Why the Book Wins *book vs movie*

2 жыл бұрын

The Road is a desolate novel by Cormac McCarthy which was adapted into a movie starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit0McPhee. The movie stays very true to the book! Check out today's episode to learn what I thought of each and what minor changes were made.

I've just read it in may, and loved it! I guess it helped that I like the post apocalyptic genre. It is one of my favorite book of this year and it made me cry at the end.

Love Duvall’s cameo also. Side note, filmed in PA, Oregon, Louisiana and Mount St Helen’s

Only just found your channel. Per The Road, just wanted to say that I read the book first, and still recall the powerful thoughts it created in my imagination. Then saw the film on dvd, and, but, was disappointed, indeed. I felt, and still feel that the books impression was let down by that of the filum. The oft used radio quote, of that 'swimming out to the wreck', always brings the words of the book and the images suggested in my mind, then, back to immediate thought.

The Road is my 2nd favorite fiction book, and I still think the movie is better than the book.

I've never been a post-apocalyptic fan, but I'd definitely not want it to be sunless. I need sun!

I was hoping there would be something explaining the thumbless men. That's actually why I looked this up, it's been 12+ years since I watched it and it still bugs me.

Hmm I actually don't remember that.. Maybe their thumbs had been eaten..?

@@WhytheBookWins could be. In the movie the thief and the man at the end had their thumbs cut off. Me andy dad watched this together and when it ended we were both like "What about the thumbs?!"

@Kamilia Johnson I actually just Googled it and it was punishment by the communities or sounds like. "A commune depends on co-operation and presumably in a post-apocalyptic scenario, a necessity to be able to use tools, hunt and forage etc; without thumbs a person is inhibited from performing any of these tasks. If the outcasts had been disowned by the communes, as their name indicates, it’s more than likely to have been because they didn’t obey the rules, consequently the most likely explanation for the missing thumbs is that it was done as punishment, something which Hillcoat says was, “some hint of tribal punishment in the past.”

Just watched it. I give it high marks. 7.5/10 at least. Yeah, the wife wasn’t a fighter but it was post apocalyptic so… Didn’t really get why she would give up. Unlike her husband, whose motivation for living was their son. interesting end also. The couple that did stay together to survive. I presume it was their food in the ground?? Since the dog was there. The acting was superb. Especially the death scene. The son learned important lessons from his father with his questions at the end, retaining possession of the revolver etc. Very believable including the son. Child actors can be annoying. He was not. Idk if another Viggo movie would interest you. Vanishing Point. A remake of the 70’s classic which I prefer. I’ll take heat over cold. But not enthusiastically.

Glad you liked it! I think 7.5 is about what I would give the movie as well. And yeah, incredible acting by everyone! Even the smaller roles like the guy who robs them that I talk about. The scene of him standing there naked was so horrible and sad. A very powerful movie.

@@WhytheBookWins I understood the need to protect his son from any desperate souls. But the man did not harm him and deserved some leniency.
