" filter, because it's full of Zara and Shein... 😭

Ohhh you are so right. I’d love to be able to eliminate certain brands from my search. I also think it should be mandatory to list the fabric type unless it isn’t labelled. I find Vinted a bit of a double edged sword. On the plus side I haven’t bought anything from fast fashion in about 3 years apart from underwear and plain black leggings. All my clothes except shoes I get from Vinted. Ditto my daughters clothes, shoes and toys, everything is from Vinted. It’s amazing in that respect. Plus I read that charity shops don’t have the capacity to store donations given the volume they receive so it’s better for sustainability to keep stuff at home if you have the space and sell on Vinted. When you have a young child, the turnaround of clothes and toys is high as they grow out of them fast, you can’t help it. The downside is that the app makes buying things too tempting so I’ve wasted money on purchases that I didn’t really need because they were cheap. So it encourages over-consumption even if the objects are second hand.
@maril2048
@maril2048 29 күн бұрын
That is absolutely true! If you buy something that you did not really needed, at least it is second hand... I do that sometimes, but to try to reduce overconsumption i leave stuff i like in the cart, go back after a while, then if i still like the object i ask some questions about it so that i can evaluate if i will actually use it or not.

You briefly mentioned this, but I want to emphasize it… some small companies can’t afford to stay open, even though they have great concepts, and a bigger corporate company comes along and buys them out. Not saying that’s what happened with Trendsales, but it happens… a lot. I own a small business, and I see this way too often. It’s either that or it closes for good, often leaving the original business owner deep in debt. This leads me to my main encouragement which is SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES!! They can’t stay open if we don’t support them. If we want local, user friendly businesses, the consumers are the ones who need to help them keep their doors open. Just a friendly reminder to anyone reading this! 😉😊

I mean not quite on topic. I'm not a standard size, my size can fluctuate a bit, I don't wear dresses much. However, I've a wedding to go to in 4 weeks, abroad where it will be hot, which I don't have anything suitable. I found a fab dress in my local charity shop, from Hobbs. I know the charity it supports, people with disabilities. When the wedding is over, I will bring the dress back for someone else to enjoy. I view it as a rental scheme. I get to wear something for an event. If I thought I'd have an occasion to wear it again in the next year I'd keep it, but really I won't. I wear a capsule wardrobe.

The thing with Vinted is that you can use the platform without supporting the company. Just buy directly from the sellers without using the system and Vinted doesn't get a dime from you. What I find more problematic is that I sometimes feel like buying from certain sellers might encourage them overconsuming even more fast fashion because you're indirectly financing it. That's one of the reason I don't buy any Shein items (apart from the quality) on Vinted and I'm sceptical of sellers who have hundreds of items in their closet.

That's mind blowing. In Hungary, you you can't really sell things on Vinted for what they worth, because with delivery fee and the fee Vinted puts on the price, nobody will buy it. For example a if I upload a skirt that worths 5000 Ft, with every fee, it will cost like a 1000 or even more. It's sometimes more expensive than a new in H&M or similar stores. And here people usually buy second hand in general to spare money, not beacuse they're try to be enviromentally conscious. That's just a side effect

I have had very mixed feelings about Vinted lately as well. I've been proud of the platform for being such a succesfull Lithuanian business know internationally (I'm Lithuanian) for a long time, as well as a happy user as buying second hand is basically the only way I can afford clothes. After moving to the Netherlands, I felt like I couldn't find the style and quality clothes like I wanted in second hand shops in the area where I moved to (not a big city). So Vinted, offering accessibility to more countries, was a good option to find what I want for the price I can afford. I've had a feeling thrift stores are being kind of pick out by re-sellers. Or they've become unreasonably high priced (especially for better quality clothes). unfortunatelly, that's also the feeling I've been having with Vinted lately. So many resellers. So many boutique feeling profiles. And more and more hard to find quality that wouldn't be overpriced. I've bought a cashmere sweater for 45€ a few years ago on Vinted and that already felt spendy for me, but now you find cashmere second hand items on Vinted for almost the price of new pieces sometimes. And it's annoying. Also, the amount of times I've been cheated on Vinted by people uploading mislesding photos or information, and the bigger Vinted gets, the less controlled it feels. Kind of like wild wild west.

