I'm sure someone must have already said this, but Miklagard is the Viking name for Constantinople, the Eastern Roman Emperor employed Vikings as part of his guard, the Varangians (so we may assume Snake was one of them). Something I love about this show... is that it does not give easy answers, violence is bad.... but what about defending the innocent or even yourself? what about your friends and comrades, what is the value of their life? how to be peaceful in a violent world?
@grey_f9810 ай бұрын
I think you stopped your description too soon, not just the value of the lives of your friends and comrades, but this show also asks you to consider the life of the "enemy." Are Snake's men truly your enemy? Garder doesn't deserve to die, but are the lives of the people he killed less valuable because they aren't our friend? What could Snake have done to protect his comrade's lives? Questions like these make it even more complicated, because otherwise everyone would just choose the lives of their friends at the expense of other people's lives, and that only continues the cycle. What Thorfinn was forced to contemplate was to consider the lives of both Garder as well as the ones Garder killed, and this is why he could not "avenge" Garder by killing Snake. That wouldn't solve anything, but doing nothing by being a pacifist doesn't save anyone's life either (neither Garder nor Snake's men), so the question goes unanswered for now. Thorfinn is yet not a true warrior. (also I really hope they make an OVA for Snake's back story some day)

The piano goes hard this episode... But yeah such a beautiful yet tragic episode. It still gets me teary eyed watching it... I feel bad for Gardar, but ESPECIALLY Arnheid. She was caught up in this storm that she had no agency in. Her entire situation was dictated by the choices of Gardar, Ketil, and the slavers who captured her. All she did was dream of a possible future with her husband again and this is how things turn out. So sad.

Honestly, the ending song hits more painfully after watching this episode than usual. I wonder how a beautifully crafted sequence with sublime surrounding becomes so much heart-wrenching to watch, after realising the context of the sequence? Like Violet Evergarden and Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms, this episode of Vinland Saga perfectly brings out the underlying tragedy through a magnificent sequence, which I think is the greatest aspect of this series as well. After watching this episode, I realized that I was really grateful to be able to watch Vinland Saga. Also, I am really grateful that I felt the same emotion you felt watching this episode for the first time, when I watched this episode.

The line that always hits me the hardest here is "One day I'm sure he'll want to go [viking], but I won't let him." Gardar had a lot in common with all the major men of this series - Thors, Thorfinn, Askeladd, and Einar. Like Einar he had everything taken from him. Like Thors and Thorfinn he may have eventually sworn off violence if he'd had the time to process it all. But he ended up dying and like Askeladd his passing gift was saying "I dont want my son to follow my path" just like Askeladd told his "son" Thorfinn "don't follow me. Go be a true warrior"

As far as Snake killing Gardar goes, I believe he did the right thing (from his side). I know after seeing this whole series be for Thorfinn to grow out of his revenge motivated state, killing in revenge for killing, that it seems to not make sense. But from how I see it, Snake's men were just doing their jobs by tracking down Gardar, an escaped slave who had killed some people nearby and might be on their land. Once they did, one of his men died as a result, and once Gardar was captured he escaped after killing more, for a total of five of Snake's men. At the end of the day, in Snake's eyes he was killing a criminal that had killed a family, and then killed some of his men while they were doing their jobs. As he said, Snake's men might be crude and not great people, but they're all he had for a long time, and had been through a lot together. Basically his family too. So when asking Arnheid and Thorfinn how much a life is worth, neither could justify why their family member was worth more in general than 5 of Snake's. I don't think he was doing it to feel satisfied with revenge like Thorfinn was, but was finishing the job that needed done. Overall just a tragic situation. Also cannot wait to see the Ketil hatred starting in full effect next episode.

@@khaalmalki4039 Try to see the situation from the point view of Snake or any of his men, who are basically the policemen of Ketil's farm. There is a runaway murderer roaming the farm, that is all the information they had. They tried to capture him, and he killed them. At this point Snake and the other men had no choice but to stop him by any means. I don't see how this is a contentious point. "One of these people working under Snake also tried to rape Arnheid and Ketil did nothing to him." Both of them are trash but this is irrelevant to the Gardar situation

His mistake was that he never considered the risk of defeat. He didn't understand the priorities of what he needed to protect. He died filled with regret to the end. In the end, just before he died, he realized that his family was more important than his fame and fortune. But it was all too late. Also, the conversation between Thorfinn and Snake has a very deep meaning. In other words, about the difference in the value of life.

Someone else also said it but this is one of the many beautiful things about Vinlad, it doesn't give you answers... Who is in the wrong here? Snake for wanting to avenge his comrades or Thorfinn for wanting Snake to let him walk like nothing happened?
