This 90 minute docudrama from 1967 by late Axel Eggebrecht and Inge Stolten depicts the rise and fall of the SA (Sturmabteilung; brownshirts) and their dream of what they called the 'second revolution'.
Wikipedia writes: The Night of the Long Knives (German: Nacht der langen Messeri), or the Röhm purge (German: Der Röhm-Putsch), also called Operation Hummingbird (German: Unternehmen Kolibri), was a purge that took place in Nazi Germany from 30 June to 2 July 1934.
It is a detailed account on what took place resulting in the disappearance of the populist movement.

Grandios!

In January 1934, Eicke was promoted to Brigadefuhrer (a 'General' rank) yet in July 1934 he arrives at Rohm's prison as 'Oberfuhrer Eicke,' (='Colonel Eicke'). At one time in his S.S. career Eicke was thrown out of the S.S. and put in a mental hospital but he was eventually released and reinstated in the S.S. at a higher rank.

In the end Rohm didnt stand a chance. The combination of the Army, Goering and Himmler would have guaranteed that he would lose any power struggle. Plus, Hitler would have needed to tone down the S.A because of public revulsion over its naked display of brute force.

@grubernitsch
@grubernitsch 5 ай бұрын
I was under the impression that Reinhard Heydrich started out as a lieutenant of Himmler tied to the the police department in Munich. There is no mention of him in the German speaking reception of this film here, I'm interested myself so let's see if there is anybody who can shed some light on his role. This is a translation of a passage on Heydrich from the German wikipedia page (DeepL): On June 1, 1931, after a long period of indifference, Heydrich joined the NSDAP (membership number 544.916) under the influence of Lina von Osten and her family, and one month later, on July 14, he joined the Schutzstaffel as an SS-Untersturmführer (SS no. 10.120). His early entry into the Party and the SS was probably less motivated by ideology than by a desire to "return to a structured life in uniform. In the early 1930s, Heinrich Himmler systematically expanded the SS.

Fascinating in many ways, but it does show the hate in both Roehm and Hitler, both were Fascists, but only one could succeed, that is now History, but what if Roehm had led Germany, it would have been a disaster like Hitler, but it may well be that there would have been NO War, for myself, it only muddies the water slightly, Germany may well have had a Real Revolution, to the Left and not the Right, that opened up another can of worms. I am a Democratic Socialist, I could never be anything like a Right wing Conservative or a loutish murderous Fascist, being a Celt (Welsh), I followed my Fathers views he served through the War from 39 to 45 Four of those Years he was in the Balkans, a Officer in the Commando's but he was an SOE agent, he saw Fascism close up there. He also saw Communism through Russian Red Army Officers he worked with in Partisan Groups, also the Partisans of Tito with the Russians. He witnessed terrible atrocities on the Civilian Population of Yugoslavija, he also killed many Germans Italians and the Croat Fascist Ustashe, many times close up, personal and Deadly, Knife and Strangulation, the weapon of Secrecy. He became a Pacifist after the War, he had seen enough of the Types of Roehm and Hitler and their despicable attitudes to Race Hatred and Murder, so to Stalin, another Despot, but he did keep Friends with Two Red army officers with whom he had worked ,a third saved his life in Bosnia throwing himself throwing his body on a German grenade in a Foxhole, he lost his life saving my Fathers, my father lost part of his foot. Is this Film from West Germany or the DDR it certainly is acted very well, it also is factually very correct, the Vanity of Roehm and Hitler was incredible. Why on Earth could the Germans not see through this madness.

It's kind of weird how many modern day German speaking conservative groups have prominent ghey men, some even worship the recently deceased ones like saints. It's seen as acceptable for married men with children to have young male lovers among the conservative right-wing men in that subculture. I don't see a similar phenomenon over here in the US... although one can see the conservative ghey minority among the tech conservatives like Peter Thiel ghey billionaire tech mogul who despises women (and who is also close friends with Sebastian Kurz), then there's the Rubin guy on social media with his husband and designer children purchased via surrogate.

In this particular time, the Weimar Republic, the Nazis were not conservatives. They were more likely national revolutionaries, ethnic activists, racists. In a certain sense, the insult at the time is true: “Brown-painted Bolsheviks.” The classic conservatives of this time were more like monarchists who were also more likely to support Hindenburg, maybe von Schleicher.

As already mentioned, the Nazis were NOT like classic conservatives. Their ideology was a weird mix of nationalism, socialism and a hefty dose of antisemitism. The old Prussian aristocracy, of which most high ranking army officers were part of and the rich industrialists were what you would call "conservatives" or monarchists. Hitler managed to get them on his side by promising to restore the old Empire, "Reich" is short for "Kaiser Reich" ( Empire) but many of them were not fully convinced. Specially, the old Prussian military elites who were all aristocrats, had a hard time taking orders from people like Hitler, who wasn´t even a "proper Prussian" but a Bavarian corporal of questionable lineage. Hitler´s family was originally from Austria & his grandmother was allegedly of Bohemian ( Czech) ancestry. Rommel for example, who was a Prussian aristocrat, looked down on Hitler and many other high ranking Nazi Party members, because of this. Also, remember "Operation Valkyrie", the assassination attempt on Hitler? Pretty much all the members of the conspiracy were Prussian aristocrats. Not to mention Roehm was openly homosexual and favored socialist ideas like seizing and re-distributing the wealth of the aristocrats & bourgeoisie. You couldn´t get the conservatives/monarchists on your site, with a guy like this, in a position of power.