I think that with every form of consumerism, whether new or second hand, it is important to use it with your brain on. Second hand is great but that doesn't mean it negates all other ethical considerations. Vinted has allowed me to buy things second hand that I would otherwise have had to buy new, because they were very specific. but buying e.g. a shirt from spain that you don't really need, is not sustainable. so for me, the same questions are always: 1) do I really need it? 2) could I acquire it in a more sustainable way? (local, thrifted etc) 3) is this seller worth my money? ( not all sellers on vinted are the same) 4) finally; does my need for this item outweigh the cost, both for me and the environment?

Thank you for this timely video! I'd love one on gentrification of thrifting. I agree that there is an issue with overconsumption if people use thrifting (whether in a shop or on a platform) to excuse their shopping habits. I use vinted and I like it because it has good search functions and it is my go to place whenever I need something specific. I go to second hand shops when I have time to browse. Online platforms are admittedly more convenient. You can buy things quickly online. That's probably one reason it's successful. To stay local I buy larger items (furniture, decoration items) I use the local equivalent of FB marketplace. The money goes directly to someone in my area.

But not anymore, I was ripped off a few times (didn’t get my money) or had to deal with people thinking 2€ is enough for a brand wool sweater. I remember when Vinted started in France, I was living there and we only had french vinties (Vinted sellers) with the possibility to meet in person if you wanted something in your area, wich to me is more sustainable and economic than shipping..😬 I used it a lot when i was living there. Then I came back to Portugal and few years later (like last year) Vinted entered portuguese market and I had hard time finding clothes from my country, and the option to meet the seller in person so you don't need shipping (wich like I said is more sustainable) wasn't there anymore, they suppressed it. Also the fact that they are know in all Europe, clothes can come from very far away in Europe, wich once again, to me is not sustainable espacially for second hand.. And we don't even have the possibility to select an area or a country in the selection. Shipping one product to me is not very ecofriendly.. I tried to find a dress not that long ago, and the result were from diferent countries like : some were in Portugal (where I live) but they were not very highlight in the results, a lot of the first pages options were french and italian sellers, danish etc.. I know it should be the platform looking for solutions, but the way I go around about this is buy not searching by category first, and instead entering the keyword for an item I'm looking for in the language of the area where I live. So, for me, that is Dutch, and if I look for, say, silk skirt, I'd enter "zijden rok" to get the results from the Netherlands first. That does not narrow the area to a specific city/place where you live, but at least it's the same country.

I‘ve found some really nice clothing pieces on Vinted (especially merch) and it only happened one or two times that a product didn‘t arrive or was in bad condition. However, I have to keep in mind that just because it‘s second-hand and cheaper, I don‘t need to buy it and regarding the environment, it‘s better to not buy any clothes at all if possible. And I actually hate selling my own clothes - some people like making rude price suggestions, randomly decide to not answer anymore etc. and the five euros I get are not really worth that for me lol

The thing about Vinted is that you can search by size, colour, material and brand which can narrow down the search for what you want. But there is so much stuff on sale that it's crazy 😮. Some people also think that their crappy stuff is worth a fortune, it's really not. I have gotten a few things from "dumpster"diving 😊, people had left bags of clothes next to a clothes recycling bin and I bought home some items that were in perfect condition 🙂. My daughter has a fleece jacket that she loves and wears all the time.

Here in Sweden too I have been seeing so many Vinted ads. Thanks for doing a deep dive on it! I'd still rather buy from local thrift stores or facebook marketplace instead of having it transported from possibly another country.

