Having driven extensively the R and owning a 290. I would say the R is a better car in terms of 0-60 times and high speed corners. But for going on a slip road onto a uk motorway and fuel economy due to the less weight the 290 is better, also the LSD on twisty UK B roads I find the 290 more fun. All depends on what you would like from the car. Running costs with the R are way more as the excess weight from the 4 wheel drive so less efficient mpg, tyre costs as it’s 4 wheel drive mean they all have to be replaced pretty much at the same time. Plus servicing is more expensive when changing all the fluids due to the power to the rear wheels. That being said, my only problem with the 290 is the brakes are no where near as good as everyone says and actually the new cupra R has Brembo brakes as standard and they are a million times better Hope you found this of interest

In my opinion it is great daily drivers car, great economy, relatively cheap to tax.. Just insurance is a bit high. I think I will buy this car in about 1-2 years... Or maybe 1.8 tsi which is good too

Hi Howard, great review as always. Do you think you will get to test the Cupra 300 ST 4Drive? I have been quoted one fully loaded with options for £29k, the equivalent Golf R Estate (7.5) with the same options is £7k more! Surely the Cupra is the smart choice?

If i may, the RRP of the car has only a little to do with the publics buying influence these days as most people use PCP. Like the Golf R which all the media luvvies say is expensive, isn't when you compare it with other hot hatches that may have more poor residual values (Megan, Seat and Octavia to name a few). The residual value is more on the R so the monthlies are less. It may be an idea to include monthly cost of the car in future reviews? You can get into a Porsche cayman s for relatively little these days because of the high GFV. Just a thought, well i just did.

It's a similar cost to a Golf R and probably a bit more on the monthly payments. It doesn't really compete with a Golf R though as this is more of a track car - better brakes and less weight than a Golf R but down on refinement and build materials. If you were to compare it to a VW it should really be a Clubsport GTI or a Clubsport S, and as the Clubsport S is sold out and ordering has finished for Clubsport this is easier to buy. A new Cayman S will still be a lot more expensive than either car.

not really the deposit for a Golf R is £5991.38 for a 3yr PCP 10kpa with a residual of £14751, the Cayman S is a deposit of £12700 with a residual of £30905. The Cayman is £6708.62 more expensive and that's assuming the VW dealer doesn't give an enhanced deposit contribution which all of them will. The Seat is a £5000 deposit for the same payments with a residual of £11193. Payments in all cases will be £341. No matter which way you look at it the hot hatches are all roughly in the same ballpark and the Porsche is massively more expensive.

I wasn't suggesting that the monthly payments for the Cayman s was going to be similar to a 30k car, i was just pointing out that because of the higher GFV of some cars (And dealer discounts of course) that RRP of the car can be somewhat irrelevant as most people take out PCP deals. You can get an AMG A45 premium (RRP42,590) for £338 per month with £6k deposit on a 48 month contract.
