A mid 90's Michael Bay action movie that I always considered his best. Does it hold up? Here's my review for THE ROCK!

Love the fan theory that Sean Connery in this film is James Bond who got captured in the 60s. It fits in really well to the code name theory of James bond. Also, I’m fairly certain hideo Kojima has said that the look of snake on the box art for metal gear WAS based on Michael Beihn, who played the marine in this and also hicks in aliens and reese in terminator

I finally watched this from start to finish on Netflix a few years back, after having heard a buddy of mine talk about it all the time. This was AFTER the TF movies and Bay becoming a punchline. Genuinely enjoyed it. Even the car chase scene, as gratuitous and Micheal Bay-esque as it was, feels so much more forgivable than his later movies. You get the feeling from this movie that he either stopped giving a shit years ago, or had the right group of peers to reign in his worst instincts and chisel him into the right guy making the right movie at the right time. George Lucas style.

To this day, The Rock remains one of the best and most remarkable action films of the 90 's. Ed Harris performed such a fantastic role where you don't approve of his actions, but you can definitely understand why he feels that this need to be done. I was actually rooting for him from time to time, the first few times i saw this film. Though Sean Connery should sorta feel out of place in a 'murican Bay-splosions Extravaganza, as the movie unfolds you begin to see the awesomeness of his character, plus he has the best humoristic scenes in here. Nicolas Cage was in his golden prime when he did these types of movies, as this expert who has to keep his shit together to get the job done. Easier said than done at this point. What else is there to say than that this was Bay at his best, besides Bad Boys. Everytime this movie rolls by, i still take the time to watch it. Such an absolute over-the-top yet fantastic thrill-ride!

My niece was so addicted to this movie that she watched it at least 11 times. I think I’ve seen it with her about six times. I really didn’t have a choice. Have you ever watched a movie so many times that certain dramatic scenes start making you giggle? That’s what happened to us. We absolutely lost it at “well, alrighty then!” BTW: We both still love this movie.

I was 13 in 1998, when Santa Claus celebrated my lord and savior Nicolas Cage by leaving The Rock, Face/Off and Con Air VHS tapes under the Christmas Tree. This was two years after mom and dad divorced. These movies were my father figures. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories, Jeremy. (...well, not the divorce) Oh, and thanks Mom / Santa. Edit: Also, just realized that maybe being exposed as a teenager to these movies (especially The Rock) may have had a real impact on my impressionable teenage brain. Similar to Jeremy, I also got into the Beatles and vinyl LP's. Also thought those jets that nearly bombed Alcatraz were the coolest... now I'm an engineer who works on the newest version of those F/A-18's. Thanks, The Rock. Stay in school, kids. And go to prom. P.S. Couldn't stop gawking like an idiot when touring Alcatraz a few years ago. They really should create an alternative version of the audio tour that just talks about this movie while you're there.

I loved this movie back in the day, you can color me surprised when I was old enough to appreciate that this was directed by Michael Bay. My respect for the movie grew even more...not my respect for Bay, but more for the actors who were able to keep this being such a balanced and fantastic movie. Lesser actors with the dialog and chemistry may of came off as plane, hokey or just not good but the ones in this movie are fantastic. I even love the fantastically over the top characters like the black military guy and his knife, such a hilarious scene.