I have been buying from Vinted for years. I also have a lot of fair fashion clothing, but it's very expensive and that's why I buy a lot of second-hand clothing from Vinted. I try to find a balance between both. 💚

Sellpy being bought by H&M broke my heart so much
@angelikazankishieva

H&M started to invest in Sellpy since 2015. Sellpy would not survive without those investments so long, they would go in insolvency as Sellpy hasn’t made a penny until now. The latest financial report available is for 2022, and in 2022 the result was MINUS over 13 million Swedish crowns. It means their costs exceed their earnings. I’m waiting for the reports for 2023 to see if anything has changed. Because H&M was investing and investing year after year, in 2022 they practically became the major owners of the company. Just to be clear, I do not promote fast fashion at all, I’m a small vintage shop owner myself with background in accounting. Just wanted to make the picture of why and how this acquisition happened more clear. Sellpy was a great idea, but unfortunately they don’t account how much labor goes in maintaining this business model, and in my opinion that’s why they are loosing money.

Agree that selling for way too much is crazy, And, it is fair to pay people for the time/gas/photos listing shipping etc etc etc that they did FOR YOU in order for you to have access to x item. It’s not gentrification-most of those doing reselling work their butt off for very little profit, and are just trying to get by. Many are women. It’s just not an issue. It doesn’t make sense to focus your criticism on people trying to get by when there’s actual harmful actors that deserve the criticism

I use Vinted only because I find it easy, and I like that I don't pay fees, unlike, for example, Ebay. I found some great bargains on it. The only downside is that you have to seel cheap, even designer stuff, otherwise you don't sell. That can be annoying above all when you didn't buy it secondhand paid lots of money for it.

From the late 70s ive never really bought new, just the basics, chuffed when Vinted came into my life only recently, as Ebay where just uping their fees all the time, as well as more and more information regarding what i regard as personal !!! I am now bombarded with Vinted advertising, fell on your platform by chance, so disappointed that yet again im dealing with another big company with little ethics. Oh wow is the world x keep up the good work, you are much needed x

Yes, please do a video on the gentrification of thrift stores! In the US it has gotten absurd, with the number of people shopping to resell and thrift stores increasing their prices to near retail levels to compensate. The first is just irritating. The second just drives up prices in secondhand markets and, I’m sure, contributes to more clothing going into the dumpsters.

I also think that “brand new with tags” are often sold by shoplifters. Shoplifting is rife in the UK. I saw one seller's photos was the items still on the rack at M&S. Stealing to order perhaps. I’d rather they stuck to the actual 2nd hand market.

I used Vinted now, used to use ebay back in the day. I would prefer to buy all my stuff in person from charity shops, but (I could be wrong here) reselling seems to have ruined charity shopping. All of the higher quality items are snapped up by resellers or sold online by the shop, leaving a lot of low quality, fast-fashion, polyester tat from places like Primark and Shein. Even Zara looks like luxury now. Vinted is great if you're looking for something very specific.

Vinted is my go to platform because I tend to have better luck finding stuff in my size, as a bigger person. With Depop, even if i search by my size items in xs or small show up. Why have the filter if it doesn't work properly?? But tbh i don't purchase that much secondhand stuff online, i kind of use the apps as inspo boards to find what i need in my local thrift stores!

In Canada & US, we have Poshmark. It’s great if you can find used & sometimes new items that you want for a great price. However, some sellers are full time and this is great if they are selling used items but a few will buy from Shein and sell 😔 I am trying to be conscious about what I buy even from these sites. One thing I found out is that Etsy allows people to list things as vintage. If they are older than 20 years and historically 20 to 40 years basically would be retro and 40 to 80 years old. Items would be vintage and anything around like the 100-year mark would be like antique. Once Etsy started allowing people to list things that are from 2004 as vintage, I think a lot of other resale places started doing the same

This was really interesting! I like using vinted. My goal is to buy almost all clothes second hand, using mostly money i made selling clothes. I'm loosing weight, so when things don't fit, i can sell and replace them with less worry of the impact. I buy more clothes, but at least it is circular. It could also encourage people to buy better because quality clothes sell much better on vinted. I never buy shien or h&m, they aren't made to last.

