In the second episode of The Risinger Build, the team delves into Builders FirstSource's cutting-edge Digital Tools. At the Risinger Build HQ, this episode features discussions with Justin from Builders FirstSource, Tim Hill and Chelsea Scharbach who showcases the floor plan of this project in Austin, Texas, highlighting its unique features and challenges.
The conversation transitions to Builder First Source's Digital Tools, emphasizing the transition from 2D plans to 3D models. Justin demonstrates how their team translates traditional plans into a virtual 3D space, enabling builders to visualize and address potential construction issues beforehand. This process includes structurally solving the model, integrating component designs, and generating material lists.
The team discusses the benefits of Builders FirstSource's MyBLDR platform, which streamlines collaboration and enhances project planning and execution. From drafters to tradespeople, the platform facilitates seamless communication and problem-solving, ultimately leading to more efficient and cost-effective builds.

This is not only helping veteran tradesman plan their quotes but enables the huge need of new younger generations to feel confident taking on complex builds without having the 20 years experience of problem solving in the field.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! The things that you can do with these tools will blow your mind! Started with BIM in 2012. The next step is capturing real world data in point cloud and using this to build your base model, and then during construction for documentation. Amazing stuff Matt! Let's make BIM the industry standard! REVIT rocks!

I have been using AutoCAD since 1984 version 2.15. Man that is a long time. It was only 2D software back then, and there was only AutoCAD. I remember when version 10 was out in the mid-90's. 3D was the rage. I was shown AutoCAD drawings that included every stud and even down to every fastener. We thought, this is great, we will be able to easily do conflict resolution and material take-offs. Here we are 30 years later still trying to get there. I think we have a much better chance now given how much technology has progressed. In the end, the tools need to be there, but technology will not save you if you don't have great people. It looks like you all have a great team. Keep up the great work.

This is amazing from the point of view of someone who has Aphantasia (the inability to create mental imagery) to be able to see what the house looks like before I approve the build is a game changer for me. it removes the barrier that I have for being afraid to build a home because I can't visual the end product. thank you for showing this prat of the process.

I’ve done more remodeling and nice size garages and smaller projects and sometimes customers cannot for the life of them. I show them a drawing whether it’s Birdseye or street view they can’t imagine anything. They have zero imagination. This would definitely make life so much easier for so many people, keep up the good work Matt

This would be a GREAT way to get young people into the TRADES! This software is ultimately just like creating video games. Young people need to know what tools are available in the construction world and create some new types of trades. Maybe a trade just for construction technology needs to be created. You have just touched on the pin head of what this industry has to offer now, let alone the near future. So awesome Matt showcasing how REVIT will change the world. Don't forget better design starts with simulation, which is possible now with real world metrics. Create efficient spaces, refine them to the max budget. Never before possible because of the intense nature of the calculations. Bring us more...

@ the 28 minute mark, you are talking of how you can coordinate the trades to install everything around each other and the beams. Does Ready Frame show the locations of these mechanicals in the preprint on the studs and such. Like between studs 212 and 213 have plumb vent written on the studs with arrows pointing between the studs. hvac duct located here, and other types of data, so the new a/c guy knows that he is supposed to go here and there leaving the other space open for electrical and plumbing.

My favorite thought from this episode was from Chelsea. Sometimes you don't want to show too much detail, because the client will get stuck on that. I have run into this quite a few times. Once you show them a picture, they expect it to look like that, no matter what has changed along the way. Also, having super detailed plans is great, but try to get things nailed down as much as possible before detailing the plans. Once all those details are in the plans it can be difficult to change things without redrawing a lot of what has been done. We call this the ripple effect. My general rule is stay in 2D as long as you can. 🙂

As an engineer who has designed parts and assemblies in 3D for 20 years, I'm surprised this is not more common in the home building industry. We're building our 2nd new house, and neither builder has done anything like this. This would be amazing for design center sessions where you could swap in new colors, lights, etc and see the immediate impact to how the space looks.

Is there a cost to use the BFS design tools? I'm have AutoCAD and am very experienced in that so I'd love to use the BFS tools for my projects.

Finally eh! They have been in residential since 2012 when I started using BIM software for MEP called DDS-CAD. I was probably one of the first adopters in the Country and to date I use Revit with TwinMotion and all the awesome Autodesk AEC Collection has to offer.

@buildshow your audio sounds robotic because of the time differential between the different mics / bleed. Creating out of phase / Martian sound. I’m a builder in SC and 20 year audio engineer. If you want some audio help let me know! Fantastic videos / production. Thanks!

Think you missed the ZipR6 exterior sheathing. Then adding an R15 interior insulation and good to go.

Many great Building Designers and Architects use this same or similar software in their design and construction documentation. If they are not, they should be. Why is the Lumber yard /supplier providing a service that the Designer/Architect should be? The Design Professionals are trained to understand and coordinate these items between the client and builder. Is Builder's First Source charging for this service?

I’m sure this going to be a wonderful high performance house on a more conventional budget, but it’s so disappointing that two (maybe three?) architects using advanced 3D design tools couldn’t come up with a more interesting architectural design. The plan layout is nice, but the exterior is a conventional “builder’s special” spec house that looks like pretty much like any suburban house in any American town over the past 60 years. Much nicer job on interior fit and finishes, but why so ultra-conservative and boring on the exterior design? 3D modeling is a wonderful tool for coordinating all the structural, mechanical, electrical, and other aspects of a new build, AND it’s a wonderful tool for elevating the architectural design in the hands of a good architect. Trying to “fit in” to the existing neighborhood is not an excuse for boring design. Nor does good design have to be expensive, especially if you’re working out the details thoughtfully with digital 3D modeling software.

I thought Matt said this was going to be a cheap build last episode? some of the details like Zip R-6 and double Advantech on the floor are WAY more expensive that alternates, eg 7/16 OSB + 3M tape + exterior polyiso or rockwool comfort board and single L360 OSB/Plywood for floor ($32/sheet vs $60 for advantech)

Just a shame that the likes of Autodesk (AutoCad and Revit) and Trimble (SketchUp) have priced hobbyists out of the market. I taught myself and used to make fully rendered building designs for fun, but it's near impossible to justify the expensive of these programs outside of a business setting unless you have disposable income to burn. Trying to keep up the skills I learnt over the years has now become futile!
