The creature is one of fear, pain, cowardice. It only kills one at a time, it separates the group to weaken it and never faces them when they are together, it itself is afraid. In the end when he roars back it backs up, it knows that it can die and maybe its not as powerful as it makes others believe, it is fear, a representation of trauma, pain, and cowardice, when faced it knows it cannot stand against the strong, those willing to fight.

Assuming the cultists didn’t do anything a wild animal could absolutely drag the bodies off.

I always thought 'the blonde woman' was the daughter from the family picture they found. She implies to Luke that creature picks its members based on pain or trauma. And if you look carefully at that family picture, the daughter looks ill at ease and is standing away from her family like something wasn't right. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I thought that's what they were hinting at.

I really love the crossover between Dom telling Luke off for not fighting back while his friend dies, and Dom just hiding in the tress, while Phil dies. Its like it shows him as both a hypocrite and also a normal person - freezing up and not able to fight back against something that is about to kill your friend. I thought that that's why Dom kinda gets on with Luke in the last part, as he can kinda understand why Luke did what he did, and why Luke couldn't have realistically done anything else.

I always found it interesting that the monster appeared as Dom's wife before he died. Was it to put his mind at ease that way he would be a more willing sacrifice? Was it to lure him into a false sense of security and then shock him with the monsters true form in order to create that fear for it to be necessary to sacrifice him? These are the questions I still have for the movie. I still love the hell out of it. It's one of my favorite horror movies for sure

@@tavirosu25 that makes sense, but does it have to appear as something to lure in a person to be sacrificed (like an angular fish with it's light to lure in prey) or does it need that fear to make the sacrifice? factss there ain't no shortcuts in the fucking woods. I learned my mistakes, i once did this too with a friend of mine. We were going to our destination and the map told us to do a full round circle and avoid the woods. Guess what? we went straight to the woods thinking it was a shortcut and it would've made our journey easier. It was like 3pm we predicted that it would slice our journey up, originally if we took the right path and followed the map it would've been 5-6 hours of hiking. Our compass was pointing the right direction and that's what we thought, it's 7pm already quite starting to get really dark and we weren't even close to reaching the other side. It was freezing cold and we were tired. We gave up and decided to call it a day, we sat there and got our tents set up with the fire. It was dead quiet there and we literally were paranoid af when we started hearing wood branches falling of trees and noises there. I got no sleep there and was scared to the ground lmao, we both packed our stuff and left at 5am when we saw the sun, after an 2 hrs of hiking we finally got out of the woods. Literally one of the scariest experience i've ever done.

I think Moder's reasoning behind choosing each victim was not so much the pain they endured but rather their response to it. For the whole film, Luke had to deal with the subtle truth that he had a role in his friend's death, and the creature saw this "weakness" as a desirable quality in a follower. In fact, that's what it saw in all its followers. Note how the woman who speaks to Luke, after he undoes his restraints, says "we worship it", dodging the question of whether or not she's afraid of it. That's all Moder wanted: submission, and would extend their lives as a "gift". But that's the real question of this movie: is it better to live kneeling or die standing?

When they find the tent that picture is actually important. It's a picture of the girl (and her family) who covered his ears when he was tied to the wall in the house. The girl knew real pain because the family didn't love her like they did her brother. You can safely assume this based on the family hugging tightly and smiling in the photo while she was off to the side and frowning.

I thought the same, but I have more to add on a deeper level. I think it was growing desperate in making him bow, trying to force him to become a slave to his suffering. It thrives on those who worship it, it's worshipers being those who suffer a great deal. His will to fight negated the Jotun's feeling of control, causing it to force his head to the ground. I feel that this story and the Jotun are a greater metaphor for overcoming suffering and perhaps depression and sadness.

That's a good interpretation. Very interesting scene. In my opinion, Moder (the monster) seemed to gain a bit of respect for Luke after seeing his will to fight and conquer his demons. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Moder attempting the ritual to grant Luke immortality? Why would Moder do that after Luke murdered his cult? Seemed like a respect thing to me. I don't think Moder was actually trying to kill him in those last few minutes. Seemed more like he was desperately trying to recruit Luke into his cult.