Very helpful and informative, as always. I honestly prefer donating clothes to charities or go to physical thrift stores. I'd really like your take on the recent "explosion" of sustainable clothing brands that flood my social media feeds. They all have amazing "stories" and "eco"-something certificates. But how can you know if they are actually sustainable, if they sell at a global level? As you say, it's always better to just buy less. 😅

I have been debating these issues too, as from lately. Regardless It always comes to ones mindset. Vinted has been a big help since I have reached a face of my life that I no longer identify with the old me, and it reflects my wardrobe. Slowly making the transition of what we no longer use and pretend to buy. Have a plan or inspiration board before impulsively buying even if secondhand, giving preference to the closest locations to you in order to reduce the transportation. Vinted is good to me because it's big enough that people in my home country will actually use it since second hand isn't a cultural normal here. There is good and bad to everything. We just have to be aware and act on the best solution to our situation.

I don’t disagree with going local and small brand but a lot of times they can’t survive, so many small brands go out of business because it doesn’t make financial sense for them anymore. I use some small brands but they discontinue products because of money.

Their customer service as you say is none and all digital responses which is opening a whole opportunity to scammers and people are losing out on monies due to a digital response and not a real person looking into these fraudulent issues buyers seems to be having. The quickness of people being blocked/suspended is ridiculous and not worth an appeal as you say digital responses. Real people are needing to view these complaints

Also in terms of shipping costs to the environment!! If you're always buying from someone in your same (European) country, shipping is quite limited. But if you have to buy from across the continent, like you said it's always higher cost to the consumer for shipping, AND ALSO higher shipping emissions. The US is such a big country, we'd have to have local state by state options to rival your nation-specific options. Seeing y'all lose national options in favor of generic European super-orgs is not good.

I was blocked by Vinted a few months ago. Until this day I am unaware of what I did. There was no phone or email that I could have contacted to ask for advice and I kept receiving automated responses. The only way to proof my innocence would have been to send a photo of my credit card (!) with a handwritten note next to it. And I’m just not willing to send my credit card details into the blue.

I've only been on Vinted for 3 months, and I'm selling things that are brand new with tags, but people just want you to give things away almost for free. It's ridiculous. I understand if it's a used item, you woukd charge less, but I've put a brand new bag from River island on there, with tags, still in all it's original wrapping, and someone offered something stupid like £5. Other people making ridiculous offers for £3. I just don't even respond to those people. The cheek of people.

so cool to find out that vinted was founded by fellow lithuanians. i wonder, are there any fellas who watch gittemary from here too. anyways, i started using vinted quite recently, but i dont find it successful from a selling point, have sold a few items, clothes not really at all. have used depop a couple times because a lot of people don't ship to lithuania or price with shipping is ridiculous. still think both are great platforms, i'd rather people shop secondhand than brand new from these big, greedy brands.

I have been using vinted very specifically for maternity clothes. Will i use it to get baby stuff? Absolutely, because my alternative is buying new. Will it increase my consumption over all? Unlikely because i don't enjoy window shopping. I already know what i need before i start searching, and I will keep looking until i find exactly that. The problem with all marketplaces is the same as shops: overconsumption. We don't need much stuff to live, but without a majority of people overconsuming, the market economy will implode. And i personally wouldn't be mad about that but i suspect I'm in the minority here.

I actually have to disagree with you. Although a lot of your points are fair, i think when it comes to overconsumption, one of the main things is to get the majority to do something. The 'usual users' (already interested in sustainability) will be drawn to second hand anyways. In order to get the overconsumers into second hand shopping, we need familiarity, a large variety and supply. Things vinted can offer smaller platforms cant. Sure vinted is not a perfect company, but I think they play a major role in normalising and making second hand shopping more accessible

Hey, Gittemary, this hast nothing to do with this Video. But i think you should Open Up your own Gourmet-Zero-Waste Restaurant. I don't think that you actually have to cook there all the time, just create the menu and teach your principles to the staff. Have someone who's in charge to reduce waste and the CO2 Footprint, so you can concentrate more in your Videos again after it's set Up properly (6 month or so).
