Saw this when I was a teen in the 80;s, glad I get to see this version again!!

Same! It was on Showtime, if I remember it right. I watched it so many times. (I did NOT remember the whole punching/undressing thing, though! That's extremely disturbing.)

Same here, it scarred me for life as a kid haha...I was glad to see the actual show live eventually and glad to find it wasn't nearly as sleazy as this production (not knocking it, I think it's effective, just a personal observation 😅🍻)

I got to do this play over 20 years ago and had the time of my life!

I was fortunate to see the original production with Barry Bostwick, but this was thoroughly entertaining in its own right. But I've always loved Kaye Ballard, ever since I heard her in "The Golden Apple" and saw her in "Carnival."

Wow - Kaye Ballard and Marjoe Gortner! I saw this twice, I believe - a touring company in the late 70s with Kevin Kline and Patty Lupone, and on Broadway with Barry Bostwick, if memory serves me correctly.

Never knew Showtime did theater shows.

My friend Alan Kaufman was in the stage band for quite a while (and in this video), which is how I became aware of this show.

I'm so curious - where did you find this video? My husband is one of the musicians, and we haven't seen this in 36 years, and have never been able to track it down before!

Wow! I have had this copy for a while now, kindly shared by someone online. I watched it and did enjoy it.

I was in a production of this show when I was in college, in 1988. I played Clement Musgrove. I don’t remember any of us having a problem with the act one finale, where he punches Rosamund in the face, sings a cute song, and then commences to rape her while she’s unconscious. It is extremely troubling to me now, and I can’t believe this was ever part of the play. I mean, he could just sing the song to her while she’s coming on him.

I love show, but does the 2020 revival remove the domestic violence and the suggestion of rape? It seems an easy rewrite.
@DamienSlattery683 жыл бұрын
Actually it is much the same. It is superior to this version and though the subject is dark I never felt it troublesome. We are dealing with a dark myth after all.
@haledork3 жыл бұрын
@@DamienSlattery68 I know it's dark, but does our hero really need to punch her and knock her out twice? Did you get to see the revival? It's such great mix of music and creative story telling.
@DamienSlattery683 жыл бұрын
@@haledork but he can punch the head off her or she him. It's a myth. It's a story within a story too. There is no advocating of the violence by the author's. If a character does a despicable act it does not mean that the writer agrees with such. Shakespeare is full of such violence and we dare not modify the texts. Yes I have the new version of the show and love it.

@@haledork the new version does not have her punched etc. I hear your points of course. 👌

Yikes! It's gonna be a chore to watch this - not even five minutes into it and the lead (Marjoe Gortner) is making it look like a bad high school production. And why cut the songs? "Riches" and "Mean as a Snake" were cut completely, and both "Goodbye Salome" and "Where, Oh Where is My Baby Darlin'" were butchered. Boo, hiss!

Even as a kid when I saw this on cable I thought it was sleazy, cheap, "missing something" and kind of tatty...still, it introduced me to the piece and when I saw a high-end live production eventually I was pleasantly surprised...the music endures ♥️
@hortondlfn1994 Жыл бұрын
@@scottclauscreations That’s one of the reasons I was so disappointed in this production - the music is SO much better than they presented.

Who thought casting Marjoe Gortner was a good idea. Yuk!