Plus the guy could of just given up his ring. No possession is worth your life. All sentimental value is lost if your dead. Oddly enough robbers weigh out the risk. They get caught robbing, burglary charge and assault with a deadly weapon-jail time with possibility of parole. Murder is a whole different story, you get detectives looking for you-increasing your chance of getting caught and if you get a homicide charge then you are looking at hard time on top of the other charges I mentioned which also reduces chance of parole. They would have to get hella lucky with a judge to get any sort of deal. Therefore if he would of did as they said, they more than likely would of not killed him just like the cashier.

The monster is Hel, Loki's daughter, who was in charge of the souls of those who did not qualify for Valhalla because they didn't die in battle. That's why the cult is made of non-combatants, like the sickly and the elderly, women and children. Hel herself was described as a woman who looked half-normal and half-corpse, I think this film's take on that is pretty damn cool, the monster is literally made of corpses so you could say there are parts that look normal! Anyway, Luke had a chance to die fighting but chickened out, from then on he belonged to Hel. I guess he got a second chance at the end because he found his courage and fought back, unlike the cultists who allow themselves to be killed without much resistance.

I disagree with the interpretation that the Jotunn loses interest in Luke because he has dealt with his pain - it was established earlier that his pain was what spared him to begin with. I think it is rather that in choking down his fear and confronting the beast, he depletes some of its power over him. The Jotunn is clearly shaken by his defiance. Luke's pain wouldn't suddenly disappear because he stuck an axe in a monster's face, and he had just lost three of his best friends so he would definitely have some fresh pain to deal with. I'm not convinced the Jotunn had the power to keep Luke in the forest any more. I think the film is about overcoming guilt and fighting to break its hold over you.

That's the thing though, Luke was guilty and guilt isn't something that you buy at CVS. It's an energy that corrodes your mind and soul, as whatever it is that you've done takes up residency in that guilt and that guilt latches on to you for life. Now don't get it twisted as a lot of people do fucked up things and feel no guilt, which is common. But you have to remember that his friend looked at him to help him and he did nothing. Plus misery wanted company and his friend accompanied him not because he wanted something in there, but just to accompany him and he literally watched him die. There's just some things that will eat away at you either because the person whoever you've wronged puts that type of energy out there or because that's just how the chips fell. Luke just chose to fight this time, (even though it was for his survival) but nevertheless what he's done in the past ain't going no where. Plus you have to look at it this way. He did nothing and watched his friends die at the hands of those crack heads, then time fast forwarded and he watched 3 more of his friends die at the hands of a big deer and there was nothing he could do about it but save himself! So if you want to look at it from the other end of the spectrum, the deer knew that he would suffer either way, and not having nothing in addition to no more friends is equally or just as worst. So it didn't matter if he got away. Maybe I went to deep, but when you're dealing with intelligence that supersedes the average persons thinking, there will always be levels to an outcome. In Lukes mind he may have felt that he won and got away, but he's crazier times a million after that experience. As how do you tell a random head in the clouds person about that type of experience and who does he have to express himself to, now that he ran away from a town that ancient people lived in.

Not gonna lie, this monster design has to be one of my favorites. I /love/ giant, deformed, freaky looking monsters that look like they came straight out of Satan's asshole. Who wouldn't? The Mist and The Ritual are my current favorites in terms of monster size/design, though I personally feel The Mist is leagues above The Ritual in terms of story telling. I wish there were more movies like these. [If anyone has some suggestions, please tell me. ^^]

“[The creature is called] Moder in the novel. … It’s female. … I wanted to preserve my own experience of reading the book, wherein the creature’s design is somewhat shifting. Or at least you have competing ideas about what it might be. We dug into Norse mythology and discovered a Jötnar clan of giants that were known as shape-shifters and would sometimes present with combined human and animal qualities. It felt close enough to what Adam had imagined but gave us a little room to experiment. … I reached out to Keith Thompson, who I was a huge fan of, and was very fortunate to have him come on board. He experimented with those ideas and provided many different possibilities, as well as concepts for the decrepit parishioners, the effigy in the attic, and the hanging elk. It all tied together and told a visual story. The beast design we finally settled on was simply the one I couldn’t take my eyes off of. I think anyone who’s familiar with his work can tell through and through that this is one of his uncanny creations.” - David Bruckner

I don't think it had to do with him "suffering real pain" in life. It was because he was a coward. It was looking for people it knew it could dominate because it wanted to be worshiped. The others wouldn't suitable, but seeing how cowardly the people that it keeps alive in the village, it's what it is looking for. When they are trying to escape, even the other people in the village are too cowardly to directly attack and subdue them. It needs them to be cowardly so it has control and they will worship it and won't leave the village over some moral crisis. Am I way off?

