Let It Bleed (50th Anniversary Edition) is out now:
abkco.lnk.to/L...
"Monkey Man" by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
I'm a fleabit peanut monkey
And all my friends are junkies
That's not really true
I'm a cold Italian pizza
I could use a lemon squeezer
What you do?
But I've been bit and I've been tossed around
By every she-rat in this town
Have you babe?
But I am just a monkey man
I'm glad you are a monkey woman too
I was bitten by a boar
I was gouged and I was gored
But I pulled on through
Yeah, I'm a sack of broken eggs
I always have an unmade bed
Don't you?
Well I hope we're not too messianic
Or a trifle too satanic
But we love to play the blues
But well I am just a monkey man
I'm glad you are a monkey woman too
Monkey woman too babe
I'm a monkey
I'm a monkey, babe
I'm a monkey, babe
I'm a monkey
I'm a monkey
I'm a monkey
I'm a monkey
I'm a monkey
Monkey, monkey
Monkey
Monkey
I'm a monkey

This entire song is legendary! That opening line when Mick claims that all his friends are junkies gets me every time! I was in that category for a time in my life, so I know what he meant. I lost too of my mates for that reason. I'm glad at 66 I've been clean and sober for over 40 years.

Screaming along with that line like a monkey because it's the truth and I lived it too. The magnitude of how royal a band this is that they nailed the emotion note by note with all the nuances, bells and whistles. Fkn Aces!

Yes, Charlie's drumming holds the whole track together. I grew up with the Stones, Beatles, Who etc and and still enjoy music from this era immensely. I consider myself to be very fortunate.

The Beatles and Who were lame compared to this band. Even without Mick Taylor they still amaze me with the entire Stones magical Aurora of just the best showmanship the greatest junkies in Rock history that seems immortal. Keith and Ronnie aren't great musicians they are good. Very good. They bring out Clapton and Buddy Guy when their concerts need that Mick Taylor magic. The Who were great but never did it for me..the Beatles ..aside from the White Album were so popcorn lame ... Can't stand hearing them. Although a few songs were iconic. Hey Jude Let it be Something ...but most early stuff SUCKED!!!!! THEN LED ZEPPELIN SHOWED UP AND ENDED EVERYONES PARTY

I am with you on being able to go through my teenager years with this era of music. I miss those days. I feel bad that the younger generation missed those days. Compared to today’s issue that kids deal and grow up with was not even a thought of during our time. I believe we just enjoyed life back then. Total different atmosphere back then.

@@peterbartolomeo5542 I prefer The Beatles... one of bands that paved the path to progressive rock. Not trying to dismiss Charlie Watts & Bill Wyman, but it's pretty obvious Keith Moon and John Entwistle's playing style are different: lead like, which provide more "ooompph" on my ears. Watts is no doubt a solid timekeeper but he just stayed happily on background. Even old school jazz drummers using smallish drum kit like Gene Krupa sounded more dynamic than him. Wyman is a solid bassist, but it's John Entwistle who pionereed "bass guitar".

To me, this is one of the most sublime bridges in all rock, and a standout in an album of great tunes. I always preferred the looked-over Stones songs rather than their radio hits, and this one is a perfect example. Still solid after all these years.

An incredible track. Charlie’s funkiest drumming, Keef’s nastiest licks. Jagger never sounded more like a serpent, menacing and charming; lyrics both articulate and nasty. An arrangement that goes from haunting to raunchy to anthemic and back to raunch-n-roll at its finest. Sublime.

When I heard earlier today of Charlie's untimely passing, I have to play this song in memory of him. He had done masterful work during his long tenure with the group, but undoubtedly this classic track was his finest accomplishment for all time. He may not rank with the likes of Keith Moon and the legendary John Bonham (may they RIP) yet Watts had proven righteously as a skillful and gifted percussionist throughout the fabulous decade of the 60s into the 80s' Rock and Roll. Thanks for all your musical contributions with the Rolling Stones, Charlie. As an avid fan of vintage rock, you will be dearly missed.

Here here Miss lsabel, you are so right with your comment. Never got to see The Stoling Rones. But with the passing of Brian Jones, then the addition of Mick Taylor, it's the favo-rite era of their music catalog in my opinion. As you can see, l'm not much into acronyms, l reckon it's because l'm an ol" fart. Appreciate your tipping of the hat to "Moonie" & "Bonzo",we can't take away from Mr. Charlie though. He really held it down for The Stones throughout all those years. I really dug the '60s & '70s, never a time better to be alive and experience truly great music and easy living. Sorry to be long-winded, take care and GOD bless. Farewell from Southeast Texas.

Years ago, after i got out of the Marines, me,my girlfriend Laura, and another girl Theresa all dropped acid. Suddenly, middle of the night, tripping balls, Theresa said she had to go home. Curfew. I didnt know she wasnt 18, nor did i know of the curfew. So we all smoked a joint, jumped in my Volkswagon Jetta, and started a 45 minute roadtrip across Chicago. Once on the tollway, the street lights made it seem like we were in a bright tunnel. My girlfriend said, i have no idea how you can drive right now? That made me nervous, so i turned on some tunes, and Monkey Man came on. This intro sounded so cool, and i was relaxed, driving down this trippy tunnel, and it was awesome! Now, whenever i hear this,it brings back some fun memories!

I have always marvelled at the production quality of Let It Bleed. I listen to the depth and clarity of the sound, the quality of the mix, the gorgeous way the drums were recorded and mixed, and then I remember that this was all done with sixties era technology. Lots of deserved accolades for Keith's riffing, but I have long thought that Charlie is a star here as well. Beautiful drumming on beautifully tuned and mixed Gretsch drums. Midnight Rambler, You Got the Silver, Monkey Man, just magnificent musicianship and production. But the sound of those drums grabs me every time. A masterpiece of an album. Great work by Jimmy Miller. Thanks for posting.

i was late to the Stones, when you consider that timeline. 1970 I was born. Maybe because I've always had a thing for drummers. RIP Keith Moon! I always, always knew Charlie was the real class act in this band. Even as a young, naked buck of a child I knew. God I loved the Stones..all these years.. and I've always known it was Charlie. I'll miss him dearly, but I thank him dearly. I can't possibly describe how their music saved me in my youth.... Long Live ROCK and Long Live Charlie Watts you jazz king of rock!