The Ritual is one of the few recent horror films I've found to be instant classics. The Void was also very Lovecraftian, and was very good as well, regardless if the end scene was dumb or not. True horror films are the ones that succeed at actually scaring you, and for a horror junkie like me, that is rarely ever achieved. The movie has to be visceral, you need to feel it, and jump scares simply don't do that at all. Which is such a terrible trend. Lazy writing. The Ritual was highly successful at introducing and building characters, real storytelling with no stupid narration or paragraphs of explanations, and it managed to trigger emotional responses. And the plot made sense! Every character did things that made sense for who they were, and they reacted to events genuinely, driving the plot that was logical and only irrational when a character made a reasonably irrational decision. We need more quality horror films like this.

Jade Laurel Johnson I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft, but I don't feel like The Void pulled it off very well, it's a decent movie, but far too many movies, The Void included, I think, think they can just go "Ooooohhhhhh, oogly boogly space bullshit." and call it Lovecraftian. (Also, seriously, this movie has little to nothing Lovecraftian about it...still a pretty good movie, though, but I don't know who was smoking what when they said that creature was based on Shub-Niggurath xD ) If you want a really good Lovecraft-esq movie (in my opinion, atleast), try "The Endless"! :)
@jademoon7938
@jademoon7938 6 жыл бұрын
@@lolzomgz1337 Hello, sorry to have taken so long. The thing you gotta remember about Lovecraft is that literally everything he wrote can be imagined in many ways, and other than a few features, the gods are.. Much like the design of The Void. Otherworldly. Amorphous. With tendrils. And body horror. It's super hard to even draw a Lovecraftian creation, so for a super low budget Canadian horror movie to have accomplished what they did was amazing. I'm a sucker for cults and body horror, that I'll admit, but I do genuinely think the story and film are of the Lovecraft lore, and I do think budget constraints force some imagination. I'd prefer a dozen movies like this to a CGI Cthulhu. Plus I feel like the quote, "in strange eons, even death may die" was at least a jumping off point for The Void, as a doctor accesses powers from another dimension to conquer death and revive his daughter to begin another era of human evolution beyond death. Seems pretty on point. I have no idea how the doctor could've ever known if that thing was actually his daughter or not though lol. The ending is what sucked for me. Where the hell did the doctor go? He was just replaced with the dead wife? Shouldn't he be standing with the guy at the end? That bugged me. Otherwise, I think the movie nailed Lovecraftian ideas on a very small budget.

@@FelipeAlmeida-qy5bf Off the top of my head.. The ReAnimator, The Thing, The Mist, Event Horizon.. I think the more liberally you define the genre makes a difference on what you'll include as Lovecraftian. The Cloverfield monster is, but the movies aren't successful at conveying the style of Lovecraft. I'll definitely check out The Witch, I've never heard of it, I'm always looking for quality horror.

At first, I felt for Luke for not intervening in the robbery and coming to Rob's defense, however I then realized that the entire reason why they stepped foot into the store was because of Luke wanting to get furthered drunk and party. Rob just wanted to go home, just like the other friends. It was Luke's entire decision to enter into the store, and Rob being a GOOD friend, accompanied him. Luke should've came to Rob's defense. What he did was very dishonorable and I do agree had he stepped in, Rob would've probably been alive. I wouldn't want to remain friends with someone who wouldn't defend me in a life or death situation. I don't respect Luke for that.

maybe in order for the creature to get him is it has to be able to control his thoughts. In the end he was no longer controlled by what happened in his past, but he struggled to survive in the here and now, so the monster lost his grip on him, trying to force him in submission. That seems a mode of operation, those that the monster cannot haunt, are made to worship it, the others get killed. Like the old hag in the village who also had a mark of the monster, maybe it means she could not be controlled by her past and given the choice to worship.

When they found Hutch hanging, I was surprised by how tangible their horror was.
